He and his wife had just parked arund the crner frm their wn huse in Allentwn, Pennsylvania, when they gt a call frm ne f his daughters: “The huse next dr is n fire! ” He went t investigate. That's when he saw a wman crying desperately n their prch.
    “The baby' s in there! ” the wman cried. Thugh the fire department had been called, Surrell, then 64, instinctively ran inside. “The baby” was 8-year-ldTiara Rberts, the wman's granddaughter.
    Entering the burning huse was like “running int a bucket f black paint,” Surrell says. The thick smke caused him t stumble blindly arund, burned his eyes, and made it impssible t breathe. The cnditins wuld have been dangerus t anyne, but fr Surrell, wh has chrnic bstructive pulmnary disease (慢性阻塞性肺病), they were life-threatening.
    After a few minutes in the smke-filled huse, he retreated utside t catch his breath. Surrell knew he culdn't hld his breath fr lng. Taking a deep breath, he went in a secnd time. The darkness was verwhelming. Yet because the huse had a similar layut (布局)t h is, he fund the stairs and made it t the secnd flr. He turned t the right and was met by intense heat. He was already ut f breath.
    His thrat and lungs burned as if he'd breathed in fire instead f the smke and st in the air. Every blink stung his eyes. All he culd hear was the crackling and ppping f burning wd.     When the bell rang Lrena hurried ut because the bus she caught fr hme left ten minutes after schl. She raced t bard the bus and fund a seat. After a few minutes the driver started the engine and drve away when Lrena lked ut f the windw and saw Eddie. “The jacket!” she screamed. She sht frm her seat and ran up t the driver. “Yu’ve gt t stp! I frgt Eddie’s jacket!” “Wh’s Eddie? I dn’t knw n Eddie,” the driver said crssly. “Sit dwn.”
    All that evening she was upset and blamed her bilgy teacher fr her prblem. If he hadn’t made them dissect(解剖)frgs, she wuldn’t have been s absent-minded. The next day Lrena rushed frm the bus t the bilgy rm. The jacket was nt there!
