Researchers in the U.K. asked vlunteers that questin, ding an nline pht­rating game, and the result is what yu'd expect. “Beautiful muntains, enugh greenery, beautiful water features like lakes and ceans,” says Chanuki Seresinhe, a data scientist at the Warwick Business Schl. The mre surprising finding was that human­built structures, twers and cttages, culd enhance the understanding f the beauty f a scene. And big expanses f green grass like athletic fields didn't actually rate that highly.
    What they did next is where the data science cmes in: They fed a cmputer 160, 000 phtgraphs rated thrugh the nline game. And they taught the machine t break each image int the scenic elements it cntained, snwy muntains, waterfalls, crsswalks and cnstructin sites.
    Then they presented the cmputer with a challenge: They asked it t rate the scenic beauty f ther phts it had never seen befre. And it actually did pretty well at estimating the average crwd­surced cnsensus(共识) f beauty. The study is in the jurnal RyalScietyOpenScience.
    Smart as it is, the scenery­lving cmputer prbably wn't be putting tur guides ut f business.
    “Actually I think it can help tur guides, because what's interesting is that I think maybe it can actually uncver places that might nt have been that ppular.” And Seresinhe says the system might als help city planners mre bjectively evaluate the scenic beauty f new urban develpments. “We can als nw lk at hw t design cities that peple find mre beautiful and which peple might want t actually spend mre time in.” If the cmputer desn't becme truly intelligent, humans may express subjective pinins entirely n their wn.
