    Students at Summit Elementary Schl in Butler,Pennsylvania are grwing mre than their minds.Under the guidance f their teacher Angela Eyth,they’ve created a prductive garden.“The kids are in charge f everything,” Eyth says.
    Eyth and her students launched the gardening prject in 2020 after the teacher attended a cnference n hw t include lessns abut farming in the classrm.Then came the garden.With 16 acres f schl district-wned land arund their building,there was plenty f rm.
    The prject is nw tw years ld,and ges beynd planting and grwing:Eyth and her fellw educatrs structure lessns in science,math and mre arund their garden.
    “When we grew cabbages my students nticed smething was eating the leaves,” Eyth recalls.“This led t an investigatin n figuring ut what was eating it and hw t stp it:the kids analyzed the evidence they fund and acted as engineers in creating ways t keep insects ut f the cabbage beds.In the 4th grade,we let the students utside t estimate the number f bean pds (豆荚) they find.” Eyth cntinues,“Peple think gardening shuld be separate frm cre subjects but it’s far frm the truth.The kids’ curisity keeps it rlling.”

    Birds,whether alne r in flcks,are a menace t flying planes.When a plane strikes a bird,damage will be caused—ccasinally with disastrus results.The plane that famusly landed n the Hudsn River in 2009,fr example,was damaged by birds entering the plane’s engines accidentally,causing their failure.
    Scientists have been wrking n ways t prevent birds frm entering flight spaces but thus far have met with nly partial success.Currently drnes(无人机) are used t scare birds away,just as trained falcns and systems that make sunds f birds in great pain.
    In this new effrt,the researchers tk a new apprach—they designed a remte-cntrlled flying rbt just like a peregrine falcn that catches and kills ther birds,which therefre try t avid it.
    The result is the RbtFalcn,which is painted t lk like a real peregrine falcn and is pwered by an internal engine.T capably cpy the flying patterns f a falcn,the researchers studied the flying characteristics f real birds and then added features t their rbt bird that wuld allw it t fly in similar ways.
