My greatest regret in life is that I failed t tell my superb teachers hw much they cntributed t my early educatin.
Ruth Hammerman taught English t the eighth-graders. She was the first t shw me the rules f what Evelyn Waugh called ur “rich and delicate language.” She was a n-nnsense instructr. Unlike cmmn teachers, she diagramed (用图表展示) sentences s we culd knw the grammar rules. She never seemed t be tired f the simple pleasures f sharing her learning.
Under her influence, I had the strng belief that language needs t be well-spken and prperly written. Yet ver the years I never made the effrt t find her and t express my thankfulness fr what she did fr me. Tw years after being in her class, I began the study f Latin and French, and the fundatin (基础) she prvided in English grammar served me well. Sadly, I never lked back.
In high schl I tk advanced French in a class taught by Richard Miller, the finest teacher I have ever experienced at any level. Mr. Miller brught t his subject a surprisingly deep understanding and new analysis (分析). Reading “Phèdre”, Racine’s classic play, he asked us t nte there were 1,654 lines in it, and then pinted ut the care Racine devted t structure. Years later I made the same pint — giving Mr. Miller credit — in a cllege French class, and my prfessr was surprised by my understanding f the play. Mr. Miller taught us t enjy literature with particular pints f view. Yet I never made the effrt in later years t tell him what he meant t me.
Mr. Miller is certainly lng dead. If she is alive, Miss Hammerman wuld likely be in her 90s. In preparing this article, I tried t find her but was unsuccessful.
I am certain my act is cmmn. Peple ften frget t express lve and thankfulness t their teachers. I ught t have tld Miss Hammerman and Mr. Miller hw much they did fr me. I suppse they knew their wrk was effective because they believed in what they were ding. Nw I appreciate hw special they were.

By the time they reached the furth grade, kids wh played structured sprts were clearly better at fllwing instructins and remaining fcused in the classrm. There is smething special t the sprting envirnment — perhaps the sense f belnging t a team t a special grup with a cmmn gal — that appears t help kids understand the imprtance f respecting the rules and hnring respnsibilities.”
Researchers began studying 2,694 Canadian children arund the age f six, with teachers filled in questinnaires abut their behavir in schl. Meanwhile, the children’s parents were interviewed by phne r in persn abut their hme life. The exercise was the repeated fur years later t test what effect the behavir had.
Prfessr Pagani said: “We fund children wh had better behavir in the kindergarten class were mre likely t be invlved in sprt by age ten. Nevertheless, we fund thse children wh were specifically invlved in team sprts at kindergarten scred higher by the time they reached the furth grade.” The researchers believe sprting activities and attentin skills g hand in hand. In tday’s mtivatinal literature, failure is ften viewed as smething t be celebrated. Inspiratinal speakers are fnd f quting the wrds f the nvelist Samuel Beckett-“Fail again. Fail better.” It seems that disappintments are an essential stepping stne t success, a turning pint in ur life stry that will ultimately end in victry.
Hwever, psychlgical researches find mst f us struggle t handle failure cnstructively. In ther wrds, we fail t “fail frward”. We find ways t devalue the task at which we failed, and becme less mtivated t persevere and reach ur gals. This phenmenn is knwn as the “sur-grape effect”, which was discvered by Prfessr Hallgeir Sjastad.
Sjastad explains that “sur-grape effect” is a self-prtective mechanism. “Mst f us picture urselves as cmpetent peple, s when external feedback suggests therwise, it pses a serius threat t that self-image,” he says. “The easiest way ut is t deny r explain away the external signal, s we can reduce the incnsistency and preserve a psitive sense f self. We d this even withut nticing.”
If yu have ne bad interview fr yur dream jb, yu might cnvince yurself that yu dn’t really want it at all, and stp applying fr similar psitins. The same ges if yu fail t impress at a sprts trial, r if a publisher rejects the first submissin f yur manuscript. “We tend t explain away ur shrtcmings and cnvince urselves ur ‘Plan C’ is actually ur ‘Plan A’,” Sjastad says.
It desn’t mean we shuld persevere in gals all the time. It can be healthy t change ambitins if the prcess is n lnger making us happy. But the “sur-grape effect may lead us t cme t this decisin prematurely, rather than hanging n a little and seeing whether we might learn and imprve.
Failures are unavidable. By learning t face the disappintment instead f devaluing its imprtance and pretending nthing happened, yu may find it easier t achieve yur gals.

I tried t shw my jy fr getting a pet while trying t hide my disappintment that he wasn’t a cat. My parents must have knwn hw I was feeling because they suggested that I culd make a wish abut it.
Running t my bedrm, I made a wish sincerely that I wuld have a cat. Nt mre than a minute r tw passed when I heard a faint scratching sund(轻微的抓挠声) cming frm the frnt dr. Curius, I std up, appraching the pen frnt dr. There, sitting calmly befre me was a large, white cat.
