In 1999, John Smyth, a high-school teacher decided it was time to retire. Together with his wife Helen, he set off on a journey around Australia. But when they returned, John found he missed the classroom, so he spent another eight years doing casual teaching.
Then he heard about a program known as Volunteers for Isolated Students’ Education(VISE), which pairs up energetic people with educational experience, usually retired teachers, with children whose schooling is largely done remotely, because they live too far away from towns and cities to attend regular schools. John grew up in the country and as a kid in the bush, he always dreamed of running with circus, but he didn’t even have much chance to see the circus in person. Therefore he was immediately interested in the program and got a travelling post as a teacher with Stardust Circus.
The lesson timetable was built around the kids performance schedules. “The eight-year-old I tutored was an awesome gymnast who was part of the teeterboard(跷跷板) act,” he explains. “A big guy would jump on the other side, he would swing up in the air, do a couple of twirls(旋转) and land on his uncle’s shoulders, and his uncle was standing on the boy’s father’s shoulders!”
The circus still includes some animal acts, including lions, monkeys, horses, goats and pigs. John and his wife Helen found it extraordinary enough to sink into sleep to the sound of lions roaring, but one day the lion-trainer, Matt, gave him a very special privilege, inviting him in to meet four 13-month-old lions in person. While it was understandably a little scary at first, for John it was a never-to-be-forgotten experience, which helped him realize his boyhood dream in his 75th year.
24、What can we know about the children in the Stardust Circus?
    A. They missed the classroom. B. Most of them lived downtown.
    C. They were dreaming of travelling. D. They were lacking in regular schooling.
25、What can we learn from the passage?
    A. John taught the gymnast to perform in the air.
    B. Teachers of the program had a flexible schedule.
    C. John’s dream came true as a volunteer in the circus.
    D. The couple were fed up with the sound of lions roaring.
26、How did John probably feel after meeting the little lions?
    A. Scared. B. Excited. C. Calm. D. Regretful.
27、What is the best title for the text?
    A. Running with Circus B. Missing Regular School
    C. Enjoying Retirement D. Travelling with Animals
Food allergies have risen in the United States over the last few decades. Research suggests that 40 years ago the actual rate of food allergies was less than 1%. But this year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released data showing that almost 6% of U.S. adults and children have a food allergy.
When the body labels a food as harmful, the immune system treats that food like a threat. It sends chemical-signaling proteins, called cytokines, to fight the invader. These cytokines help regulate the body’s immune response and the accompanying inflammation(发炎).
“Someone can have a very mild reaction and just start to feel itchy, like they just had a bug bite. But it’s just this itchiness that came out of nowhere,” says Dr. Waheeda Samady, Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. “There are other people that will describe like a sense of doom.”
One emerging theory as to why some people get food allergies is that food particles(颗粒) first get into the body through a disrupted skin barrier, and the immune system in turn tags food proteins as an invader—something to be fought. Then, when that same food is eaten later, the body mounts an immune response.
One group with a disrupted skin barrier? Kids with eczema(湿疹). These children are at a much higher risk of developing a food allergy compared to other kids. And the earlier and more severely they get eczema, the higher the risk is for developing food allergies.
This year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) added sesame to its list of major food allergens. The rest of the list includes: milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, crab, lobster, shrimp, tree nuts, peanuts and soybeans.
If you think you have a food allergy, Waheeda recommends consulting a healthcare provider if you have access to one. A doctor can preform an allergy test or, in some cases, give a diagnosis based on symptoms alone. Getting professional advice can free you from avoiding foods to which you may not actually be allergic.
    28、What is a food allergy?
    A. A person regards a food as a threat.
    B. Your body protects yourself from being invaded.
    C. Cytokines help regulate the body’s temperature response.
    D. The immune system sends a chemical signal proteins to your body.
29、What does the underlined word“disrupted”in paragraph 4 probably mean?
    A. Tough. B. Broken. C. Fragile D. Tight.
30、How is the new theory supported?
