In 2015, Prfessr Wang Zhenyi, wh specializes in treating acute prmyelcytic leukemia (APL)(急性早幼粒细胞白血病), received a letter f thanks frm America. The writer f the letter was Mrs. Berna-dette Giandmenic, wh nce suffered frm APL but was cured with all-trans-retinic acid (ATRA)(全反式维甲酸), a treatment develped by Wang and his medical team.
Wrking at Ruijin Hspital, Wang has been devting his life t the treatment f leukemia. He received the cuntry's highest hnr in science and technlgy in 2010.
Brn in 1924 in Shanghai, Wang was inspired by a family friend's experience f pursuing a career in medicine as a child. His grandmther's death caused by typhid (伤寒) further strengthened his reslve t fight against diseases and rescue patients. With utstanding academic perfrmance, Wang became a dctr at Guangci Hspital, tday's Ruijin Hspital.
In 1978, a research paper frm Israeli experts gave Wang inspiratin n studying hw leukemia cells culd becme nrmal. His research didn't prgress as expected, thugh. In 1983, anther research paper shed light n his study. As the paper suggested, after being treated with 13-cis-retinic acid, white bld cells in patients with APL culd becme nrmal. Cnsidering the difficulties and high cst f prducing a drug made frm 13-cis-retinic acid, Wang's team decided t replace that ingredient with ATRA, and they finally verified its psitive effect after several mnths' experiments. In 1986, the drug was first adpted in treating a five-year-ld patient. It turned ut successful. After eight years f research, Wang's team eventually made the first breakthrugh in the battle against APL.
