A few people, however, take part in dangerous activities even though they are more than 100 years old﹣ They keep going and going! There is a great grandmother who likes challenging herself although she is 101 years old this year.
Mary Hardison believes that people should always be cheerful and more importantly, take on all kinds of adventures while they physically still can. So, instead of celebrating her 101st birthday with a boring party, she decided to go paragliding(滑翔跳伞)﹣ an idea she got from her 75﹣year﹣old son who recently took it up as a hobby.
So on her birthday, cheered on by her big family, she tied herself up together with expert instructor Kevin Hintze, and jumped down fearlessly from the sky near her home in Ogden, Utah. And, it was not just a simple jump either. According to Kevin Hintze, the grandmother encouraged him to turn around, as they made their way down.

Have you been exercising and eating healthy, but when you step on the scale, it says you’ve gained a few pounds? “That’s normal, and it doesn’t mean that your workouts are not effective”, says Jeffrey A. Dolgan, an exercise physiologist in Miami Beach, Florida.
“A person’s scale mass (质量) is a combination of muscle, fat, bone, blood, and even the air that we carry in our lungs,” he says. “Immediately after a workout routine, the percentage of mass in each body part can shift as much as 15 percent. So if you’re gaining weight while working out and eating healthy, it’s probably not the type of weight gain that you think it is.
The scale can’t tell you how much of your body weight is muscle or fat, which means if your goal is to improve your fitness level, the scale is not the best tool for measuring improvements. When you start to change your body composition with your workouts — by building more muscle mass and decreasing your body fat — your scale weight may increase, while your body fat percentage may decrease. These changes happen over weeks and months (not hours or days) so the scale is useless when tracking them.
You may argue that you weigh a few pounds less after a high intensity (强度) training class. Don’t get too excited—it’s just water loss due to sweat. Water makes up approximately 65 to 90 percent of a person’s weight, and variation in water content of the human body can move the scale by ten pounds or more from day to day.
So ignore the scale and pay more attention to objective measurement tools like body composition. Keep in mind that if you’re exercising but gaining weight, you may actually look slimmer.
28. What can we know from Dolgan’s words from paragraph 2?
A. Your weight changes little during a day.
B. Your scale mass is affected by many factors.
C. Your workout is not effective if you gain weight.
D. Your weight is determined only by muscle and fat.
29. What will most probably happen after you exercise and eat healthy for 3 months?
A. You will weigh more.
B. Your muscle mass will decrease.
C. Your body fat will increase.
D. Your body composition will change.
30. How much water may a man weighing 150 pounds have in his body?
A. 30 pounds. B. 60 pounds.
C. 100 pounds. D. 140 pounds.
31. Which of the following could be the best title for the text?
A. Why Do We Gain Weight?
B. How to Work Out Effectively?
C. What Is the Composition of Our Body?
D. Why Does My Workout Cause Weight Gain?
D
For people suffering from depression, there’s an all-natural treatment they should use—getting more exercise. It could help fight depression, even if people have a genetic risk, new research shows.
For the study, researchers collected information from nearly 8,000 people and found those with related genes were more likely to have depression over the next two years after examining them. But that was less likely for people who were more active at the study’s start, even if they had a family history of depression. Higher levels of physical activity helped protect even those with the highest genetic risk of depression.
Both high-intensity (高强度) exercise and low-intensity activities were associated with a reduced risk of depression. Adding four hours of exercise a week could lower the risk of a new episode (一段经历) of depression by 17%, according to the study. “Our findings strongly suggest that, when it comes to depression, being physically active has the potential to remove the added risk of future episodes in individuals who are genetically risky,” said lead author Karmel Choi. “On average, about 35 additional minutes of physical activity each day may help people to reduce their risk and protect against future depression episodes.”
Depression is a common mental illness globally, with more than 264 million people affected. “Depression is so ubiquitous, and that underlines the need for effective approaches that can impact as many people as possible,” Choi said. And mental health and primary care providers can use the findings to advise patients that there’s something meaningful they can do to lower their risk of depression.
32. How did the researchers reach their conclusion?
A. By analyzing a mass of data.
B. By conducting genetic research.
C. By comparing various levels of activity.
D. By tracking the subjects for many years.
33. What does the study show about depression?
A. Physical activity betters medical treatment.
B. Exercise is able to decrease and prevent it.
C. Different levels of exercise intensity matter the same.
D. Exercising 35 minutes daily is the most effective treatment.
34. What does the underlined word “ubiquitous” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Harmful. B. Complex.
C. Unusual. D. Common.
35. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To discuss a disease.
B. To introduce a method.
C. To analyze a genetic risk.
D. To explain a phenomenon.

