Wildlife bilgist Purnima Devi Barman remembers the first time she ever saw the nest f a greater adjutant strk(秃鹳)in a tree near her grandmther’s hme. Her grandmther wuld tell her stries abut birds and animals under the tree. The lve fr the natural wrld develped in thse years led Barman t devte her life t saving the endangered greater adjutant strk.
Knwn as the Hargila in Assam, the greater adjutant strk is the secnd-rarest strk in the wrld.Unlike pandas r lins, whse attractive appearances help gain widespread supprt fr their prtectin, these tall, bald, clumsy birds meet with bias in cnservatin campaigns.
“Hargilas als bear a reputatin f bringing bad luck,” says Barman.“What was the pint f writing my paper n them if there was n way f actually saving these birds? I had t start with changing the miscnceptin.”
Nt ne t shy away frm a challenge, Barman put her PhD n hld and set t wrk. “I started engaging with the wmen in the village. In ur experience, educating and securing the participatin f wmen ensures that the learning passes n t the next generatin,” Barman says.
Tday, arund 400 wmen have been trained t wrk n cnserving this rare bird. The grup’s activities include awareness-building in schls and plantatin drives in which 45,000 trees were planted t supprt the strk’s future ppulatins.
A key cmpnent allwing Barman t successfully integrate cnservatin effrts int the village cultural life was her idea f building related livelihds. Weaving(纺织)is a lng-standing craft in Assam, s Barman created a self-help grup emplying wmen t weave strk patterns n textiles. This innvative idea was highlighted at the UN Champin f the Earth Awards she wn in 2022.
Currently the number f greater adjutant nests in Assam’s Kamrup district has grwn frm 28 in 2010 t mre than 250. The nce unlucky strk is nw a symbl f cmmunity pride, its pictures appearing n bags, blankets and celebratin decratins.

When drnes(无人机)first became widely available arund 15 years ag, it wasn’t uncmmn t find tech peple painting dramatic pictures f hw they were sn ging t change the wrld. Hwever, if yu lk up int the largely empty sky, yu can see that hasn't happened yet.
Sure, drnes are useful fr taking aerial(空中的)phts, but we’re a lng way away frm aerial superhighways, packed with autnmus drnes carrying parcels at speeds that are near-impssible n the grund.
In 2016, Amazn annunced it had cmpleted its first ever aerial delivery. In a vide, we saw an Amazn “Prime Air” drne pick up a parcel and fly it acrss the cuntryside landing in the buyer’s garden, drpping the parcel, and then returning t its hme base. But Amazn still hasn’t cmpleted its secnd drne delivery. In fact, it has reprtedly dwnsized the drne prgramme.
S, will drne delivery ever be a thing? There are sme indicatins f a pssible drne delivery future nt in Britain, but in Africa. Because als since 2016, rural hspitals in Rwanda have been receiving regular shipments f medical supplies by drne thanks t a cmpany called Zipline. It surely has saved lives, thanks t the speed at which bld can be delivered in a cuntry with a prly develped rad netwrk. S culd we ever expect such a system here?
Unfrtunately there’s a big difference between rural Africa and thickly ppulated Britain. British hmes dn’t have large gardens where t land and nbdy wants lud large drnes cnstantly landing arund the neighburhd. Anther reality is that British cities may still have security and safety cncerns abut rutinely having drnes carrying stuff ver ur heads.
That’s why I wnder if the real drne future culd be crawling(爬) alng the grund. Fr a few years, “autnmus delivery rbts” with wheels have been walking n the pavements.S perhaps we’re nt s far away frm a drne delivery future, but the reality might be a little bit mre dwn t earth.
28. What can we learn frm the first tw paragraphs?
A. Drnes are widely used in daily life.
B. Drnes have made delivery efficient.
C. Drnes are designed t take aerial phts.
D. Drnes haven’t changed the wrld as expected.
29. Why des the authr mentin Zipline’s drne delivery?
A. T explain the prcess f drne delivery.
B. T stress the benefits brught by drne delivery.
C. T discuss the pssibility f a drne delivery future.
D. T shw its advantages ver Amazn’s drne delivery.
30. What is paragraph 5 mainly abut?
A. The security and safety cncerns abut drnes.
B. The ways that British peple react t drne delivery.
C. The differences between African cuntries and Britain.
D. The reasns why drne delivery isn’t suitable fr Britain.
31. What is the best title fr the text?
A. Pie in the Sky B. Drne Applicatin at Risk
C. Rbts n the Rad D. Aerial Delivery in Prgress
D
Screams f jy appear t be easier fr ur brains t cmprehend than screams f fear, a new study suggests. The results add a surprising new dimensin t scientists’ lng-held belief that ur brains are wired t quickly respnd t fearful screams as a survival mechanism.
The study lked at different scream types and hw listeners perceive them. The team asked participants t imagine “yu are being attacked by an armed stranger in darkness” and scream in fear, and t imagine “yur favrite team wins the Wrld Cup” and scream in jy. The participants prduced six emtinal screamspain, anger, fear, pleasure, sadness, and jy.
Separate sets f study participants were then required t tell the different scream types apart. In ne task, 33 vlunteers were asked t listen t screams and given three secnds t categrize them int ne f the six different screams. In anther task, 35 different vlunteers were presented with tw screams, ne at a time, and were asked t categrize the screams quickly while still trying t decide what type f scream it was, either alarming screams f pain, anger r fear r nn-alarming screams f pleasure, sadness r jy. It tk lnger fr participants t cmplete the task when it invlved fear and ther alarming screams, and thse screams were nt as easily recgnizable as nn-alarming screams like jy, the researchers reprt nline April 13 in PLOS Bilgy.
In a fllw-up experiment, 30 different vlunteers underwent fMRI(功能性磁共振成像)while listening t the screams. Less-alarming screams caused mre activity in the auditry(听觉的) and frntal brain regins than mre-alarming screams, the team fund.
The difference that turned up between alarming and nn-alarming screams prvides a “deeper understanding f this imprtant vcalizatin,” says NYU psychlgist David Peppel. The range f experiments, frm auditry analysis t fMRI, als prvides “a next stepping stne t develp a mre methdical and mechanistic understanding f hw we prcess screams.” he says.
32. What were the separate sets f study participants tasked with?
A. Imagining tw specific situatins. B. Prducing six emtinal screams.
C. Distinguishing different scream types. D. Listing alarming and nn-alarming screams.
33. What is the purpse f the IMRI experiment?
A. T cnfirm the result f the scream study.
B. T prve the benefit f less-alarming screams.
C. T stimulate activity in different brain regins.
D. T demnstrate the harm f mre-alarming screams.
34. What is the attitude f David Peppel tward the scream study?
A. Dubtful. B. Favurable. C. Unclear. D. Dissatisfied.
35. What is the main idea f the text?
A. Ways f scream cmmunicatin are diverse in humans.
B. Humans can tell alarming and nn-alarming screams apart.
C. Humans recgnize jyful screams faster than fearful screams.
D. Fearful screams act as a natural mechanism fr human survival.
