She tld Time cntributing editr Angelina Jlie in an interview that her science pursuits started early as a way t imprve scial cnditins. The drinking water crisis in Flint, Michigan, inspired her wrk t develp a way t detect pllutants and send thse results t a mbile phne, she said.
“I was like 10 when I tld my parents that I wanted t research carbn nantube sensr technlgy at the Denver Water quality research lab, and my mum was like, A what?” Ra tld Jlie. She said that wrk is ging t be in ur generatin’s hands pretty sn. “S if n ne else is gnna d it, I’m gnna d it.”
In a wrld where science is increasingly questined r challenged, Ra insisted that its pursuit is an act f kindness, the best way that a yunger generatin can better the wrld.

Anyne wanting t help the pr may like this idea—recycling aluminum(铝)cans in a different way, which is apparently als gd fr the envirnment. S yu're actually killing tw birds with ne stne. It ges withut saying that recycling aluminum cans can save resurces, energy, time and mney. Peple usually save and place aluminum cans in the dustbins, which are then cllected and taken away by cleaners, wh will finally recycle them in the recycling center. Here is hw t put this idea int actin. Take yur aluminum cans and place them in a plastic bag. Fr the dirty nes, rinse them ut first. Stre the bag f clean aluminum cans. Once yu cllect abut ne hundred cans r mre, take the cans t the recycle center yurself. There are abut eighteen aluminum cans in a pund. And yu can receive three t fur dllars fr ne hundred cans. Dnate yur three t fur dllars t the pr r any charity rganizatin f yur chice.
By nw, yu may wnder if yur few dllars have really made a difference t the pr. Cnsider this: Is there any individual r any specific event that is great enugh t change the wrld r decide the directin that histry takes? The answer is prbably n. What if there were a lt f peple wh wuld d the same thing? Histry shws nthing but the cllective will f the whle cmmunity. And that will surely be pwerful enugh t make a bigger difference.
G t yur cmmunity r yur schl and spread yur idea. Share yur idea and save yur aluminum cans with ther peple. One hundred peple can speak luder than ne. And the mney yu make by saving cans can be multiplied by ne hundred times. And if mre peple jin in the cause arund the wrld, an even larger difference can be made , and mre peple in need will enjy the benefits.

Research suggested that Wi-Fi can nw be used t estimate the vlume f liquids such as water, acid, alchl and ther chemicals fr explsive material. The study led by researchers at the Wireless Infrmatin Netwrk Labratry (WINLAB) in the Schl f Engineering shwed a wireless device with tw t three antennas (天线) that culd be fitted in existing Wi-Fi netwrks.
The detectin system analyzes what happens when wireless signals g thrugh and bunce ff bjects r materials. The apprach, which the paper states, wrks by separating the wireless interference (干扰) caused by tw factrs f bjects — the material and shape. “Mst dangerus bjects such as weapns are usually metal r liquid, which have significant interference,” researchers said.
When it was tested n a backpack, the accuracy rate tpped 95 percent. “But the accuracy drpped t abut 90 percent when bjects inside bags are wrapped. And the tech culd save lives if used in museums, stadiums, theme parks r schls,” the team said, nting its design can inspect bags r luggage withut being an expsure t privacy.
It uses channel state infrmatin (CS) that is readily available in lw-cst Wi-Fi devices. “This culd have a great impact n prtecting the public frm dangerus bjects,” said Yingying Chen, a c-authr f the study, “There’s a grwing need fr that nw. In large public areas, it’s hard t set up expensive screening equipment like what’s in airprts. Manpwer is always needed t check bags and we want t develp a methd t try t reduce manpwer. “
The peer-reviewed study, which recently wn a best paper award at the 2018 IEEE Cnference n Cmmunicatins and Netwrk Security, is nw published nline. “Future wrk will cntinue t fcus n imprving the accuracy f identifying bjects and imaging shapes and vlumes,” researchers said.

Hw is eating in space different frm eating n Earth?
If yu send astrnauts int space, yu have t send alng fd as well. But what d astrnauts eat, and hw d they eat it? Scientists take several factrs int cnsideratin as they plan meals fr space.
First, and pssibly mst imprtant, is nutritin (营养). 36 Prviding junk fd t eat, such as ptat chips, sdas, and pizza, wuld make the astrnauts unhealthy.
37 If the fd that has been prvided is distasteful, then the astrnauts may avid eating it. If yu’ve ever tried t cncentrate n smething imprtant while yur stmach desn’t feel well, yu’ll knw why the scientists in charge f a space missin want their astrnauts t eat regularly.
The lack f gravity in a spacecraft als determines what fds can r cannt be eaten in space. Meals must be packaged carefully s they wn’t spill(洒落/溢出) int the cabin (ne f the areas inside a spacecraft). Water r tiny bits f fd culd get inside a machine r electrnic device and damage it. 38 A lse knife buncing (弹起) arund inside the cabin wuld be dangerus.
39 The weight f every bject included in a spacecraft must be calculated (计算) in rder t ensure that there is enugh fuel and pwer t carry the craft safely int space and back hme again. 40 Mst fds are stred in plastic bags, and ften, the fds are dehydrated (使脱水). When an astrnaut is ready t eat, ht water is added t the meal and warm it up.
Despite all these requirements, much f the fd eaten in space is actually similar t what yu might eat n any given day.
A. Believe it r nt, they als have fresh fruits and vegetables.
B. Keeping astrnauts’ physical health is a tp task fr any space missin.
C. Fd packaging is made t be as light as pssible.
D. Taste is als imprtant.
E. Fr the same reasn, sharp knives and flks are never used n bard.
F. Nutritin and practicality(实用) are imprtant things t cnsider.
G. Finally, weight is an imprtant cncern.
