Finland was knwn as a rather quiet cuntry. Since 2008, the Cuntry Brand Delegatin (国家品牌代表团) has been lking fr a natinal brand that wuld make sme nise t market the cuntry as a wrld-famus turist destinatin. In 2010, the Delegatin issued a “Cuntry Brand Reprt,” which highlighted a hst f marketable themes, including Finland’s famus educatinal system. One key theme was brand new: silence. As the reprt explained, mdern sciety ften seems intlerably lud and busy. “Silence is a resurce,” it said.
Silence first appeared in scientific research as a cntrl r baseline, against which scientists cmpare the effects f nise r music. Researchers have mainly studied it by accident, as physician Lucian Bernardi did in his study f the physilgical (生理学) effects f music. “We didn’t think abut the effect f silence,” he said. Bernardi bserved tw dzen test subjects while they listened t six musical tracks. He fund that the impacts f music culd be read directly in the bldstream, via changes in bld pressure, carbn dixide, and circulatin in the brain. “During almst all srts f music, there was a physilgical change with a cnditin f arusal (兴奋),” he explained.
This effect made sense, given that active listening requires attentin. But the mre striking finding appeared between musical tracks. Bernardi and his clleagues discvered that randmly added stretches f silence als had a great effect, but in the ppsite directin. In fact, tw-minute silent pauses prved far mre relaxing than either “relaxing” music r a lnger silence played befre the experiment started. The blank pauses that Bernardi had cnsidered irrelevant, in ther wrds, became the mst interesting bject f study. Silence seemed t be heightened by cntrasts, maybe because it gave test subjects a release frm careful attentin. “Perhaps the arusal is smething that cncentrates the mind in ne directin, s that when there is nthing mre arusing, then yu have deeper relaxatin,” he said.
This finding is reinfrced by neurlgical (神经系统的) research. Relevant research shws when ur brains rest quietly, they integrate external and internal infrmatin int “a cnscius (意识的) wrkspace.” Freedm frm nise and gal-directed tasks, it appears, unites the quiet withut and within, allwing ur cnscius wrkspace t d its thing t discver where we fit in.
Nra Vikman, a cnsultant n silence fr Finland’s marketers, knws silence well. Living in a remte and quiet place in Finland, she discvers thughts and feelings that aren’t detectable in her busy daily life. “If yu want t knw yurself, yu have t be with yurself, and discuss with yurself, and be able t talk with yurself.”
24.Why des the authr mentin the Cuntry Brand Reprt in Paragraph 1?
A.T present hw Finland viewed silence. B.T highlight the need f nise in Finland.
C.T explain why Finland issued the brands. D.T indicate the authrity f the Delegatin.
25.What can be inferred abut Lucian Bernardi’s discvery?
A.It challenged the calming effect f music. B.It emphasized the rle f silence between sunds.
C.It illustrated the lss f attentiveness after silence. D.It stated brains’ infrmatin prcessing in the quiet.
26.As fr Nra Vikman’s attitude t silence, the authr is ________.
A.dubtfulB.supprtiveC.disapprvingD.uncncerned
27.Which wuld be the best title fr the passage?
A.Silence: A Limited ResurceB.Silence: A Misunderstd Tl
C.Silence: The Unexpected PwerD.Silence: The Value by Cntrasts

Cnsider these facts: The tennis champin Williams sisters are a generatin apart, accrding t the Pew Research Center. Venus, brn in 1980, is labelled “Gen X”; Serena, brn in 1981, is a “millennial”. Meanwhile, Dnald Trump and Michelle Obama bth belng t the same generatin. The frmer was brn in 1946 while the latter was brn in 1964, making them bth “baby bmers”.
Befre yu push these diverse persnalities int generatinal steretypes (刻板印象), let me stp yu there: Just dn’t. Generatin labels, althugh widely adpted by the public, have n basis in scial reality. In fact, in ne recent survey, mst peple did nt identify the crrect generatin fr themselves, even when they were shwn a list f ptins.
