I felt guilty and ashamed and asked Gd t frgive me, which I thught was all I needed t d t give me peace. Using my gd exam results I went n further with my educatin. Studying in Kwara State Cllege f Educatin, I culd nt have peace in my mind, thinking, “Yu have dne wrng. The result is nt yurs.”
At last I went t the leaders f my church t ask fr help, wh tld me that it is nt enugh t say srry t Gd. I must shw that I am srry by putting right what I did wrng. Fr me, that meant telling the principal f the cllege that I cheated in the exams and that I shuld nt have gt int the cllege. I wrte a letter t him, telling him what I had dne and tk the letter t the principal’s ffice and gave it t his secretary, wh read it first. “If this gets t the principal yu will g t prisn,” she said, “G away and think abut it.”
I went back t the church leaders and tld them what the secretary said and they said I must still g t the principal. S the next day, I went back t the secretary, wh tk me t see the principal this time. T my surprise, he tld me nt t be afraid but t g t the persn wh was in charge f the exams. The wrd “inquiry (r enquiry)” cmes frm the Latin wrds “in”, r “inward”, and “quaere”, which is the verb “t questin”. S inquiry is nt just asking questins, it is questining int smething. It has the quality f getting int smething, ging deeper, s yu can see what yu haven’t been able t see befre.
When yu begin an inquiry, yu are deliberately setting ut t search fr what yu dn’t knw. Yu have t have the cnfidence t say that yu might be able t figure it ut fr yurself. And in that prcess, yu get a sense f real excitement and energy. That energy is bth part f, and cntributes t, what we ften call “engagement(参与)”. But in rder t use inquiry t answer yur questin, yu have t becme gd at knwing what yu dn’t knw. I wuld argue that that’s exactly the ppsite f what happens in schls. Classrms fcus n what yu d knw (r are suppsed t knw) and leave yu unprepared t deal with the things yu dn’t knw.
In sme way, we are all surrunded by a bubble(气泡) f the knwn. When yu “knw” smething, yu identify hw yur mdel f the wrld fits with and explains what yu see. Living in the bubble f the knwn is cmfrtable and cmfrting. Yu see what yu knw, and yu knw what yu see. But t d inquiry, yu have t get gd at always lking fr the bundaries f yur knwledge, and at the limitatins and cntradictins within what is knwn. That is what scientists d. They are always lking fr the limits, the bundaries and the pints at which their theries fail t explain the wrld. Scientists, basically, are always lking fr that “dr” frm the knwn t the unknwn, where they can press frth and push and, in a sense, expand the bubble f the knwn. Inquiry is the actin yu take when yu deliberately challenge the limits f yur knwledge.
28. What des the writer want t tell us?
A. The meaning f inquiry.B. The way t make an inquiry.
C. The methd f classrm teaching.D. The limitatin f classrm teaching.
29. Frm the first paragraph, we can see the wrd “inquiry” _____________.
A. has different meaningsB. cmes frm the English language
C. has little t d with asking questinsD. means explring deeper int smething
30. T be gd at inquiry, yu shuld be gd at _____________.
A. asking fr help frm thersB. knwing what yu dn’t knw
C. staying fcused in the classrmD. understanding what is taught t yu.
31. What des the underlined wrd “where” refer t?
A. The dr t the unknwn.B. Within the bubble.
C. In the real wrld.D. In the wrld f the unknwn.
D
When yu walk with a backpack, d yu knw hw the things inside mve frm side t side? Nw scientists have figured ut hw t tap int that mvement t prduce electricity.
Picture a pendulum(摆锤) fixed t a backpack frame and stabilized with springs n either side. The pack’s weight is attached t the pendulum, s the pendulum swings side t side as yu walk. Then a machine is driven by that swinging mvement, and prduces electrical current t charge a battery.
Vlunteers carried the pack while walking n a running machine and wre masks t measure the flw f O2, and CO2. When the vlunteers were walking with the slightly swinging 20-pund lad, the device did nt significantly affect their metablic(新陈代谢的) rate cmpared t when they carried the same weight fixed in place. In fact, the energy-harvesting pack reduced the frces f acceleratin they’d feel in a regular pack, which might mean greater cmfrt fr a lng hike. And the device did prduce a steady trickle(涓流) f electricity. If yu up the lad t 45 punds, it culd fully charge a smartphne nly after 12 hurs. The details are in the jurnal Ryal Sciety Open Science.
The device prduces electricity frm human mvement and has been identified as a wrkable slutin t prviding a renewable energy surce fr prtable electrnic devices. It is particularly useful t thse wh wrk in remte areas, as these peple ften carry a lt f weight in a backpack fr their explratin.
But here’s a real cnundrum: the energy-harvesting device currently weighs five punds. The researchers say that’s abut fur punds t many t be a smart alternative t batteries. S they hpe that mre research lets them lighten the lad s that they can ensure the pack charges yur phne up withut weighing yu dwn.
32. What des Paragraph 2 mainly talk abut?
A. Hw the device wrks.B. What the device lks like.
C. Wh the device is designed fr.D. Why scientists designed the device.
33. What can we knw abut the device frm Paragraph 3?
A. It was useless fr a lng walk.
B. It failed t prduce steady electricity.
C. It harvested energy as the vlunteers walked.
D. Ryal Sciety Open Service cnducted the study f the device.
34. What des the underlined wrd “cnundrum” in the last paragraph mean?
A. bnd.B. prblem.C. decisin.D. methd.
