Cmpser Gerge Lam has always liked writing music inspired by places.
“There are all these places in Chinatwn that are bth hidden and meaningful,” he says, stepping ut f the way f passers-by while leading a tur f the neighbrhd. “T uncver sme f thse hidden things in a city walk that yu might nt rdinarily ntice—I wndered, is there a piece in that?”
It turns ut that there’s nt just a piece, but a whle app. Lam interviewed five Chinese Americans frm arund the cuntry, asking them abut their experiences in Chinatwn, plus questins abut their ancestrs, their families and their memries. He then set the answers t music, the instruments drawing attentin t each persn’s distinct pattern f speech.
Lam created the app Family Assciatin. He calls the piece—the free app—Family Assciatin, after the imprtant flk grups that line the streets f the neighbrhd. Chinese family assciatins have been a bridge between new immigrants and mre established nes since the late 1800s. In Chinatwns acrss the cuntry, they’re a place t find resurces r an apartment, talk business r plitics, maybe get a COVID sht. But they’re als a place t scialize with peple wh share similar experiences.
Five f the neighbrhd’s assciatins are anchrs(锚点) fr the app. Visitrs use the build-in map t see lcatins f the assciatins. As they walk clser t ne f the family assciatin buildings, the fcus is n ne f the five ral histry participants, telling their stries. These stries aren’t abut the family assciatins; instead they’re abut the Chinese-American experience and hw they’ve felt supprted by Chinatwn.
But Lam thinks f the app itself as a kind f virtual family assciatin, cnnecting these Chinese-American vices with each ther, even if they’ve never met. And he hpes t cnnect with visitrs, t—at the end f the sundwalk, users are given a chance t recrd their wn memries.
    4. Hw did Lam deal with the interviewees’ answers?
    A. By setting them apart.B. By rganizing them in rder.
    C. By adding music t them.D. By spreading them natinwide.
    5. What are the participants’ stries abut?
    A. When they came t Chinatwns.
    B. What they experienced as Chinese Americans.
    C. Hw they’ve felt supprted frm China.
D Why they chse t stay in Chinatwns.
    6. What can we knw frm paragraph 4?
    A. Chinatwn plays a vital rle in Chinese Americans.
    B. Lam named his app after the street f the neighburhd.
    C. All Chinese Americans lived in Chinatwns when firstly reaching America.
    D. Chinese family assciatins have been a bridge f immigrants since 1800.
    7. What is Lam’s expectatin?
    A. T prmte his new app.B. T cnnect with Chinese cities.
    C. T recrd his wn memries.D. T assciate with visitrs.

When rbts appear t engage with peple and display human-like emtins, peple may think f them as capable f “thinking”, r acting n their wn beliefs and desires rather than their prgrams, accrding t the research published by the American Psychlgical Assciatin.
“The relatinship between human-like shape, human-like behavir and the tendency t attribute (把……归因于) independent thught and intentinal behavir t rbts is yet t be understd,” said study authr Agnieszka Wykwska, PhD, a principal investigatr at the Italian Institute f Technlgy. “As artificial intelligence increasingly becmes a part f ur lives, it is imprtant t understand hw interacting with a rbt that displays human-like behavirs might cause higher likelihd f attributin f intentinal agency t the rbt.”
Acrss three experiments invlving 119 participants, researchers examined hw individuals wuld see a human-like rbt, the iCub, after scializing with it and watching vides tgether. Befre and after interacting with the rbt, participants cmpleted a questinnaire that shwed them pictures f the rbt in different situatins and asked then t chse whether the rbt’s mtivatin in each situatin was mechanical r intentinal.
The researchers fund that participants wh watched vides with the human-like rbt were mre likely t rate the rbt’s actins as intentinal, rather than prgrammed, while thse wh nly interacted with the machine-like rbt were nt. This shws that mere expsure t a human-like rbt is nt enugh t make peple believe it is capable f thughts and emtins. It is human-like behavir that might be crucial fr being deemed as an intentinal agent.
Accrding t Wykwska, these findings shw that peple might be mre likely t believe artificial intelligence is capable f independent thught when it creates the impressin that it can behave just like humans. “This culd infrm the design f scial rbts f the future,” she said.
    8. What were participants asked t d in the experiment?
    A. Behave like a rbt.B. Cmplete a questinnaire.
    C. Shw pictures f the rbt.D. Watch the behavir f the iCub.
    9. What des the underlined wrd ”deemed“ in paragraph4 prbably mean?
    A. Believed.B. Persuaded.C. Perfrmed.D. Advcated.
    10. What culd the findings be applied t?
    A. Addressing sme technique prblems.
    B. Creating scial rbts just like humans.
    C. Guiding the design f future scial rbts.
    D. Develping artificial intelligence industry.
    11. What wuld be a suitable title fr the text?
    A. Human-like rbts can interact with humans
    B. Human-like rbts can behave just like humans
    C. Artificial intelligence has becme part f ur lives
    D. Human-like rbts may be believed t have mental states

A methd t transfrm a cmmnly thrwn-away plastic t a resin (树脂) used in 3D printing culd allw making better use f plastic waste, A team f Washingtn State University researchers develped a simple and efficient way t transfrm plyactic acid (PLA) (聚乳酸), a bi-based plastic used in prducts such as filament, plastic silverware and fd packaging t high-quality resin.

We believe this culd be a great pprtunity.”
Althugh it’s bi-based, PLA, which is categrized as a number 7 plastic, desn’t bread dwn easily. It can flat in fresh r salt water fr a year withut degrading (降解). It is als rarely recycled because like many plastics, when it’s melted dwn and re-frmed, it desn’t perfrm as well as the riginal versin and becmes less valuable.
“It’s bidegradable and cmpstable, but nce yu lk int it, it turns ut that it can take up t 100 years fr it t rt away in a landfill,” Chang said. “In reality, it still creates a lt f pllutin. We want t make sure that when we d start prducing PLA n the millin-tns scale, we will knw hw t deal with it.”
While the researchers fcused n PLA fr the study, they hpe t apply the wrk t plyethylene terephthalate (PET) (涤纶树脂), which is mre cmmn than PLA and has a similar chemical structure and present a bigger waste prblem. They have filed a temprary patent and are wrking further ptimize (优化) the prcess. The researchers ane als lking int ther applicatins fr the upcycling methd.
    12. What can the methd help d accrding t paragraph 1?
    A. Slve financial crisis.
    B Change waste int wealth.
    C. Cntrl plastic prductin
    D. Determine 3D printing skills
    13. What des Yu-Chung Chang think f the methd?
    A. PrmisingB. Unrealistic
    C. ImaginableD. Cmmn
    14. Which f the fllwing is a feature f number 7 plastics?
    A. Invaluable t recycleB. Easy t deal with
    C. Hard t break dwnD. Difficult t srt ut.
    15. What is the text mainly abut?
    A. Applicatins fr an upcycling methd.
    B. A better methd t break dwn plastic
