As f Sunday, Pal Alt High Schl and 19 ther student-led teams have been n an eight-day, 1, 400-mile trip fr the 30th annual Slar Car Challenge. Students frm acrss the cuntry built radwrthy slar cars and are driving them n freeways frm the starting pint in Frt Wrth, Texas, t Palmdale, Califrnia.
The Pal Alt team, made up f 13 junirs, spent six mnths building their car, which they’ve named “The Beast”. At the end f each schl day, students wuld meet at an ff-campus wrkshp t wrk. The wrk typically invlved late nights t prblem-slve.
The Beast has three wheels n an ATV system that the students fixed t an pen metal frame. Its flat rf is cmpletely cvered with slar panels. The car’s electric mtr can g up t 50 mph, but the team is driving it at abut 20 t 30 mph. The Slar Car Challenge is nt a race. The winning team is the ne that shws the mst strategy and efficiency by cvering the mst ttal miles.
“The wrld srt f caught up t us,” said Lehman Marks, funder f the Slar Car Challenge, and als a retired physics teacher. He started the challenge in 1993 t develp students’ interest in science and engineering. At that time, electric cars were rare. But they have since becme mre efficient and affrdable. “This is the first research study t shw that individual wild elephants have different willingness and abilities t slve prblems in rder t get fd,” said the study’s lead authr Sarah Jacbsn. “This is imprtant knwledge, because hw animals think and innvate may influence their ability t survive in envirnments that are rapidly changing due t human presence.”
Cnducted at the Salakpra Wildlife Sanctuary in Kanchanaburi, Thailand, the study used mtin-activated cameras t bserve 77 wild Asian elephants wh apprached and decided whether t attempt pening puzzle bxes with three different cmpartments （隔间） that cntained their favrite fruit—jackfruit.