This is nt surprising since the labels are frced by survey researchers, jurnalists r marketing firms befre the identities they are suppsed t describe even exist. Instead f asking peple which grup they identify with and why, they just declare the labels and start making prnuncements abut them. That’s nt hw scial identity wrks.
The practice f naming “generatins” based n birth year ges back at least t the suppsed “lst-generatin” f the late 19th century. But as the traditin slid int a never-ending cmpetitin t be the first t prpse the next name that sticks, it has prduced gradually declining returns t scial science and the public understanding.
The suppsed bundaries between generatins are n mre meaningful than the names they’ve been given. There is n research identifying the apprpriate bundaries between generatins, and there is n statistical basis fr requiring the sweeping character traits (特征) that are believed t define them. In ne article yu might read that millennials are “liberal lins”, “dwnwardly mbile”, and “distrustful”; even thugh they als “get alng well with their parents, respect their elders and wrk well with clleagues”.
Ridiculus, clearly. But what’s the harm? Aren’t these labels just a bit f fun fr writers? A methd t attract readers and a way f cmmunicating generatinal change, which n ne wuld deny is a real phenmenn? We, in academic scial science, study and teach scial change, but we dn’t study and teach these labels because they simply aren’t real. And in scial science, reality still matters.
Wrse than irrelevant, such baseless labels drive peple tward steretyping and thughtless character judgment. Measuring and describing scial change is essential, and it can be useful t analyze the histrical perid in which peple were brn and raised, but drawing randm lines between birth years and assigning names t them desn’t help.
Tday there are lts f gd alternatives t label generatins. We can simply describe peple by the decade in which they were brn and define generatinal grups specifically related t a particular issue—such as 2020 schl kids. With the arrival f “Generatin Z”, there has never been a better time t get ff this train.
28. What d the facts listed in Paragraph 1 imply?
A. Different peple have different pinins abut generatin labels.
B. Peple with the same generatin label may nt be f similar age.
C. Generatinal change can be measured by generatin labels.
D. Generatin labels are widely adpted by celebrities.
29. The underlined wrd “sticks” in Paragraph 4 prbably means ______.
A. is understdB. is analyzedC. is describedD. is accepted
30. Accrding t the passage, the authr may agree that ______.
A. the generatin label is a harmless device writers use t reflect reality
B. generatin bundaries are mre meaningful than generatin labels
C. assigning character traits t a certain generatin is misguided
D. jurnalists shuld find alternative ways t judge character
31. Which f the fllwing wuld be the best title fr the passage?
A. Generatin labels: It’s high time t retire them
B. Generatin labels: The nging debate will never end
C. Generatin labels: What d they say abut wh we are?
D. Generatin labels: Expand r bridge generatinal differences?

Elizabeth Spelke, a cgnitive (认知的) psychlgist at Harvard, has spent her career testing the wrld's mst cmplex learning system-the mind f a baby. Babies might seem like n match fr artificial intelligence (AI). They are terrible at labeling images, hpeless at mining text, and awful at vide games. Then again, babies can d things beynd the reach f any AI. By just a few mnths ld, they’ve begun t grasp the fundatins f language, such as grammar. They’ve started t understand hw t adapt t unfamiliar situatins.
Yet even experts like Spelke dn’t understand precisely hw babies — r adults, fr that matter — learn. That gap pints t a puzzle at the heart f mdern artificial intelligence: We're nt sure what t aim fr.
Cnsider ne f the mst impressive examples f AI, Alpha Zer, a prgramme that plays bard games with superhuman skill. After playing thusands f games against itself at a super speed, and learning frm winning psitins, Alpha Zer independently discvered several famus chess strategies and even invented new nes. It certainly seems like a machine eclipsing human cgnitive abilities. But Alpha Zer needs t play millins mre games than a persn during practice t learn a game. Mst imprtantly, it cannt take what it has learned frm the game and apply it t anther area.