Four Ways to Be a Great Roommate
Having a roommate can be one of the best experiences in college or, easily, one of the worst.___36___Follow these tips to avoid the common mistakes that turn good roommate relationships sour.
◇Talk things out. Communication is key. If something happens, sit down with your roommate and have a face-to-face conversation. I've seen roommate relationships fall apart because something happens and, instead of talking to each other, the two start complaining about their roommates behind their backs.___37___
◇Don't expect to be best friends. Some roommates become the best of friends, and some don't. Don't put pressure on yourself or your roommate, especially when you first meet.___38___And if your roommate doesn't end up being your best friend, don't worry.
◇Ask before you take. This applies to food, clothes and anything else. If you want to keep a relationship going, show your roommate that you have respect for what is his or hers by asking first.___39___
◇Clean up after yourself. This should do without saying. Don't be lazy. Or, at least, don't bury your roommate in your clothes and garbage. Most people I've come across in college are messy.___40___But being considerate with where you put your stuff will help you avoid conflict.
A. So you need to think twice before you help your roommates out.
B. This creates nothing but awkward situations and unhappiness.
C. Even if you both agree to share everything, you should still ask.
D. You don't have all the time to clean your room and keep it organized.
E. It all starts with you to have a good relationship with your roommate.
F. Sometime you get stuck with someone who has tons of negative energy.
G. Remember, you're trying to make a new friend, not to scare your roommate away.

B 29. D 30. C 31. D
根据第二段第一句““A person’s scale mass (质量) is a combination of muscle, fat, bone, blood, and even the air that we carry in our lungs,” he says.(他说:“一个人的体表质量是肌肉、脂肪、骨头、血液,甚至是我们肺中携带的空气的组合。”)”
根据第三段的“When you start to change your body composition with your workouts — by building more muscle mass and decreasing your body fat — your scale weight may increase, while your body fat percentage may decrease.(当你开始通过锻炼来改变你的身体组成——通过增加更多的肌肉量和减少体脂——你的体重可能会增加,而体脂率可能会降低。)”
根据倒数第二段“Water makes up approximately 65 to 90 percent of a person’s weight(水大约占一个人体重的65%到90%)”可知,人体的含水量约占人体体重的65%到90%。
通读全文,尤其是第一段“Have you been exercising and eating healthy, but when you step on the scale, it says you’ve gained a few pounds? “That’s normal, and it doesn’t mean that your workouts are not effective”, says Jeffrey A. Dolgan, an exercise physiologist in Miami Beach, Florida.(你是否一直在锻炼,饮食也很健康,但当你站在秤上时,秤上显示你胖了几磅?“这很正常,这并不意味着你的锻炼没有效果,”佛罗里达州迈阿密海滩的运动生理学家Jeffrey A. Dolgan说。)”和第二段的“Immediately after a workout routine, the percentage of mass in each body part can shift as much as 15 percent. So if you’re gaining weight while working out and eating healthy, it’s probably not the type of weight gain that you think it is.(在例行锻炼后,身体各个部位的质量百分比会立即发生15%的变化。所以,如果你在锻炼和健康饮食的同时体重增加,这可能不是你想的那种类型的体重增加。)”可知,文章主要分析了坚持锻炼并进行健康饮食后体重不降反增的原因。D项“Why Does My Workout Cause Weight Gain?(为什么我锻炼后体重反而增加了?)”

根据第二段中的“For the study, researchers collected information from nearly 8,000 people and found those with related genes were more likely to have depression over the next two years after examining them.”(在这项研究中,研究人员收集了近8000人的信息,在对他们进行检查后发现,那些拥有相关基因的人在未来两年更有可能患上抑郁症。) 故选A项。
根据第三段内容,尤其是“On average, about 35 additional minutes of physical activity each day may help people to reduce their risk and protect against future depression episodes.””(“平均来说,每天多做35分钟的体育锻炼可以帮助人们降低患抑郁症的风险,防止未来抑郁发作。”)
根据文章大意以及第一段的“For people suffering from depression, there’s an all-natural treatment they should use—getting more exercise.”(对于患有抑郁症的人来说,他们应该采用一种纯天然的治疗方法——多锻炼)可知,全文主要讲的是锻炼有助于减少和预防抑郁症的发生。

Dear Sir/Madam,
Yours,
LiHua
Dear Sir/Madam,
Knowing that with National Day’s approaching, the Food Club is in desperate need of an
advisor for the Food taste, I am writing to apply for the position.
I am qualified for the job because I have a good knowledge of both Chinese and foreign food culture, which enables me to have a special ability to make a comment on cuisines. In addition, being energetic and patient, I can deal with all sorts of challenging problems without difficulty. Most importantly, having worked as an advisor for some social events, I have rich experience in offering some useful suggestions.
I would be grateful if you could consider my application and accept me. Looking forward to your earliest reply.
Yours,
Lihua
