Like many peple, Stimpsn, wh is nearly 80, has nticed an alarming lss f wildlife in his lifetime. The cluds f swifts (雨燕) f his childhd have disappeared.
A lss f nesting sites is driving the decline f swifts in the UK, whse numbers are believed t have drpped by abut 57% in 22 years. These birds—which are nw n the UK’s red list—are site-specific, meaning each spring they cme back t the same spt after flying thusands f miles frm Africa. The prblem is that lts f ld barns and huses have been upgraded and repaired s that nesting sites have disappeared.
Thirteen years ag, n ne was making swift bxes, s Stimpsn started. “I’m nt a carpenter, I’m a salesman, but I thught I’d certainly give it a g,” he says. When he started, he culd make three a day, and nw n a really gd day he can make 30. “The gvernment and big wildlife rganizatins dn’t end up ding much t stp wildlife lss. We seem t have t many pen-pushers and nt enugh wrkers,” he says. “We culd d an awful lt mre than we’re ding.”
He believes lcal actin grups are much mre effective and has been wrking with a number f them. “The number f swift grups that have started up in the last five t eight years is quite staggering. And they seem t g frm strength t strength,” he says.
“Swifts are the ne thing where an individual can make a significant difference,” says Dick Newell, frm Actin fr Swifts, wh has 66 pairs f nesting swifts in his village f Landbeach in Cambridgeshire, 20 f them nesting n his huse.
Newell says develpers shuld put a swift brick in every new building, and he has been wrking with husebuilding cmpany Taylr Wimpey t make this happen. When I learned that ur cmmunity library was hsting a Bk Wrm Challenge, I gt excited. My granddaughter liked reading bks and I needed a little inspiratin t increase the quality f the bks I read, s I suggested we sign up. The gal was t read fifty bks in a year. I am an English teacher. This didn’t seem like much f a challenge. Then, I read the small print. There were fifty different types ranging frm histrical nnfictin t a bk with a red cver. Nt s easy after all.
The experience created a bnd with my granddaughter. We read a cuple f the same nvels, but mstly read different titles. Hwever, we had interesting cnversatins based n the similar themes in ur bks and we discussed the authrs’ writing styles, range f wrds, and ur favrites.
Initially, inspired by a stubbrn need t meet the gal, I frced myself t make time t visit the wrlds and characters f the nvels. In the past,excuses created reasns t prcrastinate (拖延), but nw I fund bks prvided a better alternative. When a new TV series was shwn fr the first time, I discvered bks brught greater jy and engagement. When the huse needed cleaning, I remembered it wuld be dirty again tmrrw. When the dg wanted attentin, I held her in ne hand and a bk in the ther. And when a task culd nt be pstpned, I turned n an audi bk.
After a year, reading became a habit. My life became mre satisfying as I grew intellectually. The realistic stries f life replaced the unrealistic dramas n the screen. Perhaps the greatest benefit I gt thrugh my increased reading was the impact it had n my writing. Reading imprved my vcabulary, mdeled unique styles, prvided new insights, and inspired new ideas and a desire t cpy ther authrs’ successes.
