Habits are a funny thing. We reach fr them mindlessly, setting ur brains n aut-pilt and relaxing int the uncnscius cmfrt f familiar rutine. "Nt chice, but habit rules the unreflecting creatures," William Wrdswrth said in the 19th century. In the everchanging 21st century, even the wrd "habit" carries a negative meaning.
S it seems cntradictry t talk abut habits in the same cntext as innvatin (创新). But brain researchers have discvered that when we cnsciusly develp new habits, we create parallel paths, and even entirely new brain cells, that can jump ur trains f thught nt new, innvative tracks.
Rather than dismissing urselves as unchangeable creatures f habit, we can instead direct ur wn change by cnsciusly develping new habits. In fact, the mre new things we try, the mre creative we becme.
But dn't bther trying t kill ff ld habits; nce thse ruts f prcedure are wrn int the brain, they're there t stay. Instead, the new habits we deliberately press int urselves create parallel pathways that can bypass thse ld rads.
"The first thing needed fr innvatin is attractin t wnder, "says Dawna Markva, authr f The Open Mind. "But we are taught instead t 'decide', just as ur president calls himself "the Decider'.” She adds, hwever, that "t decide is t kill ff all pssibilities but ne. A gd innvatinal thinker is always explring the many ther pssibilities."
“All f us wrk thrugh prblems in ways f which we're unaware, “she says. Researchers in the late 1960s discvered that humans are brn with the ability t apprach challenges in fur primary ways: analytically, prcedurally, cllabratively (合作地)and innvatively. At the end f adlescence, hwever, the brain shuts dwn half f that ability, preserving nly thse ways f thught that have seemed mst valuable during the first decade r s f life.
The current emphasis n standardized testing highlights analysis and prcedure, meaning that few f us use ur innvative and cllabrative ways f thught "This breaks the majr rule in the American belief system-that anyne can d anything, " explains M. J. Ryan, authr f the 2006 bk This Year I Will... and Ms. Markva's business partner. “That's a lie that we have preserved, and it fsters cmmnness. Knwing what yu're gd at and ding even mre f it creates excellence." This is where develping new habits cmes in.
12. William Wrdswrth's wrds are mentined in the first paragraph t ________
A. give the definitin f habits B. explain hw habits are frmed
C. highlight the nature and influence f habits D. indicate the benefits f having habits
13. Brain researchers have discvered that ________.
A. the frming f new habits can be guided
B. the develpment f habits can be predicted
C. the regulatin f ld habits can be transfrmed
D. the track f new habits can be created uncnsciusly
14. Which f the fllwing statements mst prbably agrees with Dawna Markva's view?
A. Decisin makes n sense in chices. B. Curisity makes creative minds active.
C. Creative ideas are brn f a relaxing mind. D. Innvatrs always stick with nly ne pssibility.
15. What is Ryan's attitude twards standardized testing?
A. Psitive.B. Indifferent.C. Shrt-sighted.D. Critical.
