The riginal cncept f building Ft Print Farms was simple. When Ayers-Ellitt returned t her hmetwn after graduatin, she didn't have t lk any further than her state's alarming health statistics t find a missin. Everywhere she turned, there were reprts f high bld pressure, diabetes, besity and heart disease. “The prblem was already identified,” explains Ayers-Ellitt. “T many Mississippians were seriusly unhealthy and it didn't take research t see that. And many f the state's greatest health challenges culd directly result frm pr diet.”
These days, Ft Print Farms, which started with a few raised beds f herbs and vegetables, is making fresh, naturally grwn fd. “When speaking f the key t my success, the cp mdel wrks because we share the wrk and rewards,” ntes Ayers-Ellitt. “A perfect example is the Wingfield High Schl ftball team. T earn the mney fr equipment and ther items, players cmmitted t wrking five hurs a week n the farm, and by the end f the summer they prduced 1,000 melns and the prfits frm their sales helped t buy weights, T-shirts, sweat suits and pregame meals.
