The Museum has fcused n Suth Asian art, especially Indian textiles. New Yrk-based cllectrs Ban and Jeevak Parpia have been invlved with the Museum since 2018, first as guest speakers n India’s glbal textile traditins, and then as experts t help survey and review selectins frm the Museum’s Annette Finnigan Cllectin.

A 16-year-ld frm Flrida is a tw-time state Gegraphy Bee winner. Nw a children’s bk authr, Kaylan is sharing his knwledge f the wrld with children acrss the state f Flrida.
Kaylan’s lve fr gegraphy started when he was abut three years ld. “I just had a lve fr lking at maps that we had when I was grwing up,” he tld me during a recent interview.
When Kaylan was in middle schl, he wn his state’s Gegraphy Bee. He then advanced t the natinal cmpetitin, placing in the tp 10 amng students in the United States.
“It helps us t understand ur wrld,” Kaylan said. “With that knwledge, s much can cme frm it.” Nw a junir in high schl, Kaylan said that having a basic understanding f ur wrld allws us t create pineering slutins t the challenges we face.
Althugh his cmpeting days are ver Kaylan hpes t inspire kids t learn mre abut gegraphy thrugh his new bk series. Called Kbe’s Wrld Adventure, the bks fllw the adventures f a by named Kbe wh travels the wrld with his family and learns new gegraphical facts alng the way.
The first bk is abut Kbe and his family explring the US. Yung readers will find many f the facts Kaylan has learned ver the years, alng with clrful illustratins (插图). The secnd bk f the six-bk series will be published in fall.

Mre than 100 years ag, the Island District area was under Tulare Lake, a large lake. At ne time, Tulare Lake was the largest freshwater lake west f the Mississippi River. But reservirs (水库) and watering systems fr agriculture caused it t disappear. Hwever, in very rainy years, farmland can still get cvered with water.
Experts say reservirs near the area will likely receive three times mre water than they can hld this year. That means fficials must increase the amunt f water they release (释放) frm the reservirs. But if t much water is released, the area might fld.

Humans spend abut ne third f their lives sleeping. But sme mammals (哺乳动物), like the nrthern elephant seal, survive with much less sleep.
Researchers in a new study described the unusual sleep pattern f these cean animals. They fund that when these mammals g t feed n trips that can last seven mnths, they sleep just tw hurs each day. Thse tw hurs f sleep are made up f shrt mments f rest lasting nly 10 minutes each as they dive deep t avid predatrs (捕食者). The nly ther mammals knwn t get s little sleep are African elephants.
The researchers placed a head cvering with sensrs (传感器) n the heads f the seals that they studied. The sensrs recrded sleep signals created by the seals’ brains and heart rate. The sensrs als recrded the animals’ lcatin and depth beneath the sea. Female seals g ut n lnger pen-cean trips while males nly feed in castal waters. Because f this, the researchers nly studied female seals.
During dives lasting abut 30 minutes, the seals went int a deep sleep called slw-wave sleep while keeping a cntrlled dwnward mvement. When they then experienced rapid-eye-mvement (REM) sleep, the seals fell int a turning pattern. Then, at the deepest pint f their sleeping dive—up t 377 meters deep—they wake up and swim back t the surface.
Terrie Williams is a scientist at the University f Califrnia at Santa Cruz wh helped write the study. She said, “It is remarkable that a wild animal will fall int deep, paralytic REM sleep when there are predatrs n the hunt.” She added that the seals slve this prblem by ging int deep sleep in the deep parts f the ceans where predatrs usually d nt hunt them.
