As an only child, Nicole Renae often felt lonely in her youth. But that all changed when she turned ten. For her birthday, Renae’s grandmother surprised her with an adorable gray puppy named Chloe.
From the very start, the two were inseparable. “She was my best friend,” Renae says. But when Renae was 14, her father got a new job that came with devastating news: He’d be working at home, and the house needed to be free of audible noise.
With no easier option, the family sent Chloe to a humane society. Though they were optimistic that the dog would find a new home with people who loved her, they couldn’t know for sure.
In time, Renae grew up, got married, and had a child of her own. Remembering the joy that having a dog had brought her as a kid, Renae wanted her daughter to experience the same. She had it in her mind that she would adopt a puppy, but then one day she saw a post on Facebook about a senior dog that needed a new home. The dog in the photograph looked a lot like Chloe — she was even named Chloe. In an instant it was decided: She would adopt this older dog.
When she met Chloe, Renae was struck with a strange feeling. The dog seemed so familiar. And Chloe appeared to feel the same way about Renae. Chloe reminded Renae so much of her old dog that the emotion overwhelmed her.
“I was crying,” Renae says. “I just knew in my heart that it was her.”
Still, eight years had passed since Renae had seen Chloe last, so the notion (突然的想法) seemed to be little more than wishful thinking.
But her mom realized there was a way to test the theory: Their Chloe had been microchipped as a puppy. They found the ID number, then Renae took her new Chloe to the vet to be scanned. Sure enough, she also had a microchip.
“The numbers were a match,” Renae says. “I felt like I’d won the lottery (彩票).”
24.Why did the family get rid of Chloe when Renae was young?
A.To escape from noises. B.To rehouse the senior dog.
C.To guarantee Renae’s safety. D.To help build the humane society.
25.Why did Renae want to adopt a puppy?
A.To give her daughter pleasure of keeping a pet. B.To strike up a friendship with a pet.
C.To search for her old dog Chloe. D.To remind herself of her Chloe.
26.How did the family confirm Renae’s notion?
A.With a careful health check. B.By matching microchips.
C.By putting the dog to the test. D.By letting their feelings be their guide.
27.What does the author want to do by telling the story?
A.Think highly of lasting friendship.
B.Appeal to people to care for animals.
C.Share a story with a thrilling ending.
D.Show many wrong decisions are hastily taken.

As we all know, insects can be remarkably agile (灵活的) in flight. This is really hard to build into flying robots, but MIT Assistant Professor Kevin Yufeng Chen has developed an insect-sized drone (无人机) that approaches insects’ agility.
Typically, drones require wide open spaces. “If we look at most drones today, they’re usually quite big,” says Chen. “Most of their applications involve flying outdoors. The question is: Can you create an insect-sized drone that can move around in very crowded and complex spaces?”
According to Chen, he overcame many problems when building the drone. The insect-sized drone requires a fundamentally different construction from a larger one. The large drone is usually powered by a motor, but the motor loses efficiency as you shrink it. So, Chen says, “For an insect-sized drone, you need to look for alternatives.” The principal alternative until now has been employing a small, rigid actuator (执行器) built from new materials. Chen designed a more agile tiny drone using soft actuators instead of hard ones.
Each actuator can beat nearly 500 times per second and weighs just 0.6 gram, approximately the mass of a large bee. It gives the drone insect-like agility. “You can hit it when it’s flying, and it can recover,” says Chen. “It can also turn over in the air.” The drone looks a bit like a tiny cassette tape with wings, though Chen is also working on a new one shaped like a dragonfly.
Chen says his drone can be useful in industry and agriculture. It can perform machinery inspections to ensure safety and function. Its potential applications include completing search-and-rescue missions following a disaster. “All those things can be very difficult for existing large-scale drones,” Chen explains.
28.What can we know about the actuator designed by Chen?
A.It weighs about six grams.
B.It drives the insect-sized drone.
C.It loses efficiency too much.
D.It employs conventional materials.
29.Which word can best describe Chen’s work?
A.Easy. B.Costly. C.Fruitless. D.Challenging.
30.What does the last paragraph mainly tell us about the new drone?
A.Its safety standards. B.Its flying range.
C.Its possible applications. D.Its design principle.
31.Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A.An Insect-like Small Drone
B.The Future of Insect-sized Drones
C.How Drones Will Change the Agriculture
D.What Challenge Drone Development Faces