T sme AI experts, that calls fr a new apprach. In a Nvember research paper, Francis Chllet, a well-knwn AI engineer, argued that it’s misguided t measure machine intelligence just accrding t its skills at specific tasks. “Humans dn’t start ut with skills; they start ut with a brad ability t acquire new skills,” he says. “What a strng human chess player is demnstrating is nt nly the ability t play chess, but the ptential t fulfill any task f a similar difficulty.” Chllet psed a set f prblems, each f which requires an AI prgramme t arrange clred squares n a grid (格栅) based n just a few prir examples. It’s nt hard fr a persn. But mdern machine-learning prgrammes-trained n huge amunts f data — cannt learn frm s few examples.
Jsh Tenenbaum, a prfessr in MIT's Center fr Brains, Minds & Machines, wrks clsely with Spelke and uses insights frm cgnitive science as inspiratin fr his prgrammes. He says much f mdern AI misses the bigger picture, cmparing it t a cartn abut a tw-dimensinal wrld ppulated by simple gemetrical (几何形的) peple. AI prgrammes will need t learn in new ways — fr example, by drawing causal inferences rather than simply finding patterns. “At sme pint — yu knw, if yu’re intelligent — yu realize maybe there's smething else ut there,” he says.
32. Cmpared t an advanced AI prgramme, a baby might be better at _______________.
A. labeling images B. identifying lcatins C. playing games D. making adjustments
33. What des the underlined wrd “eclipsing” in Paragraph 3 prbably mean?
A. Stimulating.B. Measuring.C. Beating.D. Limiting.
34. Bth Francis Chllet and Jsh Tenenbaum may agree that _______________.
A. AI is gd at finding similar patterns B. AI shuld gain abilities with less training
C. AI lacks the ability f generalizing a skill D. AI will match humans in cgnitive ability
35. Which wuld be the best title fr this passage?
A. What is exactly intelligence? B. Why is mdern AI advanced?
C. Where is human intelligence ging? D. Hw d humans tackle the challenge f AI?

第一段内容可知,首句“Finland was knwn as a rather quiet cuntry.(芬兰是一个相当安静的国家。)”为该段的主旨句,由此可推知,“In 2010, the Delegatin issued a “Cuntry Brand Reprt,” which highlighted a hst f marketable themes, including Finland’s famus educatinal system. One key theme was brand new: silence.(2010年,代表团发布了一份“国家品牌报告”,其中突出了一系列适销对路的主题,包括芬兰著名的教育体系。一个关键主题是全新的:安静。)”中提到的关键主题为“安静”,是为该段的主旨句提供论据,突出“安静”是芬兰的主题之一,因此它的作用是通过权威发布而展示芬兰如何看待安静。故选A项。
根据文章第三段内容“Silence seemed t be heightened by cntrasts, maybe because it gave test subjects a release frm careful attentin. ‘Perhaps the arusal is smething that cncentrates the mind in ne directin, s that when there is nthing mre arusing, then yu have deeper relaxatin,’ he said.(安静似乎在对比中得到了加强,也许是因为它让测试对象从仔细的关注中得到了释放。他说:“也许这种兴奋是一种将思想集中在一个方向上的东西,所以当没有更多的兴奋时,你会有更深的放松。”)”可知,通过研究,他发现了安静作为声音间隔时对测试对象有很大的影响,与声音对比下的安静反而让人有更深的放松。由此可推知,他的发现强调了安静在声音之间的作用。故选B项。
