Life in the Clear
Transparent animals let light pass thrugh their bdies the same way light passes thrugh a windw. These animals typically live between the surface f the cean and a depth f abut 3,300 feet---as far as mst light can reach. Mst f them are extremely delicate and can be damaged by a simple tuch. Snke Jhnsen, a scientist in bilgy, says, “These animals live thrugh their life alne. They never tuch anything unless they’re eating it, r unless smething is eating them.”
And they are as clear as glass. Hw des an animal becme see-thrugh? It s trickier than yu might think.
The bjects arund yu are visible because they interact with light. Light typically travels in a straight line. But sme materials slw and scatter (散射) light, buncing it away frm its riginal path. Others absrb light, stpping it dead in its tracks. Bth scattering and absrptin make an bject lk different frm ther bjects arund it, s yu can see it easily.
But a transparent bject desn’t absrb r scatter light, at least nt very much. Light can pass thrugh it withut bending r stpping. That means a transparent bject desn’t lk very different frm the surrunding air r water. Yu dn’t see it yu see the things behind it.
T becme transparent, an animal needs t keep its bdy frm absrbing r scattering light. Living materials can stp light because they cntain pigments (色素) that absrb specific clrs f light. But a transparent animal desn’t have pigments, s its tissues wn’t absrb light. Accrding t Jhnsen, aviding absrptin is actually easy. The real challenge is preventing light frm scattering.
Animals are built f many different materials---skin, fat, and mre---and light mves thrugh each at a different speed. Every time light mves int a material with a new speed, it bends and scatters. Transparent animals use different tricks t fight scattering. Sme animals are simply very small r extremely flat. Withut much tissue t scatter light, it is easier t be see-thrugh. Others build a large, clear mass f nn-living jelly-like (果冻状) material and spread themselves ver it.
Larger transparent animals have the biggest challenge, because they have t make all the different tissues in their bdies slw dwn light exactly as much as water des. They need t lk unifrm. But hw they’re ding it is still unknwn. One thing is clear: fr these larger animals, staying transparent is an active prcess. When they die, they turn a nn-transparent milky white.
8. Accrding t Paragraph 1,transparent animals .
A. stay in grupsB. can be easily damaged
C. appear nly in deep ceanD. are beautiful creatures
9. The underlined wrd “dead” in Paragraph 3 means .
A. silentlyB. gradually
C. regularlyD. cmpletely
10. One way fr an animal t becme transparent is t .
A. change the directin f light travelB. gather materials t scatter light
C. avid the absrptin f lightD. grw bigger t stp light
11. The last paragraph tells us that larger transparent animals .
A. mve mre slwly in deep water
B. stay see-thrugh even after death
C. prduce mre tissues fr their survival
D. take effective actin t reduce light spreading
D
Technlgical change is everywhere and affects every aspect f life, mstly fr the better. Hwever, scial changes are brught abut by new technlgy are ften mistaken fr a change in attitudes.
An example at hand is the invlvement f parents in the lives f their children wh are attending cllege. Surveys (调查) n this tpic suggests that parents tday cntinue t be “very” r “smewhat” verly-prtective even after their children mve int cllege drmitries. The same surveys als indicate that the rate f parental invlvement is greater tday than it was a generatin ag. This is usually interpreted as a sign that tday’s parents are trying t manage their children’s lives past the pint where this behavir is apprpriate.
Hwever, greater parental invlvement des nt necessarily indicate that parents are failing t let g f their “adult” children.
In the cntext (背景) f this discussin, it seems valuable t first find ut the cause f change in the case f parents’ invlvement with their grwn children. If parents f earlier generatins had wanted t be in tuch with their cllege-age children frequently, wuld this have been pssible? Prbably nt. On the ther hand, des the pssibility f frequent cmmunicatin tday mean that the urge t d s wasn’t present a generatin ag? Many studies shw that lder parents — tday’s grandparents — wuld have called their children mre ften if the means and cst f ding s had nt been a barrier.
Furthermre, studies shw that finances are the mst frequent subject f cmmunicatin between parents and their cllege children. The fact that cllege students are financially dependent n their parents is nthing new; nr are requests fr mre mney t be sent frm hme. This phenmenn is neither gd nr bad; it is a fact f cllege life, tday and in the past.
Thanks t the advanced technlgy, we live in an age f bettered cmmunicatin. This has many implicatins well beyndthe rle that parents seem t play in the lives f their children wh have left fr cllege. But it is useful t bear in mind that all such changes cme frm the technlgy and nt sme imagined desire by parents t keep their children under their wings.
12. The surveys infrm us f ______.
A. the develpment f technlgy
B. the changes f adult children’s behavir
C. the parents’ ver-prtectin f their cllege children
D. the means and expenses f students’ cmmunicatin
13. The writer believes that ______.
A. parents tday are mre prtective than thse in the past
B. the disadvantages f new technlgy utweigh its advantages
C. technlgy explains greater parental invlvement with their children
D. parents’ changed attitudes lead t cllege children’s delayed independence
14. What is the best title fr the passage?
A. Technlgy r Attitude
B. Dependence r Independence
C. Family Influence r Scial Changes
D. Cllege Management r Cmmunicatin Advancement
15. Which f the fllwing shws the develpment f ideas in this passage?
I:Intrductin
