Eating a diet high in prcessed fd increases the risk f depressin, research suggests. What's mre, peple wh ate plenty f vegetables, fruit and fish actually had a lwer risk f depressin, a team frm University Cllege Lndn fund.
Data n diet amng 3,500 middle-aged civil servants were cmpared with their emtinal state five years later, a British jurnal reprted. They divided the participants int tw grups based n tw types f diet—thse wh ate a diet largely based n whlefd(全天然食物), which includes lts f fruit, vegetables and fish, and thse wh ate a mainly prcessed fd diet, such as sweetened desserts, fried fd, prcessed meat, refined grains and high-fat dairy prducts. After accunting fr factrs such as gender, age, educatin, physical activity, smking habits and chrnic diseases, they fund a significant difference in the future depressin risk with the different diets.
Thse wh ate the mst whlefd had a 26% lwer risk f future depressin than thse wh ate the least whlefd. By cntrast, peple with a diet high in prcessed fd had a 58% higher risk f depressin than thse wh ate a diet lw in prcessed fd.
Study authr Dr. Archana Singh-Manux pinted ut there was a chance that the finding culd be explained by a lifestyle factr they had nt accunted fr.
"There was a paper shwing a Mediterranean diet was assciated with a lwer risk f depressin, but the prblem with that is that if yu live in Britain, the likelihd(可能性) f yu eating a Mediterranean diet is nt very high."
Dr. Andrew McCullch, chief executive f the Mental Health Fundatin, said, "This study adds t an existing bdy f slid research that shws the strng links between what we eat and ur mental health."
He added peple's diets were becming increasingly unhealthy. The UK ppulatin is cnsuming less nutritius, fresh prduce and mre saturated(饱和的) fats and sugars.