Anyone can be late a handful of times, but to be the person who is always late - that’s an art, a frustrating art. Or, a side effect of your personality traits, scientists have found.
So what is it that causes some people to constantly miss trains, make it to the wedding just after the bride’s shown up and regularly annoy their friends? And why is it so hard for us to fix it? “There are all sorts of punishments for being late, and the paradox is that we are late even when those punishments and consequences exist.” said Justin Kruger, a social psychologist at New York University.
One of the commonest reasons why people are frequently late is that they fail to accurately judge how long a task will take - something known as the planning fallacy(谬误). Research has shown that people on average underestimate the time to complete a task by a significant 40 percent.
Another trait is that forever -late-comers are more likely to be multitaskers. In a 2003 study run by Jeff Conte from San Diego State University found that out of 181 subway operators in New York City, those who preferred multitasking were more often late for their job. This is because multitasking makes it harder to have the awareness of what you’re doing. Conte also discovered there is a personality type that’s more likely to be late. While highly strung(紧张不安), achievement-oriented Type A individuals are more possible to be punctual. Type B individuals, however, who are more laid-back(漫不经心), have a higher chance to be late.
Admittedly, knowing all of this doesn’t necessarily help fix the problem. But scientists are starting to work on strategies that can slowly improve our punctuality. For people who constantly underestimate tasks, breaking down an activity into detailed steps can help people estimate how long something will take more accurately. As for your personality type, unfortunately, there isn’t much you can do to change that. But accepting that you need to struggle for it may just help. Acceptance, after all, is the first step to change.
32.What does the underlined word “paradox” mean in paragraph 2?
A.Strategy. B.Argument. C.Solution. D.Puzzle.
33.What is a possible feature of forever-late-comers?
A.They plan to spend more time on a task.
B.They tackle more than one task at a time.
C.They suffer from concentration difficulties.
D.They have high expectations for achievements.
34.Which advice can be given to people who are always late?
A.Learn to accept who you are. B.Change your personality type.
C.Divide a task into smaller ones. D.Keep to the timetable accurately.
35.What is the main idea of the text?
A.Time management contributes to success.
B.Late comers should be severely punished.
C.One’s always being late is linked to personality.
D.Changing personality helps improve punctuality.
Anger is the most destructive emotion. When you are in a temper, you make hasty ill-considered decisions that you will probably regret. You will also regret reckless language spoken without thought. 36 Here are some ways that you can combat the causes of anger.
37 You have to accept that sometimes things do go wrong and that people are not always lovely. Try to accept that other people do behave in ways that will make you both frustrated and angry. Often, there might be an excellent reason why a person acted in away that you found unacceptable.
Realizing that no one is perfect is a good start to avoiding getting angry. 38 Neither will they behave in the same way that you would in a given situation.
Reacting angrily is a hard habit to break. The trick is to avoid reacting when faced with a situation that usually angers. Anger is a negative reaction, but in this type of situation, there is no value in reacting by forming positive thoughts. 39 This way, your anger will not get the emotional food it needs to survive.
Don’t take the easy way when you get angry. We all get tempted to throw something, hit something, or scream when we are angry. You might say you feel better after an angry outburst, but that is just the after-effect of the adrenalin (肾上腺素) your body released while you were angry. A reaction like that is the easy way. It is much harder to stay calm, to walk away from conflict, or to take a deep breath and act normally. 40
A.Stop trying to manage your anger.
B.What can be done to control anger?
C.You need to learn not to respond at all.
D.That, however, is what you must do if you are to stop anger.
E.You need to change your attitude to the way the world works.
F.Taking positive steps will help you overcome feelings of anger.
G.Also, you need to accept that not everyone has the same standards as you.

