This week recrd-breaking temperatures f mre than 40’C were frecast in Britain. Schls clsed and hspitals cancelled rutine appintments. The Ryal Air Frce had t rearrange flights frm its biggest air base after the runway melted. In mainland Eurpe, things were bleaker still. After weeks f drught, a heatwave sparked wildfires in France, Greece, Prtugal and Spain. Parts f America are struggling thrugh ne f their httest summers ever. And many places f eastern and suthern China have seen unusually high temperatures in recent weeks.
Why are all f these places suffering extreme heat at the same time? Climate change has made heatwaves mre frequent. Very ht temperatures that were nce rare ccur mre frequently and heatwaves that were nce impssible cme t pass. The temperatures in Britain this week fit int the secnd categry(II),says Richard Betts, a climate researcher with the British Met Office. Similarly, mdelling carried ut by the Wrld Weather Attributin grup, a research calitin, fund that last year’s unprecedented heatwave in the Pacific Nrthwest wuld have been ”virtually impssible“ withut climate change. New recrds will be set as lng as humans cntinue t burn fssil fuels and destry carbn-string ecsystems.
Whatever the cause, the cnsequences are disastrus. Heatwaves kill peple and wrsen existing health cnditins. Heatwaves can cause crps t suffer, as happened this spring in India. In three nrthern states, yields prbably fell by between 10%-35%. If several “breadbasket” arc as are affected there will be wrldwide shrtages, pushing up prices. Other systems are at risk, t. Heat can disrupt everything frm manufacturing t transprt. Last weak factries in Zhejiang prvince in China were frced t ratin(定量供应)pwer t ensure enugh supply fr air-cnditiners in nearby hmes. Heatwaves ften stretch energy grids(电网)t breaking pint. In places where electricity is mved acrss brders, a stream f pwer frm smewhere nt affected can help stabilize the grid. But simultaneus(同时的)heatwaves make that cmplicated. In an intercnnected wrld, regins rely n each ther t cpe with disaster. Which becmes much harder when the disasters arc happening in many places at nce.

Earlier this mnth, British supermarket chain Mrrisns annunced that it wuld be remving “use by” dates n mst f its milk. The idea behind this is t discurage peple frm thrwing milk away based n a date, rather than sniffing (闻) and lking at it t determine whether it’s still safe fr cnsumptin.
The fact is that significant amunts f fd get wasted every year by peple blindly fllwing expiratin dates, rather than their senses. What makes matters wrse is that mst dates dn’t mean much, anyway. They’re assigned smewhat randmly by fd manufacturers that are nt held t any regulatry standards fr what determines a safe date nr what expertise (专门知识) is required t make such a judgment call—s it makes sense that they’d be t cautius.
What I find amusing, hwever, is that many peple seem t be hrrified by this appraching absence f “use by” dates.
In fact, I never lk at expiratin dates when I shp. T me, it’s as if they dn’t exist. T be clear, I am nt an absent-minded shpper. I pay clse attentin t bth packaging and price. Despite having a full cart at checkut, I culd tell yu the exact price f every item in it. Any time I see a clearance rack (清仓货架) at the stre, that’s usually where I g first because it’s exactly the stuff I want t buy—the cheaper, the better! If there’s any heavily discunted prduct that I’d nrmally use, I will certainly take it. Often, I’ll mentally adjust my weekly menu plan n the spt, based n what I find.
The handful f times I have lked at expiratin dates have been fr shrt-lived items like prepackaged salad greens. What I’ve fund, hwever, is that the dates mean little. Even a package that claims t be fresh can still have rtten yellw leaves at the bttm, which turns me ff. Therefre, the expiratin date means next t nthing, but my visual assessment, cmbined with my intentin fr when I plan t eat it, is far mre useful.
Fd is yur friend. Fd is nt ut t kill yu!
12、Why will Mrrisns remve “use by” dates n mst f its milk?
A.T reduce fd waste.
B.T imprve custmers’ senses.
C.T meet the regulatry standards.
D.T be cautius abut fd quality.

B.She cares mre abut the price.
C.She always avids buying discunted prducts.

14、Why des the authr give the example f “prepackaged salad greens”?

B.T intrduce her cking habit.
