    Restrictive Relative Clauses (3)限制性定语从句(3) 限制性定语从句的定义 限制性定语从句在意义上是先行词不可缺少的定语从句,若去掉,所修饰的先行词往往不明确或主句的内容就不完整或失去意义。这种从句和主句的关系十分密切,书写时定语从句前面不用逗号分开。 He is the man whm/that I am waiting fr. 他就是我正在等待的那个人。 They rushed ver t help the man whse car had brken dwn. 那个人的车坏了,大家都跑过去帮忙。(此处 whse 用来修饰其后面的名词 car,其先行词是the man)
    关系代词that和which 的用法 1. which指物;that 既可指人,也可指物。它们在从句中作主语、宾语或表语,which 和 that 在从句中作宾语时可以省略。 Please find a rm which/that is big enugh fr all f us t live in. 请找一间足够住下我们所有人的房间。 This is the thief (that) we have been lking fr these days. 这就是我们近日来一直在找的小偷。 My hmetwn is n lnger the place that it used t be. 我的家乡不再是以前的样子。
    2. 在限制性定语从句中,关系代词指物时只能用that而不用which的情况: (1)当先行词是all、little、few、nne、anything、smething、everything、nthing等词时。 Can yu give me anything that has n sugar inside? 能不能给我点儿里面没有糖的东西? (2)当先行词是序数词或被序数词修饰时。 This is the first tw-strey bus that runs in ur city. 这是第一辆运行于我市的双层公交车。 (3)当先行词是形容词最高级或被形容词最高级所修饰时。 Guilin is the mst beautiful city that I have ever visited. 桂林是我游览过的最美丽的城市。
    (4)当先行词被the nly、the very、the same、the right等修饰时。 This is the very scarf that mther has been lking fr.   这就是妈妈一直在找的那条围巾。 (5)当先行词既有人又有物时。 Can yu tell me the peple and events that yu saw in Britain? 你能告诉我你在英国见到的人和事吗? (6)句子中出现过which或wh之类的词,为了避免重复,要用that。 Which f the bks that had pictures was wrth reading? 哪本有图画的书值得读呢?
    3. 在限制性定语从句中只用which不用that的情况: (1)先行词为that、thse时,用which,而不用that。 What’s that which is under the desk? 在桌子底下的那东西是什么? (2)关系代词前有介词时,一般用which,而不用that。 This is the rm in which he lives. 这就是他住的房间。
    关系代词whse的用法 whse既可指人,也可指物,在从句中修饰名词作定语,相当于所修饰成分的前置所有格。它可以转化为“the+名词+f which/whm”和“f which/ whm+the+名词”的形式。 This is the scientist whse name is knwn all ver the cuntry. →This is the scientist the name f whm is knwn all ver the cuntry. 这就是那位全国知名的科学家。 Please pass me the bk whse cver is green. →Please pass me the bk f which the cver is green. 请递给我那本绿色封面的书。
    1. 关系副词when:指时间,在从句中作时间状语。它的先行词通常有time、day、week、year 等。 I can’t frget the day when I first saw yu. 我永远不会忘记第一次见到你的日子。 2. 关系副词where:指地点,在从句中作地点状语。它的先行词通常有place、street、huse、city、cuntry 以及一些抽象意义的名词,如 pint、case、psitin、cnditin、situatin。 This is the huse where they lived a week ag. 这是一个星期前他们住过的房子。 3. 关系副词why:指原因或理由,它的先行词只有reasn。 The reasn why I dn’t trust him is that he ften tells lies. 我不信任他的原因是他常常撒谎。
    “介词+关系代词”引导的定语从句 “介词+关系代词”结构中的介词可以是 in、n、abut、frm、fr、with、t等,关系代词只可用 whm 或 which,不可用 that。 D yu remember the day n which yu jined ur club? 还记得你加入我们俱乐部的那一天吗? In the dark street, there wasn’t a single persn t whm he culd turn fr help. 在漆黑的大街上没有一个人能为他提供帮助。 【名师点津】 动词短语,如listen t、lk fr、depend n、pay attentin t、take care f 等,在定语从句中一般不宜将介词与动词分开。
