Passage 1 Amazing Facts abut Blue Whales
Blue whales are the largest creature ever t have lived n Earth. Here are sme amazing facts and figures abut these incredible creatures.
Hw much des a blue whale weight?
Female blue whales weigh mre (190,000kg) than males (150,000kg). At arund 2,700kg newbrn blue whale weighs abut the same as an adult hippptamus(河马). The heart f a blue whale can weigh 450kg.
Hw lng des a blue whale live?
The ldest knwn blue whale was arund 110 years ld; hwever, up t 90 years ld is thught t be mre nrmal.
What des a blue whale eat?
Despite their enrmus(huge) size, they feed n tiny shrimp-like crustaceans called krill (磷虾)(as many as 40 millin every day) which they scp(舀) up in huge muthfuls and sieve(筛) frm the water using their baleen(鲸须).
They have lud, deep vices and can cmmunicate with ther whales hundreds f miles away. The sund they make can reach up t 188 decibels (anything ver 120-130 is painful fr humans). Only the sperm whale(抹香鲸) makes a luder sund.
The tngue f a blue whale weighs as much as an elephant and is s big a whle ftball team culd stand n it.
Mst blue whales migrate(迁徙) t cld waters t find fd and t warmer waters t breed. Females usually give birth t a calf(幼鲸) nce every tw r three years after a gestatin(怀孕) perid (pregnancy) f up t 12 mnths.
A blue whale calf can drink 250 litres f its mther's milk every day. It is weaned(断奶) after arund six mnths.
The majr bld vessel(血管) f a blue whale’s heart is s big that a baby culd crawl(爬行) thrugh it.
During their fur-mnth migratin, they eat very little, surviving mstly n reserves f blubber(鲸脂).
Althugh hunting blue whales has been banned(禁止) fr a lng time, they are still an endangered species with an estimated(估计) wrldwide ppulatin f 10,000 - 25,000.
Passage 2 Majr Threats t Blue Whales
Whaling(捕鲸) may have stpped but many ther human activities still threaten their existence.
The main threats ...
Hunting – thugh they are nt currently hunted, whalers are cnstantly pushing fr reprieve(延缓) and pse a cnstant risk, trying t cnduct s-called sustainable(可持续的) hunting. Pirate whaling is als a threat.
Pllutin – increasingly trubled by the build-up f txic(有毒的) chemicals frm plastic, litter and il spills(泄漏) in their systems, the health and fertility(生育力) f large whales culd be seriusly made up f pllutin.
Nise pllutin – blue whales rely n sund t navigate(导航) and cmmunicate. Nise frm military snar(声纳), il and gas drilling(钻) and explratin and shipping can seriusly disrupt(打扰) them and even cause them t strand(浅滩).
Fishing nets and gear(渔网渔具) - trawl nets are pulled by bats, static nets hang in the water; bth catch everyne and everything in their path and are a massive threat t blue whales.
Vessel strikes((船只撞击) – the number f bats n the cean is increasing all the time. Thugh they are large, blue whales are relatively slw and are vulnerable(脆弱的) t strikes by many kinds f vessels.
Irrespnsible whale watching – their size and fame make blue whales very ppular with whale watchers, but unfrtunately in sme parts f the wrld bats are getting t clse and interfering(扰乱) with their lives and natural behaviurs.
Passage 3 Hw China Prtects Giant Pandas - Pandas Nw NOT Endangered!
The gvernment has adpted a three-prnged apprach t prmte the survival f the giant panda as a wild animal species:
1. Habitat Prtectin - 13 Giant Panda Nature Reserve Areas
The mst imprtant wrk t save the giant panda is t prtect their habitat. Withut this, pandas culd nly survive in captivity(圈养).
T prtect giant panda's habitat, China gvernment has set 13 panda nature reserve areas. In the areas, farming fields have been left t grw back as frest. Trees and bamb have grwn well, and habitat are recvering. Als farming practices arund the frests have been reduced r separated frm the reserve areas.
Accrding t gvernment research in 2015, habitat fr giant pandas has grwn by abut 2,720 km2, (almst the area f Ysemite Natinal Park), cmpared t in 2003. At 25,770 km2, panda habitat is nw almst twice the size f Serengeti Natinal Park.
In the reserve areas, cnservatin staff live and wrk t rescue sick r starving pandas, and t stp smugglers(走私者) frm hunting giant pandas.
2. Captive Breeding - Research, Educatin, and Returning t Wild
In 1980s, much f the bamb n the Qinglai Muntains (the giant panda's main habitat area) died. Thus many giant pandas were starving, and were rescued t Chengdu Z.
In 1987, t separate the research wrk, the Chengdu Panda Center was established fr giant panda research. The riginal six starving giant pandas have bred mre than 150 pandas since then!
Unlike rdinary zs r attractins, panda research centers fcus n research and breeding. There are several panda centers arund Chengdu t breed(喂养) pandas, educate peple abut prtecting pandas, and t d research t help save this lvely species.
Sme research centers, like Dujiangyan Panda Valley, prepare the captive-bred pandas t be intrduced int the wild.
3. Laws and Stiff Penalties - Over 10 Years in Jail fr Hunting r Smuggling Giant Pandas
The giant panda is knwn as the 'natinal treasure' f China. It's ne f the "first class prtected species" accrding t China's Wild Animal Prtectin Law.
In the past, there was much hunting f giant pandas and smuggling(走私) f their pelts and bdy parts, s China's gvernment established laws and severe penalties t prtect giant pandas frm hunting and smuggling.
Passage 4 Why the Giant Panda was Endangered - Mainly Habitat Reductin
There are many reasns that caused giant pandas t be endangered. But the main reasn was disappearing habitat.
Habitat reductin (peple's lgging and farming practices)
Fd decreased (bamb dying ff)
Lw reprductivity (1 cub in 2 years) and lw survival rate fr panda cubs
Paching(偷猎) and hunting
1. Giant panda habitat was reduced gradually by farming and frestry. As China's ppulatin increased arund giant pandas' habitat the frest was cut dwn by hill farmers.
2. Because their habitat was decreasing, giant pandas had t mve up t higher muntain areas, which had few bamb species. When these species declined(下降), giant pandas didn't have enugh fd.
3. Giant pandas nly give birth t 1 r 2 cubs at a time. Hwever, especially in a tugher envirnment, they usually can't raise bth. They usually get pregnant(怀孕) every tw years at mst, but the decreases in their ppulatin made it increasingly difficult fr females t find a mate, s reprductivity(繁殖力) decreased.
4. After giant pandas were discvered by freigners in the late 1800s, mre were pached, and many mre were sht fr their fur. Thugh paching stpped after the 30s due t war and the new regime, lcals cntinued t hunt pandas fr fd and fur, and smuggling was again rampant(猖獗的) in the 80s.
The giant pandas culdn't adapt quickly enugh t their envirnmental changes and human persecutin, and were declared endangered in 1990.
