Race walking shares many fitness benefits with running, research shows, while most likely contributing to fewer injuries. It does, however, have its own problem.
Race walkers are conditioned athletes. The longest track and field event at the Summer Olympics is the 50-kilometer race walk, which is about five miles longer than the marathon. But the sport’s rules require that a race walker’s knees stay straight through most of the leg swing and one foot remain in contact (接触) with the ground at all times. It’s this strange form that makes race walking such an attractive activity, however, says Jaclyn Norberg, an assistant professor of exercise science at Salem State University in Salem, Mass.
Like running, race walking is physically demanding, she says, According to most calculations, race walkers moving at a pace of six miles per hour would burn about 800 calories(卡路里) per hour, which is approximately twice as many as they would burn walking, although fewer than running, which would probably burn about 1,000 or more calories per hour.
However, race walking does not pound the body as much as running does, Dr. Norberg says. According to her research, runners hit the ground with as much as four times their body weight per step, while race walkers, who do not leave the ground, create only about 1.4 times their body weight with each step.
As a result, she says, some of the injuries associated with running, such as runner’s knee, are uncommon among race walkers. But the sport’s strange form does place considerable stress on the ankles and hips, so people with a history of such injuries might want to be cautious in adopting the sport. In fact, anyone wishing to try race walking should probably first consult a coach or experienced racer to learn proper technique, she says. It takes some practice.
    4. Why are race walkers conditioned athletes?
    A. They must run long distances.
    B. They are qualified for the marathon.
    C. They have to follow special rules.
    D. They are good at swinging their legs.
    5. What advantage does race walking have over running?
    A. It’s more popular at the Olympics.
    B. It’s less challenging physically.
    C. It’s more effective in body building.
    D. It’s less likely to cause knee injuries.
    6. What is Dr. Norberg’s suggestion for someone trying race walking?
    A. Getting experts’ opinions.
    B. Having a medical checkup.
    C. Hiring an experienced coach.
    D. Doing regular exercises.
    7. Which word best describes the author’s attitude to race walking?
    A. Skeptical. B. Objective.
    C. Tolerant. D. Conservative.
C 5. D 6. A 7. B
根据第二段“But the sport’s rules require that a race walker’s knees stay straight through most of the leg swing and one foot remain in contact with the ground at all times.”
根据最后一段“As a result, she says, some of the injuries associated with running, such as runner’s knee, are uncommon among race walkers.”
Norberg说的话“In fact, anyone wishing to try race walking should probably first consult a coach or experienced racer to learn proper technique(事实上,任何想尝试竞走的人都应该首先咨询教练或有经验的竞走运动员,学习适当的技巧。)” 故选A项。
根据第一段“Race walking shares many fitness benefits with running, research shows, while most likely contributing to fewer injuries. It does, however, have its own problem.”

Some of the world’s most famous musicians recently gathered in Paris and New Orleans to celebrate the first annual International Jazz Day. UNESCO( United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) recently set April 30 as a day to raise awareness of jazz music, its significance, and its potential as a unifying(联合) voice across cultures.
Despite the celebrations, though, in the U.S. the jazz audience continues to shrink and grow older, and the music has failed to connect with younger generations.
It’s Jason Moran’s job to help change that. As the Kennedy Center’s artistic adviser for jazz, Moran hopes to widen the audience for jazz, make the music more accessible, and preserve its history and culture.
“Jazz seems like it’s not really a part of the American appetite,” Moran tells National Public Radio’s reporter Neal Conan. “What I’m hoping to accomplish is that my generation and younger start to reconsider and understand that jazz is not black and write anymore. It’s actually color, and it’s actually digital.”
Moran says one of the problems with jazz today is that the entertainment aspect of the music has been lost. “The music can’t be presented today the way it was in 1908 or 1958. It has to continue to move, because the way the world works is not the same,” says Moran.
Last year, Moran worked on a project that arranged Fats Waller’s music for a dance party, “Just to kind of put it back in the mind that Waller is dance music as much as it is concert music,” says Moran. “For me, it’s the recontextualization. In music, where does the emotion(情感) lie? Are we, as humans, gaining any insight(感悟) on how to talk about ourselves and how something as abstract as a Charlie Parker record gets us into a dialogue about our emotions and our thoughts? Sometimes we lose sight that the music has a wider context,” says Moran, “so I want to continue those dialogues. Those are the things I want to foster.”
    8. Why did UNESCO set April 30 as International Jazz Day?
    A. To remember the birth of jazz.
    B. To protect cultural diversity.
    C. To encourage people to study music.
    D. To recognize the value of jazz.
    9. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 3 refer to?
    A. Jazz becoming more accessible.
    B. The production of jazz growing faster.
    C. Jazz being less popular with the young.
    D. The jazz audience becoming larger.
    10. What can we infer about Moran’s opinion on jazz?
    A. It will disappear gradually.
    B. It remains black and white.
    C. It should keep up with the times.
    D. It changes every 50 years.
    11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
    A. Exploring the Future of Jazz.
    B. The Rise and Fall of Jazz.
    C. The Story of a Jazz Musician.
    D. Celebrating the Jazz Day.
D 9. C 10. C 11. A
UNESCO(United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) recently set April 30 as a day to raise awareness of jazz music, its significance, and its potential as a unifying(联合) voice across cultures.
