Last May, “ec-mermaid (生态美人鱼)” Merle Liivand brke her wn wrld recrd fr swimming with a single fin (鳍). She swam the distance f a full marathn in the rugh waters f Biscayne Bay, Flrida. She even picked trash ut f the water as she swam.
Liivand was brn in Estnia. As a child, she had health prblems, and engaged in swimming t help her lungs get strnger. She was sn taking part in pen water swimming cntests, smetimes even in icy water.

Using cameras t recrd vides whenever an animal walks by, the researchers surveyed dnkey activity in 14 different wetlands thrughut Death Valley Natinal Park in Califrnia. They were thus able t identify eight wetlands with clear evidence f cugars killing dnkeys. They als visited each site in persn t lk fr dnkey bdies, which cugars will ften hide and return t later n. “Sme f these hiding sites were used ver and ver again, s that every time we went, there wuld be three r fur fresh kills,” says Erick Lundgren, eclgist at Aarhus University and lead authr n the study.
In the sites that lacked cugars, dnkeys were frequently caught n camera during the day and night. But in sites with active cugar predatin, the dnkeys were nly seen during the day. At night, the dnkeys avided any wetlands where cugars had recently killed ther dnkeys.
