Thugh the matters Ernaux describes in her bks are serius and even smetimes heavy, they are always written in plain language. Ernaux described her style as “flat writing” thrugh which she aims t tell her stries bjectively, “unshaped by flrid(过分装饰的) descriptin r verwhelming emtins.” nted Fx News.

Mst peple enjy variety. We like t eat different fds frm meal t meal. We wear different clthes. We like t try new activities and visit new places. We becme bred when there is little variety. Nevertheless, there’s ne place where we tend t dislike variety, and that’s in each ther. We ften feel uncmfrtable with peple wh practise different habits, r hld beliefs r values that we d nt share.
There are reasns fr this. When we are expsed t new and different things, ur brain wrks a bit harder than usual. When we’re learning, ur nerve cells require mre resurces, such as water, salt, and varius ther chemicals. This extra metablic(新陈代谢的) activity can feel unsettling and unpleasant. And it can feel wrse if ur nervus system is already under pressure, like in the midst f the pandemic.
This srt f variatin may be uncmfrtable fr individuals, but it’s critical t the survival f any species. If all finches(雀科鸣鸟) were identical, fr example, and their envirnment changed in sme significant, harmful ways, like an increase in the temperature r a decrease in water, all f them wuld be equally affected and the species might becme extinct. This insight int variatin cmes frm Charles Darwin, and it’s knwn as ppulatin thinking. Mst peple assciate Darwin with his evlutinary thery f natural selectin, but ppulatin thinking may be an even greater scientific achievement. The idea f “survival f the fittest” implies that individuals must vary. Sme are mre suited than thers fr a given envirnment, making it easier fr them t survive, grw, and reprduce. Variatin is therefre a prerequisite fr natural selectin t wrk.
Dealing with the vast variety f humankind can be demanding and even annying at times, but it’s a gd investment, srt f like exercise fr yur brain. When yu meet smene wh lks different r thinks differently frm yu, treat yur discmfrt as a cue t be curius and learn instead f a signal f a prblem. Dn’t hld the view that the ther persn shuld be silenced. Ultimately, this mindset can make yu mre flexible in adapting t challenging situatins, and mre adaptable t change.
28. Which f the fllwing might make peple feel uncmfrtable?
A. Having an adventure in the wild.
B. Taking a trip t a freign cuntry.
C. Sharing traveling experiences with thers.
D. Scializing with peple frm diverse cultures.
29. What des the secnd paragraph fcus n?
A. Peple’s unwillingness t deal with new things.
B. The bilgical explanatins fr peple’s discmfrt.
C. The significance f learning new things in ur life.
D. The rle f the nervus system in learning new things.
30. What des the underlined wrd “prerequisite” in Paragraph 3 prbably mean?
A. Requirement.B. Substitute.C. Mtivatin.D. Challenge.
31. What des the writer mainly want t cnvey?
A. Why we tend t chase and enjy variatin.
B. Hw we can benefit frm seeking variatin.
C. Hw we shuld treat the differences we find in thers.
D. Why we shuld get alng with peple different frm us.
D

In a new study detailed in IEEE Transactins n Haptics, she and her clleagues demnstrated a wearable sleeve that can simulate(模拟) human tuch and cnvey scial messages sent electrnically.
Salvat and her team measured hw 37 participants expressed scial messages in different situatins. In each test, ne persn wre a pressure-sensing device n an arm, and anther tuched it t respnd t six different scenes: attentin seeking, gratitude, happiness, calming, lve and sadness. After cllecting 661 tuch mvements, Salvat and her clleagues mapped the lcatin and pressure f each. Next, they used a machine-learning algrithm(算法) t select the mvements that were mst reliable part f each respnse. Finally, they prgrammed a wearable sleeve t simulate these mvements using eight built-in disks that vibrate when electrnically signaled. “The instant it received signals, I culd feel the tuch and identify its intended meaning.” One participant reprted.
Even with n training, the participants crrectly matched the simulated tuches t the six scenes 45 percent f the time. Fr cmparisn, a previus study fund participants culd match scenes fr tuches frm real human hands 55 percent f the time.
Gerling, a tuch researcher at Harvard wh was nt invlved in the study, said the inventin was really surprising. But the study was small and needs t cver far larger grups f peple t determine exactly which are the mst desirable respnses. Besides, he believes the sleeve surely will enjy great ppularity nce launched n the market.
32. What were participants asked t d during the study?
A. Pick up reliable respnses. B. Mdel n electrnic tuches.
C. Respnd t different situatins. D. Mark ut prgrammed mvements.

The term “grwth mindset” has becme smething f a buzzwrd(流行语) in ur life. Yu can find it everywhere yu lk — in the seminars f mtivatinal speakers, in the educatin curse descriptins, and in the missin statements f cmpanies. 36
One f the biggest miscnceptins abut grwth mindset is that it is the same thing as being pen-minded in yur beliefs. This is untrue. Being pen-minded in yur beliefs is ften the belief n what true grwth mindset is, but this is actually called “false grwth mindset” in the research cmmunity. 37 What this means is that they have a fixed belief n their intelligence level, which is exactly what a fixed mindset is. They believe that they are grwing, when in reality they are nt.
Being pen-minded t ther peple’s beliefs and new things is great, but it des nt mean that yu are actually learning anything. Furthermre, there is n way t ever have a truly cmplete grwth mindset. 38 It is imprtant that yu accept this and embrace it, while still desiring t experience grwth anyway. This is the nly way yu can truly fster a grwth mindset .
39 Unprductive effrts that are merely dne fr the reward r utcme are nt cnsidered t be grwth mindset. True grwth mindset has nthing t d with reward r utcme. Rather, it is based entirely n the learning and grwing prcess itself. When yu are invested in a grwth mindset, yu are invested in the prcess regardless f the utcme.
40 Yu cannt simply “have” a grwth mindset. Yu have t want ne, and invest in having ne. Understanding the truth abut grwth mindset will enable yu t understand exactly hw this quality can assist yu in life.
A. Mindset is a lt harder than “just d it”.
B. It is virtually impssible, as we are all fixed in sme way r anther.
C. Anther false belief is that grwth mindset is abut rewarded effrts.
D. A secnd miscnceptin is that peple’s mtivatin cmes frm the prcess.
E. But despite its ppularity, sme peple dn’t understand what it actually means.
F. This is essentially peple wh have an “I already have it, and I always have” attitude.
G. Grwth mindset assists peple in having greater results frm what they set ut t accmplish.