Despite the celebrations, though, in the U.S. the jazz audience continues to shrink and grow older, and the music has failed to connect with younger generations可知,尽管UNESCO为爵士乐设了纪念日,但美国的爵士乐听众依然在减少,并且年龄在老化,爵士乐没能将年轻一代人连接起来。再结合It’s Jason Moran’s job to help change that(是Jason Moran的工作是帮助改变那一情况)可推测,that指代的是前文中爵士乐在年轻一代人中失去吸引力的现象。
The music can’t be presented today the way it was in 1908 or 1958. It has to continue to move, because the way the world works is not the same可知,Moran认为现在爵士乐不能 以1908或1958年的方式来呈现,因为世界已经不同了,所以爵士乐必须不断进步,说明随着时代的 发展,爵士乐也要跟上时代才不会被年轻一代所抛弃。
    C
When you were trying to figure out what to buy for the environmentalist on your holiday list, fur probably didn’t cross your mind. But some ecologists and fashion enthusiasts are trying to bring back the market for fur made from nutria (海狸鼠).
Unusual fashion shows in New Orleans and Brooklyn have showcased nutria fur made into clothes in different styles. “It sounds crazy to talk about guilt-free fur—unless you understand that the nutria are destroying vast wetlands every year”, says Cree McCree, project director of Righteous Fur.
Scientists in Louisiana were so concerned that they decided to pay hunters $5 a tail. Some of the fur ends up in the fashion shows like the one in Brooklyn last month.
Nutria were brought there from Argentina by fur farmers and let go into the wild. “The ecosystem down there can’t handle this non-native species. It’s destroying the environment. It’s them or us.” says Michael Massimi, an expert in this field.
The fur trade kept nutria check for decades, but when the market for nutria collapsed in the late 1980s, the cat-sized animals multiplied like crazy.
Biologist Edmond Mouton runs the nutria control program for Louisiana. He says it’s not easy to convince people that nutria fur is green, but he has no doubt about it. Hunters bring in more than 300,000 nutria tails a year, so part of Mouton’s job these days is trying to promote fur.
Then there’s Righteous Fur and its unusual fashion. Morgan says, “To give people a guilt-free option that they can wear without someone throwing paint on them — I think that’s going to be a massive thing, at least here in New York.” Designer Jennifer Anderson admits it took her a while to come around to the opinion that using nutria fur for her creations is morally acceptable. She is trying to come up with a label to attach to nutria fashions to show it is eco-friendly.
    12. What is the purpose of the fashion shows in New Orleans and Brooklyn?
    A. To promote guilt-free fur. B. To expand the fashion market.
    C. To introduce a new brand. D. To celebrate a winter holiday.
    13. Why are scientists concerned about nutria?
    A. Nutria damage the ecosystem seriously. B. Nutria are an endangered species.
    C. Nutria hurt local cat-sized animals. D. Nutria are illegally hunted.
    14. What can we infer about wearing fur in New York according to Morgan?
    A. It’s formal. B. It’s risky. C. It’s harmful. D. It’s traditional.
    15. Which idiom do you think can best describe the fashion made from nutria?
    A. Put the cart before the horse. B. New wine in old bottles.
    C. Kill two birds with one stone. D. Something is better than nothing.
A 13. A 14. B 15. C

根据第四段““The ecosystem down there can’t handle this non-native species. It’s destroying the environment. It’s them or us.” says Michael Massimi, an expert in this field.(“那里的生态系统无法处理这种非本地物种。它正在破坏环境。不是它们活就是我们活。”该领域的专家Michael Massimi说)”可知,科学家们担心海狸鼠是因为海狸鼠严重破坏生态系统。故选A。
根据最后一段“To give people a guilt-free option that they can wear without someone throwing paint on them — I think that’s going to be a massive thing, at least here in New York.(给人们一个没有负罪感的选择,他们可以穿在身上而不会有人往他们身上泼油漆——我认为这将是一件大事,至少在纽约是这样)”可知,在纽约穿皮草是冒险的,因为会有人往他们身上泼油漆。
根据第二段““It sounds crazy to talk about guilt-free fur — unless you understand that the nutria are destroying vast wetlands every year”, says Cree McCree, project director of Righteous Fur. (“谈论无罪恶感的皮毛听起来很疯狂——除非你明白每年都有大量的湿地被海狸鼠破坏,”正义皮毛组织的项目主管克里·麦克雷说)”结合海狸鼠破坏生态,被制成皮草也能满足人们的时尚需求,可推知,海狸鼠制成的时尚是“一举两得”。故选C。

Popularization has in some cases changed the original meaning of emotional intelligence. Many people now misunderstand emotional intelligence as almost everything desirable in a person’s makeup that cannot be measured by an IQ test, such as character, motivation, confidence, mental stability, optimism and “people skills.” Research has shown that emotional skills may contribute to some of these qualities, but most of them move far beyond skill-based emotional intelligence.
