Befre he sailed rund the wrld alne, Francis Chichester had already surprised his friends several times. He had tried t fly rund the wrld but failed. That was in 1931.
The years passed. He gave up flying and began sailing. He enjyed it greatly. Chichester was already 58 years ld when he wn the first sl transatlantic sailing race. His ld dream f ging rund the wrld came back, but this time he wuld sail. His friends and dctrs did nt think he culd d it, as he had lung cancer. But Chichester was determined t carry ut his plan. In August 1966, at the age f nearly 65, an age when many men retire, he began the greatest vyage f his life.
Chichester cvered 14,100 miles befre stpping in Sydney, Australia. This was mre than twice the distance anyne had previusly traveled alne. He arrived in Australia n 12 December, just 107 days ut frm England. He received a warm welcme frm the Australians and frm his family wh had flwn there t meet him. On shre, Chichester culd nt walk withut help. Everybdy said the same thing: he had dne enugh; he must nt g any further. But he did nt listen.
After resting in Sydney fr a few weeks, Chichester set ff nce mre in spite f his friends' attempts t dissuade him. The secnd half f his vyage was by far the mre dangerus part, during which he sailed rund the treacherus Cape Hrn.After succeeding in sailing rund Cape Hrn, Chichester sent the fllwing radi message t Lndn: “I feel as if I had wakened frm a nightmare. Wild hrses culd nt drag me dwn t Cape Hrn and that sinister Suthern Ocean again.”
Just befre 9 'clck n Sunday evening 28 May 1967, he arrived back in England, where a quarter f a millin peple were waiting t welcme him. Queen Elizabeth Ⅱ knighted(授予爵士称号) him with the very swrd that Queen Elizabeth Ⅰ had used almst 400 years earlier t knight Sir Francis Drake after he had sailed rund the wrld fr the first time. The whle vyage frm England and back had cvered 28,500 miles. It had taken him nine mnths, f which the sailing time was 226 days. He had dne what he wanted t accmplish.

It's already challenging enugh fr envirnmentalists t keep beaches clear f washed-up trash and plastic debris(残骸), but the mst difficult prblem lies in cleaning up all f the millins f tiny micrplastics that are impssible t pick up and separate frm the sand.
Frtunately, a grup f engineering students succeeded in develping a massive new vacuum(真空) cleaner that can cllect micrplastics withut remving any f the sand frm the beach. The 12 Canadian students frm the University f Sherbrke in Quebec built their Hla One plastic vacuum cleaner as a class prject.
“We did sme research and we realized there was n machine arund the wrld t d this kind f jb,” Hla One c-funder Sam Duval tld Hawaii Public Radi. “S we tld each ther,‘We will invent it,’ and we did it.”
As a means f testing their machine's efficiency, they recently used it n the sands f Hawaii's Kamil Beach, which is als ntrius fr being ne f the dirtiest beaches in the wrld. Thugh their first prttype(原型)experienced a number f technical issues, the students managed t fix the prblems and tidy up the beach.
Using a handheld tube, the machine sucks(吸入)up plastic and sand and dumps them all int a massive water tank. Since rcks and sand are heavier than plastic, they sink t the bttm f the tank s they can be dumped back nt the beach. The plastic, n the ther hand, flats t the tp f the tank.
Accrding t Hawaii Public Radi, the team left the Hla One vacuum n the island as a dnatin t the state department. They are nw researching the eclgical effects f the vacuum n the beach while they are searching fr funding and spnsrships(赞助款)t prduce mre Hla One vacuums.

It seems we can't get ff the planet fast enugh. Tw thirds f NASA's mney is spent n manned space explratin, and that number will grw with the USA's decisin t send a man t Mars in 2037. We've seen all that is t see n Earth, right? Wrng. The final place is here, under the surface f the sea.
Heading dwn int the cean, human limits are quickly reached. At 200 metres, the water is as black as a mnless night. Mst nuclear submarines wuld implde (内爆) befre they reach 1 km dwn. At 3 km—still less than the average depth f the cean—there's a gd chance that yu'll discver a new species. The deepest-diving whales g n further. At the very bttm, abut 11 km dwn, lies the Challenger Deep, the deepest part f the Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean. Eighteen humans have walked n the Mn, but nly three have seen the deep with their wn eyes.
Yet things live dwn there. Big things. A very lud sund was nce heard and scientists suggested that it was prduced by an animal bigger than a blue whale, the largest creature knwn n the planet.
In the late 1990s, a deep-water submarine was drpped in the Suthern Ocean, and passing 4,000 metres, it discvered smething huge passing under it. Surprised? Dn't be. The cean cvers 70% f the planet's surface and we've studied less than 5% f it. We knw mre abut the dark side f the Mn than abut the bttm f the sea.
One reasn why we explre space is t find evidence f ther life frms. The search fr life utside f Earth is imprtant, but rbts can lk under the dry rcks f Mars better than humans. They're abslutely imprtant fr ding cean research t, but they can't lk under the sea. The cst f explratin is rising, but the results wuld benefit all ur lives. Understanding the ceans will help us find new surces f fd, drugs and energy.
Perhaps nw it's time t begin a new perid f sea explratin. Manned space explratin is science fictin. The adventure f the deep sea is science fact.
8.What d the examples in Paragraph 2 suggest?