One day Officer Jackson and Steve were discussing a serious case when they were informed of a disturbance (骚乱) in the nearby subway. So, they walked out of the station and got into their car.
The two officers had expected they’d have to deal with an annoying beggar troubling the passers-by for money. But when they arrived at the crime scene, they were shocked at the beggar’s appearance. The man had tears in his eyes and was sitting on the subway stairs, looking untidy and tired.
“Excuse me, sir,” Officer Jackson said. “You can’t stay here, nor can you bother the people to give you money. You have to leave this place.”
“Look, officers,” the man sighed. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to cause any trouble, okay? I lost my cane (拐杖), and I can’t walk without it. I wanted a few cents so I could get myself something to eat.”
The two officers exchanged looks, knowing the man wasn’t a disturbance but someone who really needed their help. So they promised to get him food, buy him a cane, and drop him home.
After doing that, the officers drove to the beggar’s home, only to discover he had no home at all. He was just wandering in the streets and living off the leftovers he managed to find.
The poor man said his name was Eugene. When he was working at a skyscraper construction site, he was injured and became disabled, losing his ability to walk. Unfortunately, his disability forbade him from doing physical labor, and he wasn’t well-educated to find a desk job, so he remained jobless. Because he couldn’t provide for his family, his wife and children left him. “I don’t have any hopes of changing my destiny (命运), officers,” the man said.
But Officer Jackson wanted Eugene to change his life. “You’re still young,” he said.
“You can’t lose hope so soon. He brought him something warm to eat, helped him take a shower, and gave him his warm boots. After his work, Officer Jackson drove Eugene to a shelter for the homeless and left.

1.C
W: Congratulations, Leon! You’re chosen as a host in our school’s broadcasting station. Will you be paid each month?
M: No, but I can get two credits this term. In fact, I want to gain some practical experience from it.
2.B
M: Hey, Maggie. Eggs are still in the frying pan. They’re going to be burnt.
W: Oops, I totally forgot that. Can you turn off the gas? I’m busy with these dirty clothes.
3.C
W: I’m thinking of getting a special pet, not a dog or a cat. They’re so common.
M: How about a turtle? It’s quiet and easy to keep.
W:OK, I’ll feed one.
4.B
M: That phone ringing all the time is driving me mad! There must be something wrong.
W: Let me check it. Believe me. Okay, it’s fixed. Here you are.
M: Bravo! You’re such an expert!
5.B
W: It’s the first time I’ve visited our next door. Honey, you know what? I’m shocked by the old furniture in Sophie’s room. She tells me her grandpa gave it to her.
M: Really? It could be worth a fortune. We should also leave something to our future grandchildren.
6.A 7.B
M: If this blouse doesn’t fit my wife, may I return it?
W: Certainly. You’ll receive a full refund within 7 days if it’s not damaged by human error. And you must show your receipt.
M: Oh, I see. But what if I just want to get it exchanged?
W: You may change it for the goods at the same or a lower price within 14 days.
M: Okay, I’ll take it. Can I pay it by credit card?
W: I guess it’s OK. But you should make it clear to the cashier.

W: Excuse me, sir. Which bus should I take if I go to Central Park?
M: The No. 3 is heading in that direction. But you’ll wait at least 20 minutes for it in the rush hour.
W: That’s too long. I think I’d call a taxi.
M: Maybe it’s not a good idea, either. Taking a taxi is not worth it. It’ll take you 25 minutes there. There seems to be a traffic jam. Why not walk to the park? You can go straight from the opposite museum, and when you see a large parking lot, you’re almost there. That’ll take nearly 30 minutes.
W: You’re right. Although a 30-minute walk is tiring, it’s the best option for now.
M: Exactly.
W: Thank you very much.

