Mielewski had been harbring a grwing cncern abut hw her sn wuld survive in the future with n driver's license and his parents n lnger arund.
Ann Arbr Academy, a schl fr students with learning and scial differences, hsted driving lessns. Hdges designed the simulated drives and versaw the study. Frd fted the bill. The gal, in part, was t prvide an pprtunity fr thse with autism spectrum disrder t imprve their driving skills."Many f them wuld like t drive, but wanting t drive and being able t drive are tw different things,"Hdges said.
Hdges said she hpes the individualized driving sessins planned fr phase tw will bear fruit. She hpes similar prgrams appear elsewhere. “In the best case, I wuld hpe that parents ,wuld learn that their, teens r yung adults wh have autism spectrum disrder actually may be able t drive successfully," she said.“And there may be sme tls ut there that they may nt have been aware f.”

Sighs have lng been seen as a sign f depressin, frustratin r even despair, leading us t ask the sighing persn,"What's wrng?" A recent study turns that belief n its head.Instead f seeing sighs as sadness r annyance, recgnize them fr what they accmplish— stress relief, said Dr David Spiegel."Peple think taking a deep breath is the way t ease stress,"he said."But it turns ut that exhaling ( 呼 气 ) slwly is a better way t calm yurself.”
Spiegel and his team cnducted a study, cmparing three different types f deep breathing with mindfulness meditatin (冥想). The gal was t see whether a breathing technique might be as effective as meditatin in reducing stress. Researchers srted 114 peple int fur grups and asked them t practice mindful meditatin r ne breathing exercise—bx breathing, cyclic hyperventilatin r cyclic sighing—fr five minutes a day fr 28 days. Bx breathing requires a persn t breathe in, hld, breathe ut, and pause equally t the cunt f fur. In cyclic hyperventilatin, a persn breathes in deeply and ut quickly—the inhalatins are much lnger than the exhalatins. In cyclic sighing, a persn inhales thrugh the nse until the lungs are halfway full, then pauses briefly. The lungs are then filled cmpletely with anther breath, and then the breath is slwly exhaled ut f the muth.
The team then assessed mds, anxiety levels and sleep behavir after each breathing r meditatin sessin. Sleep was nt affected, the study fund. All frms f breathing and meditatin increased psitive md and imprved anxiety. Hwever, breathing was mre effective than meditatin, with cyclic sighing making the mst difference, the study fund.
Deliberately taking a slw, deep breath, hlding it, and then letting it ut slwly activates the parasympathetic nervus system, respnsible fr cntrlling hw the bdy rests and digests, Spiegel said. Heart rate slws, bld pressure drps, digestin is imprved and the mind begins t wind dwn and relax.
“We believe breathing is a pathway int mind-bdy cntrl," he added.“It's part f the autnmic system like digestin and yur heartbeat, but unlike thse bdy functins, yu can easily regulate breathing.

    B. Meditatin is useless at increasing psitive mds.
    C. Cyclic sighing can imprve anxiety mst effectively.
    D. Mediatin affects sleep mre bviusly than deep breathing.
    31. What des Spiegel intend t express in the last paragraph?

Knwn as physilgical synchrny, this effect is strnger when tw peple engage deeply in a cnversatin r cperate clsely n a task."Physilgical synchrny shws up even when peple are talking ver Zm, an nline chat platfrm," said study c-authr Vesna Nvak.
In experiments with human participants, the cmputer was able t differentiate fur different cnversatins with as much as 75% accuracy. The study is ne f the first f its kind t train artificial intelligence hw t recgnize aspects f a cnversatin based n the participants' physilgy alne.
“The cmputer culd tell if yu're a bre," lead authr Chatterjee said.“A mdified versin f ur system culd measure the level f interest a persn is taking in the cnversatin, hw harmnius the tw f yu are and hw engaged the ther persn is in the cnversatin.”
Studies have shwn that physilgical synchrny can predict hw well tw peple will wrk tgether t accmplish a task. The degree f synchrny als crrelates with hw much empathy a patient perceives in a therapist r the level f engagement students feel with their teachers.
“Yu culd prbably use ur system t determine which peple in an rganizatin wrk better tgether in a grup and which are naturally ppsed," Chatterjee said.
This aspect f affective cmputing hlds huge ptential fr prviding real-time feedback fr educatrs, therapists r even autistic peple, Nvak said, "There are a lt f ptential applicatins in this space.”
