I was 68 when I first stepped n stage as a standup cmedian in 2003. I’d never set ft in a cmedy club befre. I’ve always been a perfrmer - I’ve wrked as a singer, actr and musician - but all that came t an end after 9/11. I live in New Yrk, and we watched the twin twers fall frm my apartment building. Fr a year afterwards, nbdy wanted t g ut r be entertained.
It was then that I started t think abut cmedy. I realised peple needed t laugh, t enjy themselves again, and thught that with a little training I culd d it. I tk a few classes, tried t wrk ut a rutine, and finally plucked up the curage t get up n stage. That first time was terrifying. I had n idea what the audience wuld make f me.
In New Yrk, cmedians are typically yung men with beards. It’s hard enugh t break thrugh as a wman, even harder as smene ld enugh t be their grandmther. As I stepped n stage that first time, peple laughed nervusly. They were clearly surprised t see me. I intrduced myself, stated my age and tried my first jke. There was silence. But by the time I gt t the third line, peple were prperly laughing, I was addicted.
Nw my sets differ. I might be n stage fr 10 minutes in frnt f a dzen peple, r my ne-wman shw is a full hur in frnt f a crwd f 100. Even tday, I’m nervus befre I step ut. My first line is, “Hell, everybdy. I’m 88 and three-quarters years ld. I’m telling yu that in case I dn’t make it all the way thrugh the shw.” Then peple laugh and I relax.
After a shw, peple yung and ld cme up t me, saying what an inspiratin I am. They say they want t be as active as me when they reach my age. I’m pleased I can shw that as an lder persn yu dn’t need t take a back seat in life.
I’ve n intentin f stpping cmedy. I’m taking all these pills trying t stay alive, and I hpe t still be perfrming when I’m 100. My gal is t still be up there making peple laugh. It’s hard wrk, but it stps me being bred. I’d nly be playing glf therwise

Satellites are already in use fr s many purpses tday — frm weather frecasting t cmmunicatins, GPS, and mre.
Since the late 1970s, satellites such as the Eurpean Space Agency’s (ESA) CrySat-2 and the US Space Agency’s ICESat-2, have als been used t mnitr changes in the Arctic sea ice.
Data suggests that sea ice is thinning ver time due t climate change. Over the last 40 years, the extent f Arctic ice cver has been declining at a rate f 13% per decade. Hwever, existing ways f measurement d nt prvide a clear and cntinuus picture f the state f sea ice.
These satellites use special radar r laser-based altimeter instruments (雷达或激光测高仪). Sea ice thickness is then calculated as the difference between the height f the ice and the tp f the water (ice level—sea level). This methd wrks well during the winter mnths.
Unfrtunately, satellite-based sea ice thickness measurements are inaccurate during the summer mnths: the time f the year with the greatest melting. This melting creates a pl f liquid water n the surface. As a result, the simple calculatin (ice level—sea level) des nt wrk as radar systems are unable t differentiate between cean water and ice, thus making measurements inaccurate.
Last September, scientists develped a new methd t tackle this age-ld issue. The new methd cmbined cmputer mdeling and satellite data t predict ice thickness — all year rund. The research team led by Jack Landy, a scientist at the University f Trmsø (The Arctic University f Nrway), used the new methd t distinguish between seawater and ice.
The researchers built a mdel f the radar system’s predicted data and crss-referenced these values t thse cllected by a satellite. This mdel allws the researchers t btain accurate, year-rund Arctic sea ice thickness data.
Accrding t Dr. Michel Tsamads frm University Cllege Lndn, the new advanced climate mdel “will imprve bth the shrt-term frecasts fr the weather at the mid-latitudes (中纬度地区) and the lng-term frecasts that shw what climate we will have in the future.”
    8. What des the satellite data tell us?
    A. The Arctic ice will n lnger exist in fur decades.
    B. Sea ice cver is melting at a rate f 13% per year.
    C. The ESA’s satellites prvide clearer pictures.
    D. Sea ice is becming increasingly thinner.
    9. What makes the ice level t sea level measurements inaccurate?
    A. Inactin f the laser-based altimeter instruments in summer.
    B. Radar systems’ inability t distinguish seawater frm ice.
    C. There being technical difficulty calculating the height f the ice.
    D. There being n way t cnsistently detect melt pls n ice.
    10. What des the new methd aim t d?
    A. Prvide accurate frecasts fr the weather.
    B. Replace satellites in mnitring sea ice changes.
    C. Get a reliable summertime recrd f sea ice thickness.
    D. Test the efficiency f machine learning in climate change.
11 What des Dr. Michel Tsamads think f the new mdel?
    A. It will be useful in different ways.
    B. It will prve envirnmentally friendly.
    C. It has a shrt-term impact n climate research.
    D. It needs imprvement t predict the Arctic’s future.

First impressins can set a lasting tne, but there is ften smething dubtful. Psychlgists have dcumented a phenmenn knwn as the liking gap, whereby tw peple meeting fr the first time rutinely underestimate hw much their cunterparts (对应方) like them. A new study finds that the liking gap ccurs in grup settings t and affects hw well grups functin.
In ne experiment, the researchers divided 159 participants int grups f three and asked them t have a cnversatin. They then surveyed the participants individually abut hw much they liked each f their partners, hw much they thught each partner liked them, and hw much they thught their partners liked each ther. On average, peple liked their partners mre than they believed their partners liked them, and thught themselves t be the least liked in the grup.
In a subsequent experiment, the researchers asked similar questins f engineering students wh had wrked tgether in design cmpetitins fr varying lengths f time. Here, t, peple tended t underestimate the degree t which they were liked, regardless f hw lng they had knwn their teammates — and their dim views f their wn likability reduced their willingness t ask thers fr help, give hnest feedback, and wrk tgether in the future.
A final experiment invlving a brad sample f wrkers shwed that the misperceptins (误解) were strngest amng teammates and that they decreased team effectiveness and jb satisfactin. It als fund a pssible explanatin fr the liking gap: Peple tend t fcus n psitive thughts when reflecting n hw much they like smene else “(I’m happy that she gt a prmtin”) but fall victim t mre negative nes when cnsidering hw thers view them “(I gt a prmtin, s she might be green with envy”).
Managers shuld think carefully nt just abut hw teammates regard ne anther but abut hw team members think they themselves are regarded, the researchers say; crrecting misperceptins culd bst team satisfactin and perfrmance. “If nly peple knew hw psitively their teammates actually felt abut them, they might cmmunicate better, feel mre included n their teams, and be happier verall with their jbs,” they write.
    12. What des the liking gap refer t?
    A. A type f scial anxiety disrder.B. Lve amng different age grups.
    C. Misjudging thers’ pinins f us.D. Hlding back thers’ evaluatins.
    13. What did the experiment in paragraph 2 reveal?
    A. Peple did nt like t give hnest cmments.
    B. Peple tended t think little f their partners.
    C. Peple were quite demanding twards thers.
    D. Peple were nt very cnfident abut themselves.
    14. What des the underlined wrd “dim” in paragraph 3 prbably mean?
    A. Cnflicting.B. Negative.C. Cnventinal.D. Strng.
    15. What d the researchers suggest managers stress?
    A. Emplyees’ viewpints n themselves.
    B. The relatinship between team members.
    C. Emplyee prmtin and jb satisfactin.
    D. Cmmunicatin between leaders and emplyees.
