A cuple, Libby Green and Marcel Gnauk, like travelling and sharing their travel experiences nline has becme part f their rutine.
Libby is skilled at using a camera. But they struggled t find a fcus. Then, in Cambdia, Libby filmed sme birds taking flight that she wanted t use in a film. But she culdn’t capture (捕获) the sund f their wing beats.
They lked n the Internet, searching sund libraries, but culdn’t find anything apprpriate. S, Marcel tk a $100 audi recrder, and went searching fr the missing sund t recrd. He didn’t find any birds, but he did manage t change their future with it.
Marcel turned the recrder n in a small cnstructin zne, listening thrugh a cheap set f headphnes. He was awed nt just by the sunds f cnstructin, but a man’s singing, and mtrcycles passing by.
“It was just like the sund was falling int my head frm all sides,” says Marcel. “Everything became alive, and frm that day until nw I have never stpped recrding.”
In the six years since that first recrding, the cuple have captured sunds in mre than 25 cuntries.
Libby shts and edits their YuTube vides, and manages their website. Marcel des mst f the sund recrding and editing, as well as the scial media pstings. Thrugh their website, they ffer 500 free sund libraries. Of these, 145 are free t dwnlad.

San Francisc’s public garbage cans have lng utlived their lifespan (寿命) and need t be replaced. Hwever, the current design is nt enugh fr the city’s large ppulatin and the increasing number f turists. The garbage cans als get messed up by the hmeless. T address the issues, in 2018, San Francisc Public Wrks fficials set ut in search f a perfect garbage can. This prved harder than they had thught.
The fficials had a few criteria in mind. The ideal garbage can had t be durable (耐用的) and easy t empty. The fur-year explratin ended n July 18, 2022, with three selectins. They include the “Slim Silhuette” “Salt & Pepper” and “Sft Square”. Since nne f them meet all the required criteria, the fficials have turned t the city’s residents fr help.
The custmized cans and three new ff-the-shelf ptins have been placed acrss San Francisc fr a 60-day trial. Residents can scan the QR cdes n the cans and prvide pinins n their use experience. A lcatin map f each ptin is included at the end f the survey. The mst ppular garbage can will be publicized after the trial ends in mid-September.
The time spent n the prject and the cst f the three custmized garbage cans — which ranged between $11,000 t $20,900 a piece — have drawn criticism frm the city’s retired fficial Matt Haney.

Later, Russ and his team set ut t investigate if the sund happened by chance r was a way t frighten enemies. The researchers recrded the buzzing cries f the bats when they were being caught. They then cmpared the sunds t thse f tw wasps and tw bees. The similarities in the sunds cnvinced the scientists the bats were cpying the insects t scare ff enemies.
Russ and his team tested their thery n eight wls (猫头鹰). Half f them were wild, while the rest were raised at hme. When the scientists played nrmal bat sunds, all the wls flew tward the speaker in search f fd. Hwever, the birds instantly flew away when expsed t the bat’s bee-like buzzing.
The researchers bserved that the wild birds shwed greater fear than the nes brught up at hme. This indicated that the wls had previusly been hurt by the insects and knew t clear away when they heard the buzzing.
But behaviral eclgist Matthew Bulbert isn’t cnvinced this is a case f cpying. He argues that wls meet stinging (蜇人的) insects and bats in different circumstances — the frmer, when they are resting, and the latter, when they are actively hunting fr fd.
