In December 2004, I had just becme a prfessinal phtgrapher and was wrking n a prject abut cmmunities wh live n the sea, knwn as sea nmads (海上游牧民族). I was living with members f the Cha-Ley tribe (部落) n a small island in suthern Thailand. We didn’t share a language and relied n bdy language t cmmunicate.
I went ut t sea with them regularly. One mrning, I was due t set ut with a grup f six-Cha-Ley fishermen in a small bat. The sea lked different, with the water ttally still.
Abut 20 minutes after we left and a few miles ut in the pen sea, ne f the fishermen pinted t a small white spt far in the distance. It was getting bigger and bigger very quickly. This was a tsunami (海啸) wave speeding thrugh the cean.
Usually, the deeper the water, the weaker the wave. But we weren’t ut far enugh t be safe. nr clse enugh t shre t make it back in time. We were stuck. I began t feel really scared.
The captain tld the six f us where t sit, s we wuld balance ut the bat. My camera was in my backpack. I wanted t capture the scene, but I culdn’t. Any mvement wuld imbalance the bat. Suddenly there was a huge nise. The wave hit the bat, but in a flash the skilled captain managed t swerve (使突然转向) us up and nt the wave. Then the bat mved frm the tip f the wave dwn int safe waters. Our eyes and muths were wide pen, and everyne let ut heavy sighs. The captain had saved us all.
Surviving gave me a deep understanding f hw imprtant life can be. I’ve been ging back t Sutheast Asia almst every year since. The phtgraphy prject has becme a thank-yu t the peple wh saved my life. The picture I wanted t take n the bat remains “the ne that gt away” — I think every phtgrapher has ne. But mine changed my life.

D yu knw the names f the peple wh live next dr? Chances are yu live next t smene, but d yu actually knw them? Sadly, the nly time we d seem t hear abut peple’s neighbrs is when things g wrng — hearing peple say things like they have the bad neighbrs! S, what des g wrng?
When talking abut famus feuds (宿仇) with peple wh live clse, yu nly need t think f the Mntagues and Capulets in Shakespeare’s Rme and Juliet. Thankfully, mst real-life quarrels dn’t g that far. These days, especially in cities, many peple live in buildings. Our neighbrs are all arund us — s what prblems can cme frm that?
The first bvius cause f argument is nise pllutin. Lud nise thrugh the walls cnstructin (施工), r peple arguing next dr can disturb the silence f yur living space. Asking smene directly t turn the music dwn can cause yu t feel anxius. Hwever, if yu get smene like a building manager t speak t yur neighbrs, It can make things mre awkward because yu didn’t speak t yur neighbrs directly.
And then what abut smells? If yur neighbrs like eating fd with pungent (刺激的) smells, and the smells flw thrugh yur windw, what can yu d? There are sme ther cmmn prblems, such as water running thrugh the wall, pets making nise, and Jittering frm the windw abve yu. These can bring anger ver time.
It’s nt easy living next dr t smene, especially if they’re nisy. But having a clear and hnest cnversatin might help. Als, try thinking what yu are ding culd make yur neighbrs angry. If it’s smething that wuld make yu feel bad, maybe think again.
28. Why des the authr mentin Shakespeare’s Rme and Juliet in paragraph 2?
A. T present a fact.B. T prvide an example.
C. T explain a tpic.D. T make a cmparisn.
29. What are yu advised t d if a neighbr makes t much nise?
A. Turn t the plice.B. Talk t the neighbr directly.
C. Quarrel with the neighbr.D Ask the building manager fr help.
30. What can we infer abut a neighbr’s pungent fd smells?
A. They prvide yu pleasure.B. They pen yur imaginatin.
C. They’re yur neighbr’s favrites.D They make yu uncmfrtable.
31. What is the last paragraph mainly abut?
A Hw t make a neighbr happy.B. Hw t deal with a nisy neighbr.
C. Hw t cmmunicate with a neighbr.D. Hw t get alng well with a neighbr.
D
Hw wuld yu g withut yur smartphne? Fr many f us, ur smartphne is the first and last thing we lk at every day. We depend n it t perfrm a number f tasks and cnnect with ur friends and family. But have we becme addicted t ur phnes?
Certainly, the inventr f the first mbile phne, American engineer Martin Cper thinks we might be. In a BBC interview, he suggested peple quit scrlling (刷屏) and “get a life”. But f curse, nce we start scrlling r watching vides, we just can’t kick the habit. Psychlgist Jean Twenge says we feel regret fr “checking ur phne again and again if we’re waiting fr a text r getting really int scial media then kind f, lking up and realizing that an hur has passed.”
But des it matter if we make the mst f this technlgy? Pssibly, because like medicine, the prblem appears when it is withdrawn. A study frm King’s Cllege Lndn fund yung peple culdn’t cntrl the amunt f time they spend n their phne. Such behavir means that peple becme “anxius” r “upset” if they are nt allwed t be n the phne cntinuusly, which can cause anxiety and mental health prblems.
Interestingly, anther study by the Lndn Schl f Ecnmics Science suggests we dn’t just lk at ur phnes when we receive text r email messages. The peple they studied felt an autmatical (自动的) need t check their phne, just as a smker wuld light a cigarette.
One slutin culd be an app that rewards (奖励) students fr time spent away frm their phnes. Anther chice is changing yur smartphne t a dumbphne that has nne f the things that turn yur attentin away. But mainly, perhaps, we just need t lk up mre and recnnect with the real wrld!
32. What is Martin Cper’s attitude t fcusing n smartphnes?
A. Uncaring.B. Dubtful.C. Unclear.D. Unacceptable.
