    Health Warning as UK Swelters
Peple acrss the UK have enjyed the sunshine this week, but they have als been advised t be careful as a heat wave hits much f the cuntry.
A heat wave is defined (21)_______ a perid f ht weather where temperatures are higher than is expected fr the time f year. They usually happen in summer.
Hwever, climate change (lng-term changes t weather patterns, mstly (22)_______ (cause) by human activities such as burning fssil fuels, farming and cutting dwn frests) is increasing the chance f heat waves happening and making then mre extreme. The current ht weather is even (23)_______ (much) extreme in sme Eurpean cuntries — temperatures in suthern Spain have reached 46℃.
Heat waves can be a danger t peple’s health, especially fr vulnerable grups such as the elderly, children and peple (24)_______ certain health cnditins. Hwever, anyne (25)_______ suffer frm the effects f extreme heat, including dehydratin (nt having enugh water) and heatstrke (a cnditin caused by the bdy verheating). Glden Rules f Gd Design
What makes gd design? Over the years, designers and artists have been trying t 31 the essentials f gd design. They have fund that sme sayings can help peple understand the ideas f gd design. They are fur as fllws.
Less is mre. This saying is assciated with the German-brn architect Mies van der Rhe. In his Mdernist view, beauty lies in simplicity and elegance, and the aim f the designer is t create slutins t prblems thrugh the mst efficient means. Design shuld avid unnecessary 32
Mre is nt a bre. The American-brn architect Rbert Venturi cncluded that if simplicity is dne badly, the result is 33 design. Pst-Mdernist designers began t 34 with decratin and clr again. Prduct design was heavily influenced by this view and can be seen in kitchen 35 such as vens and kettles.
Fitness fr purpse. Successful prduct design takes int cnsideratin a prduct’s functin, purpse, shape, frm, clr, and s n. The mst imprtant result fr the user is that the prduct des what is 36 . Fr example, think f a(n) 37 desk lamp. It needs t be cnstructed frm materials that will stand the heat f the lamp and regular adjustments by the user. It als needs t be stable. Mst imprtantly, it needs t 38 light where it is needed.
Frm fllws emtin. This phrase is assciated with the German designer Hartmut Esslinger. He believes design must take int 39 the sensry side f ur nature—sight, smell, tuch and taste. These are as imprtant as ratinal (理性的). When chsing everyday prducts such as tthpaste, we appreciate a cl-lking device that allws us t easily 40 the tthpaste nt ur brush.
    Ⅲ. Reading Cmprehensin
    Sectin A
Directins: Fr each blank in the fllwing passages there are fur wrds r phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the wrd r phrase that best fits the cntext.
The beauty, majesty, and timelessness f a primary rainfrest are indescribable. It is impssible t 41 n film, t describe in wrds, r t explain t thse wh have never had the awe-inspiring experience f standing in the heart f a primary rainfrest.
Rainfrests have 42 ver millins f years t turn int the incredibly cmplex envirnments they are tday. Rainfrests represent a stre f living and 43 renewable natural resurces that fr an immeasurably lng perid f time, by virtue f their richness in bth animal and plant species, have 44 a wealth f resurces fr the survival and well-being f humankind. These resurces have included basic fd supplies, clthing, shelter, fuel, spices, industrial raw materials, and medicine fr all thse wh have lived in the majesty f the frest. 45 , the inner dynamics (动力学;相互作用的方式) f a trpical rainfrest is a cmplex and fragile system. Everything is s 46 that upsetting ne part can lead t unknwn damage r even destructin f the whle. Sadly, it has taken nly a century f human interventin t destry what nature designed t 47 frever.
The scale f human 48 n ecsystems everywhere has increased enrmusly in the last few decades. Since 1980 the glbal ecnmy has tripled in size and the wrld ppulatin has increased by 30 percent. Cnsumptin f everything n the planet has risen—at a cst t ur 49 . In 2001, The Wrld Resurces Institute estimated that the demand fr rice, wheat, and crn is expected t grw by 40% by 2025, increasing irrigatin water demands by 50% r mre. They further reprted that the demand fr wd culd duble by the year 2050; 50 , it is still the trpical frests f the wrld that supply the mst part f the wrld’s demand fr wd.
