    In a new study published in Earth-Science Reviews, an internatinal team f researchers led by the UK’s Natinal Oceangraphy Centre(NOC) wrked t illuminate this prblem by assessing hw and where future climate change is likely t impact subsea cables.
    By analyzing published datasets, the researchers identified reginal climate change “htspts” where threats t subsea cables may becme mre intense. These include areas in the western Pacific where changes t trpical cyclne (热带气旋) intensity and frequency have already increased cable damage.
    “In ur paper, we cnducted the first cmprehensive assessment f a range f climate-related threats t seaflr cables acrss the glbe and their landing statins,” says study c-authr Thmas Wahl. “Our analysis clearly stresses the need t carefully plan cable rutes and landing statin lcatins factring in a range f lcal threats and hw thse are affected by climate change.”
    When we lk at Flrida, there are at least 21 subsea telecmmunicatins cables that cnnect t the Flrida castline, Nrth and Suth America and the Caribbean, meaning that there will be a breakdwn in cmmunicatins wrldwide if a cable is damaged, the researchers say.
    Hwever, the study identifies the imprtance f assessing changing cnditins, particularly where multiple cable systems share a landing pint, as they may be affected by cmbinatins f threats that affect the lw-lying Flrida castline, such as sea level rise, and changes in strm activity. “Our reliance n cables that are n wider than a garden hse (软管) is a surprise t many, wh regard satellites as the main means f cmmunicatin,” says lead authr Mike Clare, a researcher with NOC. “But satellites simply dn’t have the bandwidth t supprt mdern digital systems.
