China is fndly remembering ne f its mst famus radi vices, a man whse vivid strytelling was a cmfrt t millins f peple, frm cmmuters stuck in traffic t restless teens struggling t sleep. Shan Tianfang, was a leading perfrmer f the traditinal Chinese art frm pingshu, which translates as “strytelling”.
Pingshu dates frm the Sng Dynasty (AD960-1279) when perfrmers wuld entertain villagers by telling stries in a particularly emtive style. It remains particularly ppular in nrth-eastern China. Perfrmers wear traditinal dress and use very basic prps — ften a flded fan and a gavel. Pingshu is smetimes perfrmed in tea huses and small theatres, but many Chinese assciate the art frm with radi. And in a cuntry where sleeping prblems are cmmnplace, pingshu is still ppular as a way f helping peple t wind dwn at bedtime.
Shan Tianfang was brn in 1934 in Yingku, in nrth-eastern Lianing prvince. His family intrduced him t flk arts frm a yung age and he began learning pingshu when he was 19. He became knwn in Lianing fr his wrk n stage and in lcal teahuses during the 1950s and 1960s, and perfrmed in an art trupe arund the regin. Frm 1966-1976, Shan, alng with ther pingshu perfrmers like Yuan Kucheng, was frced t stp wrk. During the 1980s.Shan made the transitin (转型) t state-run radi, and his captivating strytelling became cmfrt listening fr peple acrss the cuntry. By the 1990s, Shan had becme a well-knwn face n state TV, even perfrming in the annual Spring Festival Gala shw. He has died aged 84 fllwing a lng illness.
Shan perfrmed ver 12,000 stries n TV and radi. His stries attracted peple f all ages. One f his mst acclaimed perfrmances is f the Heres in the Sui and Tang Dynasties. He gave cuntless perfrmances f the “Fur Classic Nvels” (Rmance f the Three Kingdms, Jurney t the West, Dream f the Red Chamber and Water Margin) and als helped t bring lesser-knwn classical Chinese literature t new audiences.

T find ut hw effective language learning applicatins allw mbile users t study a new language anywhere and anytime, Shawn Lewen, a prfessr at Michigan State University (MSU), recently cnducted a study fcusing n a ppular language learning app and e-learning platfrm first launched in 2007, t see if it really wrked at teaching a new language.
“Despite the fact that millins glbally are already using language learning apps, there is a lack f published research n their effect n speaking skills, ” Lewen said. “Actually there are n ther studies that have researched mbile language learning apps in this way. Therefre, this study makes an imprtant cntributin t the field. ”
In the study, which is published in Freign Language Annals, 85 undergraduate students at MSU used the app tr 12 weeks t learn Spanish. At the beginning f the study, the students tk a pretest t examine their existing ral prficiency (熟练),vcabulary and grammar in Spanish.
