There is ht, and then there is ht! Extreme heat is a perid f high heat and humidity with temperatures abve 90 degrees Fahrenheit fr at least tw t three days. Extreme heat is respnsible fr the highest number f annual deaths amng all weather-related hazards (危害).
It’s nt yur imaginatin. Summers have been getting htter and htter with extreme heatwaves ccurring earlier and mre frequently. But why is this happening and can we better predict heatwaves in advance t give peple time t prepare?
“Climate change is here and it’s already been changing human behavir and causing significant influence in the sciety. As glbal temperatures rise, histrically excessive (过高的) temperatures are mre likely t ccur.” says Craig Ramseyer, an assistant prfessr wh studies climate mdeling in the department f gegraphy at Virginia Tech.
Ramseyer says heatwaves are the mst cncerning because f the lack f attentin they nrmally receive. “Hurricanes, trnades, and flash flds drive mre media attentin because f the natural attractin with the visual impact f thse types f hazards. Hwever, heat des nt tend t be as attractive and it becmes very difficult t cmmunicate the danger t the public,” said Ramseyer. “Arund the wrld, mre deaths ccur due t extreme heat than frm hurricanes, flding, and drught cmbined. It impacts the mst helpless f ur citizens wh d nt have enugh access t air cnditining, water, and ther imprtant resurces.”
Since the Earth is running warmer than it used t, Ramseyer says that when these heatwave-related weather patterns take place, it results in higher extreme temperatures than we used t experience 30 years ag.
“As a glbal cmmunity, we need t decrease carbn emissins as sn as pssible. We have rapidly develping technlgies that are ging t help advance the prcess, but the faster the better, there is n time t waste.”

Within the last decade, adult clring bks have surged in ppularity. The vast selectin available tday includes abstract images, mandalas (圆形图案) and yur belved characters ranging frm Marvel t Disney and anything in between. Themes aside, these bks have ften been best sellers and claim t prvide users with the pprtunity t cnnect with their inner artists and live happier lives.
But d they? I have heard friends, family, students and clients all share their persnal pleasure experiences with adult clring bks. And hnestly, I truly enjy my wn. Nevertheless,I recgnize that just because my persnal interpretatin tends t be eched in thse arund me des nt mean that an illustratin a day keeps the srrws away.
But what is it abut these bks that is s inviting? Is it the nstalgia (怀旧) fr the free clring we experienced as children? Perhaps it gives us a creative utlet t break ur rigid rutines? Or culd it be the mindfulness achieved as we discnnect frm chas and cnnect t the present?
A previus study prvided supprt fr adult clring bks. Curry and Kasser investigated a grup f undergraduates with anxiety, prvided them either with a blank page r a mandala, and instructed them t clr fr 20 minutes. Bth designs reduced anxiety, but the mandala was slightly mre effective.
In a recent study, experts utilized randmized cntrlled experiments t explre the differences between clring and a free drawing. In ne experiment, there were n differences in between an unguided clring grup and a free drawing. Hwever, in a secnd experiment, participants were assigned t either a guided r unguided mandala clring grup, and althugh n differences were nted in mindfulness, thse in a guided grup did shw a reductin in anxiety.
It seems as thugh adult clring bks are therapeutic (治疗的), but they are nt substitutes fr therapy. There may be benefits, but the persnal prcess may be different frm the grwth ne encunters in therapy. If yu d enjy this artistic activity and hpe t imprve yur mental health, perhaps yu will benefit frm seeking a creative practitiner r an art therapist t help yu alng the jurney.
8、What des the writer think f the adult clring bks in the first tw paragraphs?

    D. t take a break frm their dull everyday rutine
10、What can we learn frm the studies abut the reductin f anxiety?

    B. Bth studies indicate mandala wrks better than thers.
    C. The recent study prves the effectiveness f being guided.
    D. The previus study prves the effectiveness f being instructed.

    D. Adult clring bks can be used as a medical treatment in reducing anxiety.
The US Institute f Electrical and Electrnics Engineers (IEEE) recently asked scientists, lawyers, scial scientists and ther experts t cnsider sme f these ethical dimensin. T give tw examples: n privacy, as we let mre listening devices int ur hmes, hw d we prevent the data they cllect falling int the wrng hands thrugh hacking (黑客) r simply being sld between cmpanies withut us receiving any mney? Anther example: mixed reality, including virtual reality, will becme pervasive in the next few years. As we mve frm headsets t what the IEEE cmmittee describes as “mre delicate sensry enhancements” we will use technlgy t live in an illusry wrld in many aspects f ur lives. Hw d we balance the rights f the individual, cntrl ver ur virtual identity, and the need t live and interact n a face-t-face basis while being empwered t live rich lives in mixed reality?
There is, f curse, always a tensin between innvatin and regulatin. But it can ften seem that giant steps are taken in technlgy with minimal public discussin. Take the self-driving car: althugh it may be safer than human drivers and is likely t save mre than a millin lives a year wrldwide, it will als take jbs frm drivers, traffic plice, sign-makers, car-repair cmpanies, carmakers and mre. Is this a bargain we want t make? In taking that decisin, have we given thught t a car that knws everywhere we g, decides rutes, perhaps, based n paid advertisement frm shps alng the way—and listens and sees everything we d n bard? What will happen t that data and can it be kept safe?
Additinally, while sme wrry abut the uncmmn “trlley prblem” f whm the car shuld chse t hit in a strange accident—an ld lady r a mther and baby—perhaps the mre frequent issue will be hw we find ut what the algrithm (运算程序) was thinking at the time f an accident, because AIs (Artificial Intelligence) are self-learning and devise their wn strategies.
Similar cncerns are emerging ver the internet f things. Rbt vacuum-cleaners already plt cleaning cycles using cmputer-aided visin that, fr sme mdels, is relayed t their manufacturers. As mre things at hme becme cnnected, they will be hackable and the data they cllect saleable.
It’s time fr sme messy, demcratic discussins abut the future f AI.
12、Tw examples in paragraph 1 are used t________.
    A. shed sme light n hacking in ur mdern life