    A. By contrast. B. By repetition.
    C. By giving examples. D. By offering explanations.
31、Where is the passage probably taken from?
    A. A newspaper. B. A guidebook. C. A science report. D. A business plan.
Some people claim they “never forget a face.” But what does that saying mean? Is there really no limit to the number of faces a person can remember?
A new study has found that, on average, people can remember as many as 5,000 faces.
That number comes from a group of researchers at the University of York in England. They published their findings on facial recognition this month in the Proceedings of The Royal Society B, Biological Sciences.
There have been many studies recently on facial recognition technology. But the authors of this study say theirs is the first time that scientists have been able to put a number to the abilities of humans to recognize faces.
Facial recognition technology is used to screen people before they visit the Statue of Liberty in New York, US.Jenkins said the ability to tell individual people apart is “clearly important.”
Scientists have been working on computer technology to remember and identify faces since the 1960s. Today, facial recognition technology is used in many ways, including by law enforcement agencies to prevent crime and violence. Governments use it to keep secret areas secure and, in extreme cases, control populations. Some governments use the software to watch people and find out where they go and what they do.
People who took part in the study were also shown thousands of photographs of famous people. Researchers asked them which ones they recognized. To make sure they knew these people, researchers required them to recognize two different photos of each famous person. The results showed that the participants knew between 1,000 and 10,000 faces.
Jenkins said one explanation may be that some people have a natural ability for remembering faces. “There are differences in how much attention people pay to faces and how well they process the information.” he said.
Jenkins also said it could be because of different social environments. Some people may have grown up in more populated places. So, they may have had more social contact throughout their lives.
32、Which one is the function of facial recognition technology?
    A. Stopping crimes happening.
    B. Monitoring people in secret areas.
    C. Controlling populations frequently.
    D. Screening people after visiting places of interest.
33、What’s the reason for participants to know a wide range between 1,000 and 10,000 faces?
    A. They were given different photographs.
    B. They are living in different surroundings.
    C. Whether they are familiar with famous people.
    D. They have different talents for remembering faces.
34、What can we know according to the passage?
    A. Facial recognition technology has been developed recently.
    B. Participants are required to pay full attention during the research.
    C. It is possible for some people to remember all the faces they meet.
    D. It’s the first time to put a number to the abilities of humans to recognize faces.
35、What is the passage mainly about?
    A. A new research was published.
    B. People’s recognition of faces is amazing.
    C. People can remember famous people easily.
    D. Modern technology helps people remember faces.

After repeating the name and then commenting on it, use it once or twice more in conversation. Do this either by addressing the person directly or referring to him while speaking to someone else (“Hey, Jim! Bill and I were just talking about that new Brad Pitt movie!”) ④________ Be careful not to overuse the name, though, since that can come off as awkward or insincere.
Using a person’s name is a key to opening doors for you and to maintaining an initial rapport(和谐的关系) that could make this person a new friend for life or a lifelong business partner. ⑤________
    A. You can write down the name when it is necessary.
    B. When the conversation ends, use the person’s name again.
    C. The brain responds more actively when a question is answered.

A shop owner placed a sign above his door that said: “Puppies For Sale.”
Signs like this always have a way of attracting young children, and to no surprise, a boy saw the sign and approached the owner, “How much are you going to sell the puppies for?” he asked. The store owner replied, “Anywhere from $30 to $50.” The little boy pulled out some change from his pocket. “I have $2.37,” he said. “Can I please look at them?”
The shop owner smiled and whistled. Out came Lady, who ran down the aisle of his shop followed by five teeny, tiny balls of fur. One puppy was lagging(走得慢) considerably behind. Immediately the little boy singled out the lagging puppy and said, “What’s wrong with that little dog?”
The shop owner explained that the veterinarian had examined the little puppy and had discovered it didn’t have a hip socket. It would always be lame(瘸的). The little boy became excited. “That is the puppy that I want to buy.” The shop owner said, “No, you don’t want to buy that little dog. If you really want him, I’ll just give him to you.”
