Exercise seems t be gd fr the human brain, with many recent studies suggesting that regular exercise imprves memry and thinking skills. But an interesting new study asks whether the apparent cgnitive benefits frm exercise are real r just a placeb effect — that is, if we think we will be “smarter” after exercise, d ur brains respnd accrdingly? The answer has significant implicatins fr any f us hping t use exercise t keep ur minds sharp thrughut ur lives.
While many studies suggest that exercise may have cgnitive benefits, recently sme scientists have begun t questin whether the apparently beneficial effects f exercise n thinking might be a placeb effect. S researchers at Flrida State University in Tallahassee and the University f Illinis at Urbana-Champaign decided t fcus n expectatins, n what peple anticipate that exercise will d fr thinking. If peple’s expectatins jibe (吻合) clsely with the actual benefits, then at least sme f thse imprvements are prbably a result f the placeb effect and nt f exercise.
Fr the new study, which was published last mnth in PLOS One, the researchers recruited 171 peple thrugh an nline survey system, they asked half f these vlunteers t estimate by hw much a stretching and tning regimens (拉伸运动) perfrmed three times a week might imprve varius measures f thinking. The ther vlunteers were asked the same questins, but abut a regular walking prgram.
In actual experiments, stretching and tning prgram generally have little if any impact n peple’s cgnitive skills. Walking, n the ther hand, seems t substantially imprve thinking ability.
But the survey respndents believed the ppsite, estimating that the stretching and tning prgram wuld be mre beneficial fr the mind than walking. The estimates f benefits frm walking were lwer.
These data, while they d nt invlve any actual exercise, are gd news fr peple wh d exercise. “The results frm ur study suggest that the benefits f aerbic exercise are nt a placeb effect,” said Cary Stthart, a graduate student in cgnitive psychlgy at Flrida State University, wh led the study.
If expectatins had been driving the imprvements in cgnitin seen in studies after exercise, Mr. Stthart said, then peple shuld have expected walking t be mre beneficial fr thinking than stretching. They didn’t, implying that the changes in the brain and thinking after exercise are physilgically genuine.
The findings are strng enugh t suggest that exercise really des change the brain and may, in the prcess, imprve thinking, Mr. Stthart said. That cnclusin shuld encurage scientists t lk even mre clsely int hw, at a mlecular level, exercise remdels the human brain, he said. It als shuld encurage the rest f us t mve, since the benefits are, it seems, nt imaginary, even if they are in ur head.
11.Which f the fllwing abut the placeb effect is TRUE accrding t the passage?
A.It ccurs during exercise.B.It has cgnitive benefits.
C.It is just a mental reactin.D.It is a physilgical respnse.
12.Why did the researchers at the tw universities cnduct the research?
A.T discver the placeb effect in the exercise.
B.T prve the previus studies have a big drawback.
C.T test whether exercise can really imprve cgnitin.
D.T encurage mre scientists t get invlved in the research.
13.What can we knw abut the research Cary Stthart and his team carried ut?
A.They emplyed 171 peple t take part in the actual exercise.
B.The result f the research remved the recent dubt f sme scientists.
C.The participants thught walking had a greater impact n thinking ability.
D.Their cnclusin drives scientists t d research n the placeb effect.
14.What might be the best title fr the passage?
A.Is it necessary fr us t take exercise?B.Hw shuld peple exercise prperly?
C.What makes us smarter during exercise?D.Des exercise really make us smarter?

故填when。
故填were cming.