In 1950, abut 15 percent f the Earth’s land surface was cvered by rainfrest. Tday, mre than half has already gne up in 51 . In fewer than fifty years, abut half f the wrld’s trpical rainfrests have fallen 52 t fire r defrestatin, and the rate f destructin is still 53 . Unbelievably, mre than 200,000 acres f rainfrest are burned every day. That is mre than 150 acres lst every minute f every day, and 78 millin acres lst every year! Mre than 20 percent f the Amazn rainfrest is already gne, and much mre is severely 54 as the destructin cntinues. If nthing is dne t cntrl this 55 , the entire Amazn culd well be gne within fifty years. Fewer rainfrests mean less rain, less xygen fr us t breathe, and an increased threat frm glbal warming.

Seasickness and sunburn. Taking care f ld peple in different situatins. My medical friends did their best t persuade me. Everyne said that running away t sea wuld ruin my career. But after five sleep-deprived years wrking as a junir dctr, I was willing t take the risk.
Hungry fr adventure, I barded a bright white ship in Singapre. With 2,000 passengers and crew, she was the size f a small twn.
T my relief, the hspital was well equipped, with an X-ray machine and a bld analyzer.
That first cruise was a learning experience, a tight schedule full f safety drills. There was s much new infrmatin t take in. Even remembering which f the unifrms t wear each day was a challenge. Mst cnfusing, I ften frgt t change my clck when the ship crssed time znes.
As a dctr, I was respnsible fr the 600 crew including waiters, engineers, cks and navigatrs, and I was n call fr the entire ship.
Far frm treating seasickness and sunburn, as I’d been warned, my patients were wide and varied. The ship’s medical center was essentially a flating emergency rm, but we didn’t have a team f specialists n hand fr a secnd pinin. With lng and unpredictable hurs, it required mental tughness.
As yu can guess, many f the passengers were elderly. Heart attacks dn’t care abut gegraphy and emergency evacuatins (疏散) were difficult t arrange.
I recall ne such patient, wh was taken ff the ship n a stretcher (担架) halfway thrugh the Panama Canal. After a terrifying ride in the back f an ld ambulance, I was relieved that the patient survived lng enugh t arrive at the hspital in Panama City.
Thankfully, there were several unexpected benefits t the jb. I regularly enjyed the passenger facilities, including the gym, spa and deck buffet. I even hsted my wn table f passengers in the evenings. On rare days f, I vlunteered as a tur guide n trips ashre. I gt t fly ver Alaska in a seaplane and watched a ballet in St Petersburg.
I nw understand that being a cruise ship dctr is nt a jb — it’s a way f life.
One year at sea became tw. I lst my career ambitins, but I redefined happiness in my life.

We all have a tendency t fake laugh, particularly when authrity figures in ur lives try t make a jke that just desn’t land. Thugh it might feel rude nt t laugh when yur in-laws r bss try t say smething funny, pretending t d s might nt be much better. It turns ut, even if yu think that yur frced laughing sunds genuine, peple are usually pretty gd at separating truly spirited belly laughs frm fake nes. But hw can they pssible knw the difference?
Well, when researchers at the University f Califrnia, Ls Angeles studied the acustic and perceptual differences between real and fake laughter, they fund that sme f the sunds assciated with genuine laughter is “really hard t fake.” In their study, the researchers determined that subjects were nly fled by 37 percent f fake laughter.
The mst prminent factr distinguishing real laughter frm fake laughter is duratin — r, mre specifically, the number f breaths taken in in between sunds. Seeing as it takes mre effrt and cncentratin t fake a laugh as ppsed t d it genuinely, peple tend t pause mre in between their “ha-ha’s” when they’re faking it. Evidently, that pausing is pretty nticeable.
“A fake laugh is basically an imitatin f a real laugh, but prduced with a slightly different set f vcal muscles cntrlled by a different part f ur brain,” Greg Bryant, the lead UCLA researcher n the study, explained. “The result is that there are subtle features f the laugh that sund like speech, and … peple are uncnsciusly quite sensitive t them.”
Peple have als prven t be emtinally sensitive t laughter as well. “Our rains are very sensitive t the scial and emtinal significance f laughter,” said Carlyn McGettigan, a scientist at Ryal Hllway, University f Lndn.
McGettigan cnducted a 2014 study that recrded participants’ brain respnses as they listened t the same peple prduce genuine laughter by watching funny vides, as ppsed t fake laughter. “During ur study, when participants heard a laugh that was psed, they activated regins f the brain assciated with mentalizing in an attempt t understand the ther persn’s emtinal and mental state,” she said.