The little boy got quite upset. He looked straight into the store owner’s eyes, pointing his finger, and said, “I don’t want you to give him to me. That little dog is worth every bit as much as all the other dogs and I’ll pay full price. In fact, I’ll give you $2.37 now, and 50 cents a month until I have him paid for.” The shop owner said, “You really don’t want to buy this little dog. He is never going to be able to run and jump and play with you like the other puppies.”

If you’ve been with us from the beginning, you’ll know that we began our tour in Amsterdam, walked our way through Germany and Austria, down into Italy, back up through Switzerland and this week we are in Paris. We won’t spend much time at the big attractions. In a tourist destination like Paris, even a new traveler knows to see the famous art museums of Paris and no one misses the Eiffel Tower. But we’re going to some of the places the average tourist misses. For instance, the best view in town may not be from the top of the Eiffel Tower, but from the top of the Montparnasse Tower. The view includes the Eiffel Tower as well as everything else. It’s cheaper and easier to get up here. We can join a ride on a public bus. I like the views from Line 63. Or we can cruise through Paris in one of their river tour boats. To cover more territory, traffic and streets for you, I ride the subway. Many European cities have subway systems, the one in Paris is really amazing. You can go anywhere in town for a reasonable price. And don’t worry, getting lost is cheap. In fact, you could stay underground all day long on one ticket about the cost of a cup of coffee.
    21、答案:A
根据Seville, Spain部分提到的“Seville in Spain takes the top spot as Europe’s most walkable city, offering the shortest walking route between the top four tourist attractions.(西班牙的塞维利亚被评为欧洲最适合步行的城市,在四大旅游景点之间的步行路线最短)”,Venice, Italy部分提到“Just under half an hour of walking here will take you on a tour of the impressive Grand Canal, Doge’s Palace, St Mark’s Square, Basilica and bell tower, all in only 1.3 miles.(在这里步行不到半小时,你就可以参观令人印象深刻的大运河、总督府、圣马可广场、大教堂和钟楼,所有这些都只有1.3英里)”,Porto, Portugal部分提到“Nestled along Portugal’s picturesque coast, Porto comes in third with its top attractions all covered by a 30-minute walking route.(坐落在葡萄牙风景如画的海岸上,波尔图排名第三,其顶级景点都是30分钟的步行路线)”以及Florence, Italy部分提到“A 1.6 mile route covers the awe-inspiring Piazzale Michelangelo; the famous Uffizi Gallery; the Piazza del Duomo where you will be amazed at the magnificent Florence Cathedral; and the Galleria dell’Accademia, home to Michelangelo’s masterpiece, the statue of David.(1.6英里长的路线包括令人敬畏的米开朗基罗广场;著名的乌菲齐美术馆;大教堂广场,宏伟的佛罗伦萨大教堂令您惊叹不已;还有学院美术馆,这里收藏着米开朗基罗的杰作——大卫雕像)”可知,文章提到塞尔维亚适合步行的路线是这四个景点中最短的。 故选A。
根据Porto, Portugal部分提到的“Meander along the Dom Luís I Bridge over the Douro River, head to the Clérigos Church Bell Tower and enjoy a riverfront walking place along the Cais da Ribeira.(沿着杜罗河上的Dom Luís I桥蜿蜒而行,前往Clérigos教堂钟楼,沿着Cais da Ribeira享受河边散步)”可知,在波尔图可以沿着河边散步,而河流最终流入大海,波尔图可能也位于海边。
根据文章第二段“Then he heard about a program known as Volunteers for Isolated Students' Education (VISE), which pairs up energetic people with educational experience, usually retired teachers, with children whose schooling is largely done remotely, because they live too far away from towns and cities to attend regular schools.(然后,他听说了一个名为“孤立学生教育志愿者”(VISE)的项目,该 项目将有教育经验的精力充沛的人(通常是退休教 师)与孩子们配对,因为孩子们住在离城镇太远的地方,无法上正规学校,所以他们的学业基本上是 远程完成的。)”
