The 22-year-ld started his athletic career with gymnastics and diving. Hwever, with his parents’ supprt, he started ice skating, and thankfully his sprting past lent itself nicely t the sprt. The nly prblem was the cst and the lack f facilities. As Carrill’s father jkingly explains, Mexicans nrmally assciate ice with smething yu put in a drink and nt with the sprt. S his sn is actually ne f the very few yung men ice skating in their hme cuntry.
In fact, in 2013, while Carrill was just a teen, his usual ice rink clsed and he had nwhere t practice. In the end he had t mve t Len, in Guanajuat, and lived with his cach, Gregri Nunez, s he culd still practice. The mve was hard n the whle family, bth emtinally and financially, and what was meant t be just a few mnths away frm hme turned ut t be nine years — nearly half f Carrill’s life.
The ice skating her’s stry isn’t abut medals: it’s abut determinatin and effrt. Lking at the Olympian’s face, yu can see he’s mre than happy. He wants t shw what anyne can achieve, even if yu dn’t have state-f-the-art equipment.
Lking at him glide alng the ice rink with ease, it’s hard t imagine that he trained n a small ice rink with substandard ice, and used a run-dwn skatepark t imagine perfrming in frnt f the judges. Time t lad up sme ppular games: new research indicates pigs pssess the mental capability t play vide games. The study, published in Frntiers in Psychlgy, tested the ability f fur pigs (Hamlet, Omelette, Ebny and Ivry) t play a simple jystick game with their nses, mving a cursr (光标) t fur targets n the screen. Althugh the animals did nt demnstrate the skills t win a rund any time, they did shw an understanding f sme elementary games. Perfrming well abve chance, the pigs appeared t recgnize the mvement f the cursr was cntrlled by the jystick. The fact that they did s well despite a lack f flexible fingers is “extrardinary”, accrding t the researchers.
“It is n small achievement fr an animal t grasp the cncept that the behaviur they are perfrming is having an effect elsewhere. That pigs can d this t any degree shuld give us pause as t what else they are capable f learning and hw such learning may impact them.” said Purdue University’s Dr Candace Crney, the study’s lead authr.
Researchers als nted that while the pigs culd be taught t play the game using fd as psitive mtivatin, they als respnded well t scial interactin. In fact, when the game was made mre challenging and the pigs became unwilling t participate in it, “nly ral encuragement by the experimenter” wuld see training cntinue.
These findings are the latest t highlight the intelligence f pigs. Nt nly have they been shwn t use mirrrs t find hidden fd, but studies have als demnstrated hw pigs can be taught t “cme” and “sit” after ral cmmands.
As with any sentient (有感觉力的) beings, hw we interact with pigs and what we d t them impacts and matters t them. We therefre have a mral duty t understand hw pigs acquire infrmatin, and what they are capable f learning and remembering, because it ultimately ffers the ptential fr hw they understand their interactins with us and their envirnments.
28. What can be learned frm Paragraph 1?
A. The pigs smetimes wn the vide games.

A. Their being driven by fd.B. Their using mirrrs t find hidden fd.
C. Their being inspired by human wrds.D. Their being mtivated by challenges.
31. Which f the fllwing culd be the best title?
A. Smart pigs: gd playersB. Flexible nses: fun games

Since the first factries began manufacturing plyester (聚酯) in the 1950s, humans have prduced abut 9. 1 billin tns f plastic. And abut 12 percent has been burnt, releasing harmful gases int the air. Mst f the rest has ended up in landfills and in the natural envirnment. Plastic inhabits the ceans, cities and natinal parks, in large r tiny pieces.
Carbis is amng the cmpanies that are attempting t cmmercialize a type f chemical recycling, which breaks dwn plymers int their fundamental mleculars, called mnmers (单体). Thse mnmers can then be recmbined int plymers that are as gd as new.
But sme experts warn that chemical recycling may face many f the same issues that already plague the recycling industry, including cmpetitin frm cheap plastics made frm the raw materials. Fr the past several years, Carbis has been imprving a methd that uses an enzyme (酶) fund in a micrrganism t cnvert plyethylene terephthalate (PET), a cmmn ingredient in plastic bttles, int its mnmers.
Enzymatic recycling’s prmise isn’t limited t PET: the apprach can be applied t ther plastics. In early experiments, it tk weeks fr enzymes t prcess just a part f a batch f PET. In 2020, Alain Marty, chief science fficer at Carbis, annunced they’d develped an enzyme that culd stand warmer temperatures and change nearly an entire batch f PET int mnmers in a matter f hurs.
Mst PET prduced glbally is used fr textile fibers, which, because they ften cntain mixed materials, are rarely recycled. Mats Linder, leader f Stena Recycling in Sweden, said he’d like t see recycling technlgies fcus n these and ther parts f the recycling industry where cnventinal recycling is cming up shrt.
As it happens, Carbis is wrking t d just that. Gregg Beckham, a senir research fellw at the Natinal Renewable Energy Labratry, believes the glbal plastic prblem will call fr a diverse mix f technlgical slutins. He thinks enzymatic recycling and ther recycling technlgies are advancing rapidly, and he’s ptimistic that they’ll have a rle t play.
32. What can be inferred frm the first paragraph?
A. Plyester has been made fr a century.B. Mst plastic is nt recycled.
C. Peple shuld stp using plastic.D. Mst plastic is buried in landfills.
33. What des the underlined wrd “plague” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Truble.B. Inspire.C. Influence.D. Determine.

B. Enzymatic recycling can nly be used t break dwn PET.

D. Great prgress has been made in enzymatic recycling.
35. What pinin des Gregg Beckham mst prbably hld?