S, while we may understand that certain scial situatins smetimes require fake laughter, mst f the time, ur instincts and emtinal intelligence are just t smart t buy int them.
Accrding t McGettigan, that’s a gd thing. “Evlutinarily speaking, it’s gd t be able t detect if smene is authentically experiencing an emtin r if they’re nt,” she said. “Because yu dn’t want t be fled.”
    63. What d researchers at the University f Califrnia want t find ut in this study?
    A. What is the difference between a fake laugh and a real ne.
    B. Which part f the brain cntrls the sund f ur laughter.
    C. Why d peple need t fake laugh when they dn’t want t.
    D. Hw t laugh as genuinely as pssible when yu are faking it.
    64. Yur frced laughing is mre nticeable than yu think, mainly because _______.
    A. yu seem mre cncentrated when yu laugh fr real
    B. yu take mre breaths when yu try t fake a laugh
    C. a fake laugh ften happens after a sudden pause
    D. a real laugh usually lasts lnger than a fake ne
    65. Which f the fllwing is true accrding t Greg Bryant?
    A. Real laughter is nt at all cntrllable by ur brain.
    B. Peple may ntice fake laughter withut knwing why.
    C. Peple use the same set f muscles t laugh and t speak.
    D. Faking laugh shares the same techniques as making speech.
    66. What has Carlyn McGettigan’s 2014 study prven?
    A. Certain scial situatins may require us t fake a laugh.
    B. Evlutin has enabled us t recgnize ther’s emtins.
    C. By instincts, we are able t tell a persn’s mental state.
    D. We can sense ther’s emtinal state when they laugh.

    Early Childhd Educatin
Early childhd educatin is the frmal teaching and care f yung children. It primarily fcuses n learning thrugh playing t encurage children’s different kinds f develpment. 67
Studies with Head Start prgrams thrughut the United States have shwn sme evidence that there are quite a few advantages t early childhd educatin, which can prduce significant gains in children’s learning and develpment. Cmpared with a child wh des nt attend pre-schl, children cmpleting their early educatin prgrams are fund t be better at math and reading skills. They are excited t learn and have the tls t d s. 68 These children are mre cmpetent in their pre-schl, kindergarten and schl-age years, and they are usually reprted as “friendlier” by parents and the children’s peers.
69 In studies with matched cntrl grups, mre students wh had early schling experiences were emplyed at the age f 19, fewer were n welfare, and fewer were invlved with the criminal activity. What’s mre, sme studies shw that children attending pre-schl are mre likely t graduate and have higher educatin, and be well integrated as an adult.
Early childhd educatin gives mst children a jump-start n educatin fr their kindergarten and primary schl years. It is clear that early childhd educatin d a lt f gd t children. 70 If early childhd educatin is less effective, perhaps the best mdel is finding strategies fr allwing a parent t stay hme with his r her child fr at least the first tw t three years. Als imprtant is cnsidering a child’s wn persnality. Individual differences in children mean that nt all children will get equal benefits frm early childhd educatin.

    What Is Zer Waste?
The gal f the “zer waste” mvement is t get rid f all waste frm prducts. “Zer waste” means using every part f a prduct. Tday, the zer waste idea can be fund everywhere frm fd t fashin.
Creating a zer waste restaurant is a challenge. It is very difficult t use every part f prduce and leave nthing behind. Creating a sup frm unused ingredients is a ppular way t use up extra fd items. Other ways are mre advanced. Sme restaurants use cffee grunds (咖啡渣) t flavr dishes. Sme cks als crush shrimp shells and reuse them in sauces.
While it’s challenging, zer waste restaurants appear t be n the rise. In the fashin industry, zer waste isn’t a new idea. But in tday’s wrld f fast fashin, zer waste is grwing mre ppular. Usually, cutting clth creates lts f waste. In zer waste fashin, designers try t avid this. One way t d s is by adding these extra pieces f clth t the final design. Anther way is t design clthing withut wasteful cuts.
Beynd restaurants and fashin, there are many ther pssibilities fr zer waste prducts. All restaurants need utensils (器皿). Bakey’s is a cmpany that is develping edible (可食用的) utensils. After using them, yu can eat them! Their spns are made f flur and cme in all kinds f flavrs. While these spns are nt hard enugh t cut meat, they are perfect fr rice dishes. Meanwhile, Air New Zealand is experimenting with edible cffee cups that are made by the cmpany Twice. They have already intrduced a line f flavred cups. After yu finish yur cffee, yu eat the cup, just like a ckie!
