New Mexic is famed fr rasted green chillies with a distinctive smky flavur, but it cmes at a cst — prducers in the state typically use prpane (丙烷) as fuel, releasing an estimated 7,800 tnnes f CO2 a year. Ken Armij at the Natinal Slar Thermal Test Facility (NSTTF) wanted t see if he culd match the flavur withut the need fr fssil fuels.
Armij, whse family wns a chilli farm, wrks with slar cncentratrs at NSTTF, nrmally used fr experiments biling liquid t prduce electricity, r simulating (模拟) the effect f re-entry n materials used in spacecraft. The facility uses rings f mirrrs t fcus sunlight n a 60-metre twer at the centre. He imprved a traditinal chilli raster and laded it with 10 kilgrams f chillies befre placing it in the twer t rast at 480°C.
A grup f green chilli cnnisseurs (品鉴师) blind-tasted the slar-rasted versin alngside the traditinal variety and rated them higher fr bth flavur and smell. Armij says infrared (红外线的) imaging shwed slar heating prduced a mre even distributin (分布) f heat with fewer htspts. “Slar-rasted chillies appeared t have a much cleaner taste because the lcalised heat frm prpane rasting can cause lcalised burning,” says Armij.
Althugh this test tk place at a research facility, Armij says the cst f slar cncentratrs is drpping and it culd be pssible t use technlgy develped at Sandia t build small slar cncentratrs at lw cst. These culd prduce the high temperatures needed fr rasting chillies and ther fds.
Armij is eager t try the technique with ther fdstuffs, including cca and cffee beans, which are grwn in lwer-incme cuntries and culd be slar rasted.
Pete Schwartz at Califrnia Plytechnic State University, wh has been explring slar cking fr many years, said that he was nt sure “whether slar cncentratrs will catch n in lwer-incme cuntries, where he has seen many slar prjects fail due t lack f training and technical supprt.”

"If the self r persn f tday, and that f tmrrw, are nt the same, but nly like persns, the persn f tday is really n mre interested in what will befall(降临到……头上) the persn f tmrrw, than in what will befall any ther persn," Jseph Butler, a well-knwn philspher wrte in 1736.

T find ut, Hershfield first had t find a way t measure smene's "future self-cntinuity". He settled n a simple graphic that presented pairs f circles representing the current self, and a future self (see belw). The circles verlapped(重叠) t varying degrees, and the participants had t identify which pair best described hw similar and hw cnnected they felt t a future self 10 years frm nw.
He then cmpared these respnses t his participants' real-life behavir. Hershfield first lked at his participants' real-life savings and he fund that the mre the participant felt cnnected t their future self, the mre mney they had already squirrelled away. What's mre, peple wh scre highly n the future self-cntinuity measure have higher mral standards than the peple wh struggle t identify with their future selves.
Hershfield cnfirmed that smene's (in)ability t identify with their future self can have lng-term cnsequences fr their verall wellbeing and that ur sense f cnnectin t ur future selves can be strengthened. Yu might cnsider a simple imaginative exercise in which yu write a letter t yurself 20 years frm nw, describing what is mst imprtant fr yu nw and yur plans fr the cming decades.
It might seem strange t start a "cnversatin" with an imagined persn but nce yur future self becmes alive in yur mind, yu may find it much easier t make the small persnal sacrifices(牺牲) that are essential t preserve yur wellbeing.
12、What d we learn abut the assumed persn described by Jseph Butler?

B.He is curius abut his future life.
C.He is bred with the same ld rutine day after day.
    D. He is seldm wrried abut the lng-term cnsequences f his actins.
13、What were the participants required t d in Hershfield's experiment?

故填was。

此处代词代指的是上文的“a wild animal”,名词的单数,用it而不是them。故将them改为it。
故将is改为are。
