U.S. cities have intrduced taxes n drinks with added sugar in rder t reduce cnsumptin, but new research suggests these plicies currently have ne deadly flaw.

The researchers cmpared sales f the drinks during the study perid t the tw immediately previus weeks. During this time, the sugary drink tax was in effect, but there were n price labels n any drinks. They als cmpared sales t the tw years befre the tax was in effect.
Results shwed the share f sugary drinks bught when the labels simply shwed the price was nt significantly different frm the tw-week perid befre the study. But the share f sugary drinks purchased did decline when the labels mentined the price included the added tax. Labels that nted where the taxes wuld be spent had n significant effect beynd the labels that simply nted the added tax.
Anther study fund that when cnsumers were tld the tax was nly 1 2 cents, they reprted they were much mre likely t still purchase the drink. “Peple dn't like taxes, but they think this tax is much higher than it actually is.“ Dnnelly said. “If yu tell cnsumers the true cst f the tax, it is n lnger effective in reducing purchases. In the struggle t survive the ever htter deserts f Califrnia, there are winners and lsers. Amng the lsers are desert birds, whse ppulatins have fallen amng the heat stress f climate change. As it turns ut, the winners, are small burrwing mammals (穴居哺乳动物), including kangar rats and white-tailed squirrels, which can hide frm the sun undergrund. Researchers nted that the mammals frm a striking cntrast t the extremely bad cnditin f birds.
The mammal cmmunity is relatively stable cmpare t the bird cmmunity. Birds have a higher evaprative(蒸发) heat lss. Birds are mre expsed t the effects f warming, s they have higher energy csts t maintain their bdy temperature, while mammals are able t reduce their bdy temperature by using burrws during the day, cntributing t the stability f their cmmunity.
Temperatures have risen by abut 4 degrees Fahrenheit n average acrss the area studied, but the heat impacts birds and small mammals differently. As part f the study, scientists mdeled each species' bdy temperature and cling needs under different desert cnditins. T calculate that, they measured the cnductivity (传导率) f the animals' fur r feathers, and used infrmatin n their heat reducing behavirs, such as evaprative cling r living undergrund. The mdels shw that in the fight against climate change, there is nt a level playing field fr furred and feathered desert dwellers. Cling csts r the resurces needed t maintain stable bdy temperature are abut 3.3 times higher fr birds than thse fr small mammals, the study reprts. Rising temperatures resulting frm climate change increase cling csts by 58% fr birds, but nly 17% fr mammals.
Mammals have shwn this remarkable stability. It's really quite interesting that, in the same regin, with the same level f climate change, these tw very similar species have respnded very differently t the changes taking place. Insights int the status f different species can help scientists take steps t prtect them, such as increasing fire preventin in high desert areas, managing water use t preserve natural springs, and enhancing water surces in thse areas. The study als demnstrates that climate change is already reshaping the Califrnia desert.

B. Undergrund animals have higher cling csts.
C. Living things react differently t climate change.
D. Climate change is a great threat t animals’ survival.
35. What is the authr's purpse in writing the last paragraph?