We prefer to describe emotional intelligence as a specific set of skills that can be used for either good or bad purposes. The ability to accurately understand how others are feeling may be used by a doctor to find how best to help her patients, while a cheater might use it to control potential victims. Being emotionally intelligent does not necessarily make one a moral person.
Although popular beliefs regarding emotional intelligence run far ahead of what research can reasonably support the overall effects of the publicity have been more beneficial than harmful. The most positive aspect of this popularization is a new and much needed emphasis (重视) on emotion by employers, educators and others interested in promoting social well-being. The popularization of emotional intelligence has helped both the public and researchers re-evaluate the functionality of emotions and how they serve people adaptively in everyday life.
Although the continuing popular appeal of emotional intelligence is desirable, we hope that such attention will excite a greater interest in the scientific and scholarly study of emotion. It is our hope that in coming decades, advances in science will offer new perspectives (视角) from which to study how people manage their lives. Emotional intelligence, with its focus on both head and heart, may serve to point us in the right direction.
    16. What is a common misunderstanding of emotional intelligence?
    A. It can be measured by an IQ test.
    B. It helps to exercise a person’s mind.
    C. It includes a set of emotional skills.
    D. It refers to a person’s positive qualities.
    17. Why does the author mention “doctor” and “cheater” in paragraph 2?
    A. To explain a rule.
    B. To clarify a concept.
    C. To present a fact.
    D. To make a prediction.
    18. What is the author’s attitude to the popularization of emotional intelligence?
    A. Favorable.
    B. Intolerant.
    C. Doubtful.
    D. Unclear.
    19. Which statement do you think the author would probably agree with?
    A. Emotional intelligence is emphasized by all the people.
    B. People who are highly emotionally intelligent are honourable persons.
    C. The research we do at present cannot reasonably support popular beliefs of emotional intelligence.
    D. Emotional intelligence contribute a lot to the qualities like character, motivation, confidence and so on.
    20. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about concerning emotional intelligence?
    A. Its appeal to the public.
    B. Expectations for future studies.
    C. Its practical application.
    D. Scientists with new perspectives.
D 17. B 18. A 19. C 20. B

As long as you’re committed and ambitious, it can be done.(如果你有学习这门艺术的灵感,但附近没有学校,你负担不起课程,或者你的时间表根本不允许,你可以自己学习。 B“It won’t be easy, but it’ll be worth it.(这并不容易,但值得)”与上文内容一致,都是指的需要付出决心要有雄心。故选B。
根据空前内容“Clean out an area of your home and get a punching bag. Since you’ll be doing a lot of jumping, kicking and punching, choose an area of your home to be for your practice sessions.(清理家里的一块地方,准备一个沙袋。因为你要做很多跳跃、踢腿和打拳的动作,选择一个你家里的地方作为你的练习场地)”可知,本段主要讲述的是,如果你要自学功夫,你对场地和设备的准备。选项D“You’ll be doing your moves just in the air at first.(一开始你的动作只是在空中)”讲述的是最初的动作是在空中练习,看上去似乎与场地、设备不相关,但是联系空后内容“But when you want to have resistance, that is where a punching bag comes in handy.(但是当你想要抵抗的时候,沙袋就派上用场了)”就解释了准备沙袋的必要性。故选D。
根据空前内容“Try your best to find instruction. Buy some DVDs, watch some videos online, or look through the websites of Kung Fu schools.(尽你最大的努力去寻找指导。买一些DVD,在网上看一些视频,或者浏览功夫学校的网站)”可知,本段主要建议想要自学中国功夫的人可以尽可能寻找一些指导,如买DVD,看视频或者浏览一些功夫学校的网站。选项G“Many will offer you a taste of their programs, teaching you some basics at the same time.(许多学校会让你体验一下他们的课程,同时教你一些基础知识)”是上文内容的延续,指出这些学校能提供的服务。
根据下文“Master a few stances (马步), and work on your punch, blocks and kicks. Practice combinations in the air and on your bag. Once you get really confident, try to find a friend to practice with.(掌握一些姿势,练习出拳、阻挡和踢腿。在空中和沙岛上练习组合动作。一旦你变得非常自信,试着找一个朋友一起练习)”可知,本段主要讲述的是练习中国功夫的一些招式。选项E“Begin from basic training of your balance and moves. (从基本的平衡和动作训练开始)”讲述的正是从基本的动作招式开始,与下文内容保持一致。故选E。
    【25题详解】
根据空前“At first, the moves may seem silly(起初,这些举动可能看起来很愚蠢)”以及空后“But if you practice every day, meditate, and read literature to understand the philosophy, it can become a way of life you can’t believe you ever lived without.(但是如果你每天练习,冥想,阅读文学作品来理解哲学,它会成为一种你无法相信你曾经没有过的生活方式)”可判断,作者是鼓励读者如果一开始看不到进步,不要轻易放弃,反而要坚持练习。选项C“You may seem like you’re not getting anywhere.(你可能看起来一事无成)”符合上下文内容,承上启下。故选C。
