I glanced at the neighbring table, knwing we wuldn’t g unnticed much lnger. I quickly used Plan B: eat quickly and leave. Sam, wh nrmally inhales fd, suddenly embraced the cncept f leisurely dining and refused t rush — all while chattering away endlessly.
“SHUSH!” I said, a little annyed. Sam respnded by giggling ludly. “Be quiet!”
Nw the tw wmen were watching us. The lder f the tw wmen leaned ver. “Here it cmes!” I thught. She cmpletely surprised me when she said “Hney, stp shushing that by. He has smething imprtant t say. I have friends that talk way mre than he des, and they aren’t nearly as interesting.”

Heat waves are becming mre cmmn in parts f the United States — and that means mre peple running their air cnditiners fr lnger. But thse air cnditiners can make the prblem wrse, giving ff greenhuse gases as they wrk that cntribute heavily t climate change.
SkyCl Systems is trying t break that cycle, using technlgy that prmises t ffer buildings an alternative means t cl dwn in a similar way t hw the planet cls itself. “Our planet naturally cls itself by sending heat ut in the frm f infrared light (红外线) r radiatin,” said Eli Gldstein, SkyCl’s cfunder and CEO. “We d this thrugh rftp panels, which lk like slar panels but actually d the ppsite, reflecting 97% f the sunlight that hits them and cling the surface belw,” said Gldstein.
SkyCl’s mdel invlves fixing a netwrk f pipes belw thse panels. These pipes are filled with water, which is kept cl by the panels and then flws int an air cnditining system. This prcess is designed t take pressure ff the system’s cling mechanism. And because the panels cl naturally and dn’t need external pwer t functin, it helps the entire system use less electricity.
A Grcery Outlet stre in Califrnia, which has been using SkyCl’s system since last year, says it saw a marked drp in its electrical bills. Jesus Valenzuela, the stre manager, estimates that the panels have saved his stre rughly $3,000 a mnth.
But perhaps the biggest barrier t making the technlgy ubiquitus (无处不在的) is its relatively high cst. Increasing prductin culd help bring the cst dwn, Gldstein said, particularly fr develping cuntries in Asia and Africa where SkyCl hpes t eventually expand. Fr nw, the cmpany is fcused n cmmercial applicatins f the technlgy, thugh it hpes t start setting up panels n the rfs f individual hmes. “We’re just excited t be able t use this new technlgy fr gd,” Gldstein said.

C. By analyzing cause and effect.D. By describing the prcess in detail.
9. What is the functin f the pipes in SkyCl’s mdel?
A. T stre cld water t help cl the panels.
B. T help ease the water pressure f the air cnditining.
C. T pwer the panels by making use f flwing water.
D. T feed cld water int the air cnditining system.
10. Hw might Jesus Valenzuela view SkyCl’s system?
A. It’s pretty effective.B. It has increased sales fr his stre.
C. It will g ut f style quickly.D. It will cst t much t set up.
11. What des SkyCl expect f its system?
A. It’ll bring in a gd prfit fr the cmpany.B. It’ll gain ppularity in develped cuntries.
C. It’ll take the place f air cnditiners.D. It’ll be accessible t cmmn husehlds.

When ancient Egyptians put pen t paper — r, mre accurately, ink t papyrus (纸莎草纸) — they tk steps t ensure that their wrds wuld last frever, a new study suggests. Researchers frm the University f Cpenhagen have fund that ancient scribes (抄写员) likely added lead t their inks t help their writing dry. Mre than 1,000 years later, reprts Csms magazine, 15th-century Eurpean artists emplyed lead as well. Accrding t the Lndn Natinal Gallery, lead-based pigments (颜料) fund in many Old Master paintings are “knwn t aid the drying f paint films.”
Accrding t a statement frm the University f Cpenhagen, the study’s authrs analyzed 12 papyrus pieces dated t between 100 and 200 C.E., when Egypt was under Rman cntrl. The team used X-ray micrscpy t determine the raw materials used in different inks, as well as the chemical structure f the dried ink attached t the ancient paper. Ancient Egyptians began writing with ink — made by burning wd r il and mixing the resulting material with water — arund 3200 Typically, scribes used black, carbn-based ink fr the bdy f text and reserved red ink fr headings and ther key wrds in the text. Thugh black and red inks were mst cmmn, shades f blue, green, white and yellw als appeared in ancient texts.
The researchers write that the Egyptians created red inks with irn-based cmbinatins — mst likely natural earth pigments. The team als identified the presence f lead. They were bwled ver that there was n lead white r ther cmbinatins that wuld typically be present in a lead-based pigment. Instead, the ancient ink’s lead pigments appeared t wrap arund the papyrus cell walls and irn particles (微粒).The resulting effect lked “as if the letters were utlined” in lead. This find indicates that the ancient Egyptians invented a system f adding lead t red and black inks specifically fr the purpse f sticking the wrds t paper.
The 12 analyzed papyrus pieces are part f the University f Cpenhagen’s Papyrus Carlsberg Cllectin. The dcuments riginated in Tebtunis, the nly large-scale institutinal library knwn t have survived frm ancient Egyptian times.
12. What did ancient scribes and artists have in cmmn?
A. Bth preferred papyrus t thin paper.
B. Bth emplyed lead as white pigment.
C. Bth dried their wrks in the same way.
D. Bth liked cllecting Old Master paintings.
13. What can be learned abut ancient Egyptian inks?
A. They had a variety f clrs n ffer.
B. They appeared between 100 and 200 C.E.
C. They were mstly irn-based cmbinatins.
D. They were absrbed by water with difficulty.
14. What d the underlined wrds “bwled ver” in Paragraph 3 prbably mean?
A. Anxius.B. Surprised.C. Excited.D. Disappinted.
15. What is the text mainly abut?
A. The develpment f Egyptian writing habits.
B. Hw ink became ppular in ancient writing.
C. Why Eurpean scribes were addicted t lead.
D. The science behind ancient writing traditins.