根据文章第二段“John grew up in the country and as a kid in the bush, he always dreamed of running with circus, but he didn't even have much chance to see the circus in person. (约翰在乡下 长大,小时候在灌木丛中,他一直梦想着和马戏团 一起巡演,但他甚至没有太多机会亲自去看马戏 团。)”和最后一段“While it was understandably a little scary at first, for John it was a never-to-be-forgotten experience, which helped him realize his boyhood dream in his 75th year.(尽管起初有点害怕,但对于 John来说,这是一个永远无法忘记的经历,这让他 在75岁这一年实现了儿时的梦想。)”
根据文章最后一段“but one day the lion-trainer, Matt, gave him a very special privilege, inviting him in to meet four 13-month-old lions in person. While it was understandably a little scary at first, for John it was a never-to-be-forgotten experience, which helped him realize his boyhood dream in his 75th year.(但是有一天,驯狮员给了他一 个特权,邀请他亲自去看4个13个月大的狮子。尽管 起初有点害怕,但对于John来说,这是一个永远无 法忘记的经历,这让他在75岁这一年实现了儿时的 梦想。)”可推知,John亲自看到了狮子,这便让他 实现了自己小时候的梦想,因此在看完狮子后,他 应该是很激动的,故选B。
    27、答案:A
根据文章第二段“Therefore he was immediately interested in the program and got a travelling post as a teacher with Stardust Circus.(因 此,他立刻对这个项目产生了兴趣,并在星空马戏 团获得了一个教师的职位。)”
根据第二段中“When the body labels a food as harmful, the immune system treats that food like a threat. It sends chemical-signaling proteins, called cytokines, to fight the invader. These cytokines help regulate the body’s immune response and the accompanying inflammation (发炎).(当身体将某种食物标记为有害食物时,免疫系统就会将其视为威胁。它会发送一种叫做细胞因子的化学信号蛋白来对抗入侵者。这些细胞因子有助于调节身体的免疫反应和伴随的炎症。)”和第三段中““Someone can have a very mild reaction and just start to feel itchy, like they just had a bug bite. But it’s just this itchiness that came out of nowhere,” says Dr. Waheeda Samady, Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.(“有些人可能会有非常轻微的反应,只是开始感到发痒,就像他们刚刚被虫子咬了一样。但是这种瘙痒是不知道从哪里来的,”西北大学范伯格医学院儿科学副教授Waheeda Samady博士说。)”可知,当发免疫系统发现有害食物时,就会发送细胞因子来对抗入侵者,从而引发过敏反应。所以食物过敏从本质上来说,就是你的身体保护你免受入侵的过程。故选B项。
    29、答案:B
解析:词句猜测题。结合常识和划线词下文“and the immune system in turn tags food proteins as an invader — something to be fought.(免疫系统反过来将食物蛋白质标记为入侵者——需要对抗的东西。)” 所以“food particles (颗粒) first get into the body through a disrupted skin barrier (食物颗粒首先通过disrupted皮肤屏障进入人体)”中“a disrupted skin”是指被破坏的皮肤。
第四段中“One emerging theory as to why some people get food allergies is that food particles (颗粒) first get into the body through a disrupted skin barrier, and the immune system in turn tags food proteins as an invader — something to be fought.(一种关于为什么有些人会对食物过敏的新理论是,食物颗粒首先通过被破坏的皮肤屏障进入人体,免疫系统反过来将食物蛋白质标记为入侵者——需要对抗的东西。)” These children are at a much higher risk of developing a food allergy compared to other kids. (患有湿疹的孩子。与其他孩子相比,这些孩子患食物过敏的风险要高得多。)”通过列举“患有湿疹的孩子患食物过敏的风险要高得多”来证明上述理论。故选C项。
    31、答案:A
结合最后一段专家的建议“If you think you have a food allergy, Waheeda recommends consulting a healthcare provider if you have access to one. A doctor can preform an allergy test or, in some cases, give a diagnosis based on symptoms alone. Getting professional advice can free you from avoiding foods to which you may not actually be allergic.(如果你认为你有食物过敏,Waheeda建议咨询医疗保健提供者,如果你有机会的话。医生可以进行过敏测试,或者在某些情况下,仅根据症状进行诊断。获得专业的建议可以让你免于避免那些你实际上可能不会过敏的食物。)”可推知,本文是针对读者的科普文本,以帮助普通民众认识和应对食物过敏,所以很可能出自报纸中与健康相关的版块。故选A项。
    32、答案:A