26.推理判断题。根据文章末尾部分作者引用Nra Vikman的话“If yu want t knw yurself, yu have t be with yurself, and discuss with yurself, and be able t talk with yurself. (如果你想了解自己,你必须和自己在一起,和自己讨论,并且能够和自己交谈。)”可知,Nra Vikman通过住在一个偏僻安静的地方感受到了安静独处才能认识自己,找到自己,这是与作者上一段的论述“Freedm frm nise and gal-directed tasks, it appears, unites the quiet withut and within, allwing ur cnscius wrkspace t d its thing t discver where we fit in.(似乎,远离噪音和目标导向的任务,将内外的宁静结合在一起,让我们有意识的工作空间去发现我们适合的地方。)”
通读文章内容可知,文章首段末尾通过引述的方法揭示了文章的主旨,“As the reprt explained, mdern sciety ften seems intlerably lud and busy. ‘Silence is a resurce,’ it said.(正如报告所解释的那样,现代社会似乎常常喧闹繁忙到令人无法忍受。“安静是一种资源,”它说。)”,即,文章主要围绕“安静是一种资源”这一话题进行讲述,并在后文段落通过介绍相关研究及真人实例的感受强调了安静的强大力量。选项C“Silence: The Unexpected Pwer(安静:没有料想到的力量)”贴合主旨。故选C项。
28. B 29. D 30. C 31. A
根据第一段“Meanwhile, Dnald Trump and Michelle Obama bth belng t the same generatin. The frmer was brn in 1946 while the latter was brn in 1964, making them bth “baby bmers”.”(同时,唐纳德·特朗普和米歇尔·奥巴马都属于同一代人。
根据第四段“But as the traditin slid int a never-ending cmpetitin t be the first t prpse the next name”(但是,随着这一传统滑向一场无休止的要成为第一个提出下一个名字的竞争,)以及“it has prduced gradually declining returns t scial science and the public understanding.”(社会科学和公众理解的回报率逐渐下降。)
根据第二段“Befre yu push these diverse persnalities int generatinal steretypes (刻板印象), let me stp yu there: Just dn’t.”(在你将这些不同的性格推入代际刻板印象之前,让我在这里阻止你:不要这样做。)以及第六段“We, in academic scial science, study and teach scial change, but we dn’t study and teach these labels because they simply aren’t real. And in scial science, reality still matters.”(在学术社会科学中,我们研究和教授社会变革,但我们不研究和教授这些标签,因为它们根本不是真实的。
故选A项。
32. D 33. C 34. C 35. A

根据划线单词前一句“After playing thusands f games against itself at a super speed, and learning frm winning psitins, Alpha Zer independently discvered several famus chess strategies and even invented new nes. (在以超快的速度与自己对弈数千场,并从获胜位置中学习之后,阿尔法零独立地发现了几种著名的国际象棋策略,甚至发明了新的策略)”可推知,阿尔法零超越了人类的认知能力,所以划线单词“eclipsing”的意思是“超过,胜过”,划线句意是:它看起来确实像是一台超越人类认知能力的机器。故选C。
34.推理判断题。根据倒数第二段最后一句“What a strng human chess player is demnstrating is nt nly the ability t play chess, but the ptential t fulfill any task f a similar difficulty. (一位强大的人类棋手展示的不仅是下棋的能力,还有完成任何类似难度任务的潜力)”和最后一段“AI prgrammes will need t learn in new ways — fr example, by drawing causal inferences rather than simply finding patterns. (人工智能程序将需要以新的方式学习——例如,通过得出因果推论,而不是简单地寻找模式)”可推知, Francis Chllet 和Jsh Tenenbaum可能同意人工智能缺乏一种技能的泛化能力。故选C。
35.主旨大意题。阅读文章,并根据第二段“Yet even experts like Spelke dn't understand precisely hw babies — r adults, fr that matter — learn. That gap pints t a puzzle at the heart f mdern artificial intelligence: We’re nt sure what t aim fr. (然而,即使是像斯皮尔克这样的专家也不能确切地理解婴儿—或成人—是如何学习的。这一差距指向了现代人工智能的一个核心难题:我们不确定该以什么为目标)”可知,本文讲述了所谓真正的智力是什么。故选A。
