Children’s Acquiring the Principles f Mathematics and Science
It has been pinted ut that learning mathematics and science is nt s much learning facts as learning ways f thinking. It has als been emphasized that in rder t learn science, peple ften have t change the way they think in rdinary situatins. These changes in ways f thinking are ften referred t as “cnceptual changes”. But hw d “cnceptual changes” happen? Hw d children change their ways f thinking as they learn in schl?
The psychlgist Piaget suggested an interesting hypthesis (假说) relating t the prcess f cgnitive (认知的) change in children. Cgnitive change was expected t result frm the pupils’ wn intellectual activity. When met with a result that challenges their thinking, that is when faced with cnflict, pupils realize that they need t think again abut their wn ways f slving prblems, regardless f whether the prblem is ne in mathematics r in science. He hypthesised that cnflict brings abut unbalance, and then triggers prcesses that ultimately prduce cgnitive changes. Fr this reasn, pupils need t be actively engaged in slving prblems that will challenge their current mde f reasning. Hwever, Piaget als pinted ut that yung children d nt always abandn their ideas in the face f cnflicting evidence. They may actually abandn the evidence and keep their thery.
Piaget’s hypthesis abut hw cgnitive change ccurs was later translated int an educatinal apprach which is nw termed “discvery learning”. Discvery learning initially tk what is nw cnsidered the “lne learners” rute. The rle f the teacher was t select situatins that challenged the pupils’ reasning; and the pupils’ peers had n real rle in this prcess. Hwever, it was subsequently prpsed that interpersnal cnflict, especially with peers, might play an imprtant rle in prmting cgnitive change. This hypthesis has been investigated in many recent studies f science teaching and learning.
Christine Hwe and her clleagues, fr example, have cmpared children’s prgress in understanding several types f science cncepts when they are given the pprtunity t bserve relevant events. In ne study, Hwe cmpared the prgress f 8 t 12-year-ld children in understanding what influences mtin dwn a slpe. In rder t figure ut the rle f cnflict in grup wrk, they created tw kinds f grups accrding t a pre-test: ne in which the children had dissimilar views, and a secnd in which the children had similar views. They fund supprt fr the idea that children in the grups with dissimilar views prgressed mre after their training sessins than thse wh had been placed in grups with similar views. Hwever, they fund n evidence t supprt the idea that the children wrked ut their new cnceptins during their grup discussins, because prgress was nt actually bserved in a pst-test immediately after the sessins f grup wrk, but rather in a secnd test given arund fur weeks after the grup wrk.
32.Which f the fllwing statements is in line with Piaget’s hypthesis?
A.Teachers play a big rle in learning by explaining difficult cncepts.
B.Teaching shuld be cnsistent in rder t easily acquire knwledge.
C.Children can help each ther make cgnitive prgress.
D.Cgnitive prgress mainly relies n children’s wn intellectual activity.
33.The lne learner’ rute is an educatinal apprach which ________.
A.was adpted during discvery learning early n
B.requires help frm the pupils’ peers
C.relies n hw the teacher guides the students heavily
D.played an imprtant rle in cgnitive change
34.Which statement describes Hwe’s experiment with 8 t 12-year-ld children crrectly?
A.The mst active children made the least prgress accrding t a pre-test.
B.The children were evaluated n their abilities t understand a physics phenmenn.
C.The teacher aided the children t understand a scientific prblem in grup wrk.
D.All the children were wrking in mixed-ability grups t wrk ut new cnceptins.
