    Researchers in a new study described the unusual sleep pattern f these cean animals. They fund that when these mammals g t feed n trips that can last seven mnths, they sleep just tw hurs each day.     The researchers placed a head cvered with sensrs n the heads f the seals that they studied. The sensrs recrded sleep signals created by the seals’ brains and heart rate. The sensrs als recrded the animals’ lcatin and depth beneath the sea.
    The researchers studied female seals because they g ut n lng pen-cean trips while males feed in castal waters.
    During dives lasting abut 30 minutes, the seals went int a deep sleep called slw-wave sleep while keeping a cntrlled dwnward mvement. When they then experienced rapid-eye-mvement (REM) sleep, the seals fell int a turning pattern. Then, at the deepest pint f their sleeping dive—up t 377 meters deep—they wake up and swim back t the surface.
    Terrie Williams is a scientist at the University f Califrnia at Santa Cruz wh helped write the study. Hwever, because the patients were t weak t stand fr lng perids f time, I went back t the sickrm t get sme quilts and spread them n the grass fr the patients t rest n them. I then helped rescue wrkers set up tents and create a rescue center, and thus the patients recvered their nrmal treatment.