W: Yes, Eric. Come in please.
M: I’ve made a tough decision. I have to give up my job now.
W: It comes as a bit of surprise. Why do you want to leave?
M: My parents live in Finland. You know it’s far away. They hope I’ll work there and spend more time with them. It takes me about 10 hours to fly from Shanghai to Finland each time.
W: But you can visit them more often during the holidays. What about I permit you 10 more days off each year? Or I can help you apply for a pay rise. Plus, you’ll get a golden handshake if you can work in our American branch for at least 5 years. Do you want to go there? I truly appreciate your work.
M: Thank you, Ms. Thomas. But I’ve already made up my mind.
W: Well, I feel sorry about it.

W: Colin, you got the highest score on the English exam again. How I envy you!
M: You did make progress this time, especially in reading and writing parts.
W: But I’m still dissatisfied with my spoken English. It’s my biggest problem.
M: Cheer up, Tina. Let me help you find the right way to learn English. When you’re studying a language, the keyword is patience. It’s of the greatest importance, because nobody can master a language all at once.
W: Oh, yeah. But what am I supposed to do? Find some foreign friends or go abroad to learn it?
M: Not exactly. You can just make full use of every morning to practice English.
W: Should I get up earlier every day?
M: You don’t have to do so. Actually, there are indeed many chances in the morning that you can grasp to learn English. For example, you can listen to English news while you are dressing and washing. At the same time, you can imitate and speak English loudly. You need to take every opportunity to learn.
W: Practice makes perfect, right?
M: You said it.

A new era of AI (artificial intelligence) is coming. AI has made its way into a variety of industries, which benefits both businesses and consumers. More and more companies have used it in their products, such as AlphaGo, self-driving, facial recognition, online assistants and so on. Generally, there are two types of AI: weak AI and strong AI. Weak AI is an AI system that is designed and trained to complete a specific task. For example, Apple’s Siri can answer people’s simple questions and obey a programmed order. But it can’t work without humans. Strong AI differs from weak AI in this part most. Strong AI can solve problems and find solutions without humans, such as the self-driving car. It can control a vehicle without human involvement, and avoid unexpected obstacles, such as passersby. As a whole, AI can make human life easy and convenient, and many experts believe the future of AI is bright. But it is expensive and requires complex systems to operate. There are still many problems to solve, such as …

根据第三段中“The large drone is usually powered by a motor, but the motor loses efficiency as you shrink it. So, Chen says, “For an insect-sized drone, you need to look for alternatives.” The principal alternative until now has been employing a small, rigid actuator (执行器) built from new materials. Chen designed a more agile tiny drone using soft actuators instead of hard ones.”(大型无人机通常由电机驱动,但当你缩小它时,电机就会失去效率。
根据第三段中“According to Chen, he overcame many problems when building the drone. The insect-sized drone requires a fundamentally different construction from a larger one. The large drone is usually powered by a motor, but the motor loses efficiency as you shrink it.”(据Chen说,他在制造无人机时克服了许多问题。

根据文章第四段“Another trait is that forever -late-comers are more likely to be multitaskers.(永远迟到的人的另一个特点可能是多重任务的)”可知,永远迟到的人的特点可能是一次要处理很多任务,是多重任务的,故选B。
根据文章最后一段“But scientists are starting to work on strategies that can slowly improve our punctuality. For people who constantly underestimate tasks, breaking down an activity into detailed steps can help people estimate how long something will take more accurately.(对于那些经常低估任务的人来说,将一项任务分解成详细的步骤可以帮助人们准确地估计这项任务花的时间。)”
根据文章第一段“Anyone can be late a handful of times, but to be the person who is always late - that’s an art, a frustrating art. Or, a side effect of your personality traits, scientists have found.(任何人都可能迟到几次,但要成为一个总是迟到的人,这是一门艺术,一门令人沮丧的艺术。或者,科学家发现,这是你性格特征点副作用。)”以及后文对迟到人的特征的分析可知,本文主要介绍迟到可能是与性格相关的,故选C。