10.What des the authr think f the discvery in the Suthern Ocean?
A.It's surprising.
B.It's n wnder.
C.It's wrrying.
D.It's n success.
11.What des the authr want t tell us?
A.Space explratin is f little value.
B.We spend t much mney n space travel.
C.Humans' success lies in hw much they explre the sea.
D.The cean is the place where we shuld make ur effrts.

I dn't think I can recall a time when I wasn't aware f the beauty f the cean. Grwing up in Australia, I had the gd frtune t have the sea at my side. The first time I went t Half Mn Bay, I suddenly had the feeling f nt being able t feel the grund with my feet anymre.
Fr my 10th birthday, my sister and I were taken ut t the Great Barrier Reef. There were fish in different clrs, caves and layers f cral. They made such an impressin n me. When I learned that nly 1 percent f Australia's Cral Sea was prtected,I was shcked. Australian marine life is particularly imprtant because the reefs have mre marine species than thse f any ther cuntry n earth. But sadly, nly 45% f the wrld's reefs are cnsidered healthy.
This statistic is depressing, s it's imprtant fr us t d everything t prtect them. The hpe that the Cral Sea remains a cmplete ecsystem has led me t take actin. I've becme invlved with the Prtect Our Cral Sea activity, which aims t create the largest marine park in the wrld. It wuld serve as a place where the cean's species will all have a safe place frever.
Tgether,Angus and I created a little vide and we hpe it will inspire peple t be a part f the mvement. Angus als shared many beautiful childhd memries f the cean as a yung by,wh grew up sailing, admiring the beauty f the cean, and trying t find the secrets f underwater marine species.

B.It is intended t prevent mre marine species frm being endangered.
C.It is intended t set up a large nature reserve fr reefs.
D.It is intended t raise mre teenagers' envirnmental awareness.
14.Why did Angus and the authr create a little vide?
A.T urge mre peple t take actin t prtect the marine species.
B.T inspire mre peple t explre the secret f the cean.
C.T share their childhd experiences abut the cean.
D.T bring back pleasant memries f marine species.
15.What can be learned abut the authr frm the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1?

I realized that a stne r seashell we find in the cean had a wnderful clr that makes us pick it up. But when it dries up ne day, r we dn't find what we have kept lvely anymre, what can we d then? 19 At the same time, I als realized that natural things were nice in their natural envirnment. If everybdy picked up every shell frm the cean, and left garbage there, the beach wuld becme smething nt s nice very shrtly.
20 I wuld just “brrw” seashells r little stnes frm the cean, and bring them back after a while, since the beauty f shells des s much gd t me.
I cntrl the quantity and keep it t the smallest number. S if yu've seen a lady picking up garbage and thrwing shells back int the cean frm a bx r a bag n a beautiful sunny day, dn't feel strange. It was prbably me.

S she acquired knwledge and 25 fr years t seek her dream in sailing. Having merely ptates and beans every day fr eight years, she 26 culd affrd the right equipment. By reaching such 27 gals and asking technical questins abut 28 , MacArthur felt as thugh she was getting 29 t her ambitin.
“The impssible culd be pssible and 30 high is nt necessarily such a crazy thing t d,” she said. And it seems that MacArthur's 31 t becme a sailr went beynd her expectatins. At the age f 24, she started t 32 media attentin after winning the secnd place in the Vendée Glbe, a single-handed nn-stp yacht (帆船)race that went arund the wrld.
Fur years later, MacArthur chse t sail fr 71 days and 14 hurs, 33 mre than 26,000 miles. This led her t set a new recrd. 34 this recrd has been surpassed (超过),MacArthur is still cnsidered as Britain's mst successful ffshre racer.

Have yu expressed yur gratitude t her?” Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shck;she remembered her mther's familiar face and weathered (饱经风霜的)hands. “Why didn't I think f that? A bwl f ndles frm a stranger made me feel indebted(感激的). Why haven't I thanked my mum fr what she has dne fr me?” On the way hme, Jenny made up her mind t make an aplgy t her mther fr her rudeness as sn as she arrived hme.