根据文章第六段“Today, facial recognition technology is used in many ways, including by law enforcement agencies to prevent crime and violence.(如今,面部识别技术运用了很多方面,包括执法机构用来预防犯罪和暴力。)”
根据文章倒数第二段“Jenkins said one explanation may be that some people have a natural ability for remembering faces. “There are differences in how much attention people pay to faces and how well they process the information.” he said.( Jenkins说道:“其中一种解释可能是一些人天生记住脸部的记忆力,差异就在于人们对面部关注度的不同以及他们助理信息的差异。”)”
根据文章第三段“There have been many studies recently on facial recognition technology. But the authors of this study say theirs is the first time that scientists have been able to put a number to the abilities of humans to recognize faces.(最近有许多关于面部识别技术的研究。但这项研究的作者表示,他们的研究是科学家首次能够用数字来表示人类识别人脸的能力。)”可知,这项研究的科学家是第一次能够使用数字来表示人类识别人脸的能力,故选D。
    35、答案:B
解析:主旨大意题。根据文章第一段“Some people claim they “never forget a face.” But what does that saying mean? Is there really no limit to the number of faces a person can remember?(一些人声称他们‘从来不会忘记过一张脸’。但这句话是什么意思呢?一个人能记住的脸的数量真的没有限制吗?)”可知,文章就第一段的提出的问题展开研究调查,再根据倒数第三段“The results showed that the participants knew between 1,000 and 10,000 faces.(研究表明,参加者能记住1000到10000万张脸。)”

②根据本段小标题“Ask(询问)”可知,本段主要介绍通过“询问”的方式来记住对方的名字,且根据空前“Speak the name back to the person in the form of a question. “Hi, I’m Katherine. I’m sorry, did you say Don or Dom?” Or “Robert, is it? Nice to meet you. I’m Katherine.”
且根据空后“Be careful not to overuse the name, though, since that can come off as awkward or insincere.(但是要注意,不要过度使用这个名字,因为这可能会让人觉得尴尬或者不真诚。)”
⑤根据空前“Using a person’s name is a key to opening doors for you and to maintaining an initial rapport(和谐的关系) that could make this person a new friend for life or a lifelong business partner.(使用一个人的名字是为你打开大门和保持最初融洽关系的关键,这可能会让这个人成为你的新朋友或者终生的商业伙伴。)”

The majority of the students took an active part in the contest and submitted their entries, in which participants showed respect for some people of great achievements and expressed their determination to make contributions to our country like them.
The contest has helped us to make goals in pursuing our idols and devoting ourselves to the whole world, which turned out to be both meaningful and successful.
“Well, I don’t walk so well myself.” said the little boy. He reached down and rolled up his pant leg to reveal a badly twisted, crippled left leg supported by a big metal brace. He looked up at the shop owner and softly replied, “The little puppy will need someone who understands!” The manager was compassionate. He insisted that he take the puppy free of cost. But the boy did not agree. He strongly argued, “The lame puppy is not worthless. We will pay for it the same price which you charge for the healthy ones.” Finally, the shop owner compromised and instructed the boy how to take good care of the little puppy.
The little boy took the little lame dog home happily. Ever since, they played together; they ate together; sometimes they even slept together. The little lame boy and the little lame puppy became best friends. Naturally, everybody deserves to be recognized, respected and loved. Every person has his own value and should never be judged by his outward appearance. Persons with disabilities need our special care, attention, consideration and encouragement. With our sincere support, they can achieve wonderful things in life and become an inspiration to all.