【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了几种可以帮助对抗愤怒的方法。
36.根据上文“Anger is the most destructive emotion. When you are in a temper, you make hasty ill-considered decisions that you will probably regret. You will also regret reckless language spoken without thought.(愤怒是最具破坏性的情绪。当你脾气不好的时候,你会草率地做出你可能会后悔的决定。你也会后悔不经思考就说出鲁莽的语言)”以及后文“Here are some ways that you can combat the causes of anger.(这里有一些方法可以帮助你克服愤怒的根源)”可知,空处应是过渡句,由生气的坏处过渡到如何克服愤怒,所以B项“What can be done to control anger?(怎样才能控制愤怒呢?)”
37.分析设空,位于段首,是本段的中心句,所以根据后文“You have to accept that sometimes things do go wrong and that people are not always lovely. Try to accept that other people do behave in ways that will make you both frustrated and angry. Often, there might be an excellent reason why a person acted in away that you found unacceptable.(你必须接受有时事情会出错,人们并不总是可爱的。试着接受别人的行为方式会让你既沮丧又生气。通常,可能会有一个很好的理由来解释为什么一个人的行为让你无法接受)”可知,本段主要讲述了你需要改变你对世界运作方式的态度,所以E项“You need to change your attitude to the way the world works.(你需要改变你对世界运作方式的态度)”符合文意。故选E项。
38.根据前文“Realizing that no one is perfect is a good start to avoiding getting angry.(意识到人无完人是避免生气的好开始)”以及后文“Neither will they behave in the same way that you would in a given situation.(他们的行为也不会和你在特定情况下的行为一样)”可知,本段主要讲述了,不要用自己的标准去看待他人,所以G项“Also, you need to accept that not everyone has the same standards as you.(此外,你需要接受并不是每个人都有和你一样的标准)”符合本段主题。故选G项。
39.根据前文“Reacting angrily is a hard habit to break. The trick is to avoid reacting when faced with a situation that usually angers. Anger is a negative reaction, but in this type of situation, there is no value in reacting by forming positive thoughts.(愤怒是一个很难改掉的习惯。诀窍是在面对通常令人愤怒的情况时避免做出反应。愤怒是一种消极的反应,但在这种情况下,形成积极的想法是没有价值的)”可知,本段主要讲述了不要在愤怒的情况下做出反应,所以C项“You need to learn not to respond at all.(你要学会完全不回应)”符合本段主题。故选C项。
40.分析设空,位于段尾,是对前文的总结,根据前文“Don’t take the easy way when you get angry. We all get tempted to throw something, hit something, or scream when we are angry. You might say you feel better after an angry outburst, but that is just the after-effect of the adrenalin (肾上腺素) your body released while you were angry. A reaction like that is the easy way. It is much harder to stay calm, to walk away from conflict, or to take a deep breath and act normally.(当你生气的时候,不要轻易就范。当我们生气的时候,我们都会想要扔东西,打东西,或者尖叫。你可能会说你在生气后感觉好多了,但那只是你生气时身体释放的肾上腺素的后遗症。这样的反应很简单。要想保持冷静,远离冲突,或者深呼吸,正常行事,都要困难得多)”可知,D项“That, however, is what you must do if you are to stop anger.(然而,如果你要停止愤怒,那就是你必须做的)”符合文意,和前文构成转折关系,总结前文。

故填a。

分析句子可知,此处为动词不定式to do作后置定语修饰dream,构成The dream to do“去做……的梦想”。故填to compete。

67. Since that day, Eugene had never expected to meet the two officers again. But three months later, he saw a cop’s car pull over outside the shelter, and Officer Jackson got off. Eugene was shocked. “I just have to give you something, Eugene,” Officer Jackson said. He gave Eugene an envelope containing $12,000 inside. The two officers had started a campaign for Eugene and managed to raise that amount in three months. “You can slowly start a new life with this money, friend,” Officer Jackson said encouragingly. Eugene was deeply touched by their kindness.
A few months later, Eugene was a changed man. He got a job at the shelter and rented an apartment nearby. He was also continuing to seek help and meet a psychologist to heal the wounds his past had given him. Every day before going to work, he would clean up his appearance and face his colleagues and work in the best state. People at the shelter all loved the warm and positive man, all thanks to the two kind officers.
