Ammie Reddick frm East Kilbride, Lanarkshire, was nly 18 mnths ld when she had the accident that had scared her fr life. The curius child reached up t grab the wire f a ht kettle in the family kitchen and pured biling water ver her tiny infant frame.
Her mther Ruby turned rund and, seeing Ammie hrribly burnt, called an ambulance which rushed her daughter t a nearby hspital. Twenty percent f Ammie’s bdy had been burned and all f her burns were third-degree. There, using tissue taken frm unburned areas f Ammie’s bdy, dctrs perfrmed cmplex skin transplants t clse her wunds and cntrl her injuries, an peratin that tk abut six hurs. Over the next 16 years, Ammie underwent 12 mre peratins t repair her bdy.
When she started schl at Maxweltn Primary at age 4, ther pupils made cruel cmments r simply wuldn’t play with her. “I was the nly burned child in the street, the class and the schl,” she recalled, “sme children refused t becme friends because f that.”
Tday, aged 17, Ammie can nly ever remember being a burned persn with scars; pain is a permanent part f her bdy. She still has t have tw further skin transplants. Yet she is a cnfident, utging teenager wh ffers inspiratin and hpe t ther yung burns victims.
She is a member f the Scttish Burned Children’s Club, a charity set up last year.
