Manfred Steiner had a successful and prductive career as a dctr, helping generatins f medical students learn abut hematlgy(血液学). But all alng, he had a strng feeling that he shuld be ding smething else: studying physics. At age 89, he has finally realized that dream, earning his PhD in physics frm Brwn University.
“I am really n tp f the wrld. It’ s my third dctral degree, but this is the ne I really cherish a lt. made it—and made it at this age,” said Steiner in an interview with NPR. “I always had this dream: Smeday I’ d like t becme a physicist.”
Steiner grew up in Vienna. When he was just a teenager, he was fascinated with physics. Hwever, persuaded by his parents, he decided t pursue a medical career instead. But during his studies in Vienna, physics still tugged at him. “When I was a medical student, I used t g t the institute f physics, which was very clse t the medical schl,” he said, “and listen t sme lectures abut physics there.”
When Steiner mved permanently t the US frm Vienna, he fcused n medicine and hematlgy, training at Tufts University and MIT. He then became a prfessr at Brwn and led the hematlgy sectin in the university’ s medical schl.
It was nly after Steiner retired frm his career in medicine in 2000 that he was finally able t scratch the physics itch(痒). He started taking classes at MIT. “I had t d a lt f physics classes at MIT befre being allwed t start graduate studies,” he said.
Steiner wrked slwly—he’ s a grandfather wh likes t spend time with his family, and health prblems have been a cncern—but the credits kept piling up. And befre lng, Steiner was eyeing yet anther PhD.
“Yu knw, it tk a lng time,” he said. “There were very serius health prblems in between. But frtunately, I’ m here nw and I’ ve vercme these prblems.”

She sat n a bench in frnt f the headquarters, pleading fr the wrld’s leaders t take climate change seriusly.
Her actin received natinal attentin, with millins f ther students arund the wrld jining in the mvement. “It’s cmpletely unacceptable t nt learn anything abut ur planet and ur envirnment in schl, after all the yung peple wuld ‘inherit’ the Earth.” Villasenr said, “That’s why I think that climate educatin is s imprtant, and that’s why I cncentrate n it nw.”
