The FIFA Wrld Cup Trphy (奖杯) is arguably ne f the mst icnic prizes in the sprting wrld. S far, tw different trphies have been used in the histry f the FIFA Wrld Cups.
The Jules Rimet Trphy was the first trphy awarded t the winners f the FIFA Wrld Cups. Initially, the ld trphy was riginally named “Victry”. Hwever, this trphy was renamed “the Jules Rimet Trphy” in 1946. This change was made t hnr frmer FIFA president Jules Rimet, wh vted t rganize the first FIFA Wrld Cup in 1930. Getting a package delivered is easy, but sending it back is nt. Repacking, printing labels and shipping it back up t the seller is an increasingly familiar experience fr nline shppers. In America 21% f nline rders, wrth sme $218, were returned in 2021, accrding t the Natinal Retail Federatin, up frm 18% in 2020. Fr clthing and shes it can reach arund 40%. It is a headache fr retailers.
The prblem has its rts in the birth f e-cmmerce. T cmpete with bricks-and-mrtar sellers and make cnsumers cmfrtable with rdering nline, e-cmmerce firms ffered free returns. Cnsumers came t expect it. The scale f returns has been amplified by the cvid-induced bm. In America nline-shpping nw makes up 15% f retail sales by value, up frm 10% at the start f 2019.
Returns culd grw as nervus cnsumers cut spending. In May, Bh, a British nline fashin firm, frecast lwer prfits fr the year, in part because f a higher return rate. In June, Ass, a rival, did the same. Overstcking, as retailers miscalculate changing demand, adds t the prblem. Steve Rp f gTRG, a startup which helps retailers srt returns, ntes an uptick in returns f discunted gds as cnsumers realise they dn’t want them.
Each step f the prcess is cstly. Retailers have t pay fr gds t be picked up r psted. Prcessing returns is labur-intensive, explains Zac Rgers wh wrked as a return s manager at Amazn and is nw at Clrad State University. The utbund system is highly autmated and streamlined; a return must be pened and smene has t decide what t d with it. “A wrker in an Amazn warehuse can pick 30 items in a minute, but a return can take ten minutes t prcess,” says Mr Rgers. Once prcessed, nly 5% f returned gds can be resld immediately by retailers. Mst g t liquidatrs at knck-dwn prices r are thrwn away. Retailers typically recup abut a third n a $50 item, says Optr, a firm that helps with returns.
Startups are getting in n the actin. Using artificial intelligence t help retailers decide what t d with the returned gds, taking int accunt factrs such as price trends in secnd-hand markets, is the brainchild f gTRG. Happy Returns, anther startup bught last year by PayPal, a fin-tech firm, helps with lgistics. It has 5,000 drp-ff pints fr return s acrss America, mstly in chain stres. The returns are aggregated and sent back t retailers all at nce, saving up t 40% f pstage csts, says David Sbie, the firm’s bss. Sme are experimenting with virtual reality (VR). Over half f items are returned because they are the wrng size. In June Walmart said it will buy Mamma, an augmented-reality (AR) startup that lets shppers virtually try n glasses. Walmart als ffers ways t try n clthes and arrange furniture in rms using AR. Amazn recently launched a VR feature that lets users try n shes. Retailers will nw try virtually anything t cut dwn n returns.
