On May 28, 1953, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Nrgay, an experienced Sherpa (夏尔巴人), set ut and reached the Suth Summit by 9 a.m. next day. But after that, the ridge (山脊) slightly fell befre rising suddenly in a rcky spur (尖坡) abut 17 meters high just befre the true summit. The frmatin is difficult t climb due t its extreme pitch because a mistake wuld be deadly. Scratching at the snw with his ax, Hillary managed t vercme this enrmus bstacle, later t be knwn as the Hillary Step.
At 11: 30 a. m., the tw men fund themselves standing at the tp f the wrld. “Nt until we were abut 50 feet f the tp was I ever cmpletely cnvinced that we were actually ging t reach the summit.” Hillary later recunted, “Of curse I was very, very pleased t be n the summit, but my first thught was a little bit f surprise. After all, this is the ambitin f all muntaineers.”
Emerging as the first t summit Munt Everest, Hillary cntinued by helping explre Antarctica, and establishing the Himalayan Trust (信托基金), thrugh which he prvided a number f beneficial services t the Himalayan peples. Farming is destrying the planet, but there culd be a much mre envirnmentally friendly way t feed urselves: using renewable energy t turn carbn dixide int fd. “This is becming a reality,” says Pasi Vainikka at Slar Fds, a cmpany that is building the first cmmercial-scale factry that will be able t make fd directly frm CO2.
There can be n dubt that immediate attentin t find greener ways t grw fd is required. Cnventinal agriculture, including rganic farming, causes damage t the envirnment in many ways. It requires a lt f land, leading t habitat lss and defrestatin. It is als the surce f a third f all greenhuse gas emissins and releases ther pllutants. It isn't very efficient, either. Crps typically transfrm less than 1 percent f light energy int usable bimass (生物量).
Instead, Slar Fds plans t avid phtsynthesis (光合作用) altgether, and grw bacteria that use hydrgen as their surce f energy. At the factry, renewable electricity will be used t split water t prduce hydrgen and xygen. The hydrgen will be added t large cntainers, where the bacteria grw, alng with CO2 and ammnia (氨气). The end result will be a yellw pwder called Slein.
Slein is made f bacterial cells and is up t 70 percent prtein. It can be used as an ingredient in all kinds f fds. “We are aiming at replacing animal-surced prteins, which we think have the highest envirnmental impact,” says Vainikka.
Cmpared with plant crps, Slein will use 100 times less water per kilgram f prtein prduced, 20 times less land and emit a fifth as much CO2, accrding t Slar Fds. There are ther benefits, t: factries culd be situated anywhere in the wrld and prductin wn't be affected by weather cnditins.
“With Slar Fds and ther cmpanies scaling up their systems, this is truly beginning a new era f agriculture,” says Drian Leger at Cnnectmix Bi in Germany. “I think these trends are exciting and will help bend the carbn curve as well as lead t imprved glbal fd supply security.”
    28. What is the authr's purpse in mentining cnventinal agriculture in paragraph 2?
    A. T demnstrate its influence n crps. B. T cmpare different farming methds.

    A. it is prtein-richB. its prductin is weather sensitive
    C. it is resurce-efficientD. its prductin is lcatin-independent

    A. The use f Slein may help reduce carbn emissins.
    B. Slein will dminate the agricultural develpment.
    C. Slein can help achieve glbal fd safety.
    D. The prspect f Slein remains t be seen.

Many peple have participated int lts f virtual meetings these years. Sme research shws this adjustment might nt impact wrkplace prductivity t any great degree. A new study, thugh, suggests therwise.

Amng the grups, virtual pairs came up with significantly fewer ideas, suggesting that smething abut face-t-face interactin generates mre creative ideas. When randm bjects were placed in bth the virtual and physical rms, the virtual pairs f participants spent mre time lking directly at each ther rather than letting their lk wander abut the rm and taking in the entire scene. Eyeing ne's whle envirnment and nticing the randm bjects were assciated with increased idea generatin. On platfrms, the screen ccupies ur interactins. Our lk wavers less. “Lking away might cme acrss as rude,” said Brucks, “s we have t lk at the screen because that is the defined cntext f the interactin, the same way we wuldn't walk t anther rm while talking t smene in persn.”
Like mst educatrs, Brucks has primarily taught virtually in the past three years, and she did ntice sme benefits f the apprach as well. Her students were mre likely t take turns speaking and her shyer students spke up mre ften, rid f the anxiety that cmes frm addressing a large classrm. Brucks fund that ne slutin t imprving virtual idea generatin might be t simply turn ff the camera, fr her students felt “freer” and mre creative when asked t d s. And this may be sund advice fr the wrkplace.
    32. What des the underlined wrd “stiffen” in Paragraph 2 mst prbably mean?
    A. challenge. B. revise. C. strengthen. D. shake.
    33. At first, lead researcher Melanie Brucks might think that ____________.

    B. The feedback frm cmpanies seems questinable.
    C. Participants shuld make eye cntact in an nline meeting.
    D. Videcnferencing can't cmpare with in-persn cmmunicatin.
    34. What can we learn abut Brucks' students?
    A. They prgressed in fcusing attentin. B. They relieved anxiety by speaking up.
    C. They displayed talent fr public speaking.D. They tk advantage f virtual learning.
    35. Which f the fllwing wuld be the best title fr the passage?
    A. Brainstrming Online Limits CreativityB. Interacting In Persn Bsts Efficiency
    C. Gruping Randmly Increases PrductivityD. Maintaining Teamwrk Imprves Innvatin

    第一节 应用文
    Dear David,
Having reviewed yur initial draft fr the pster design cmpetitin n “Prtecting Wildlife”, I'm writing t ffer sme suggestins fr imprvement.
Yur design seems t lack a message that can mtivate peple t take actin. Additinally, the quality f the images and the cluttered layut need t be imprved.
Therefre, I suggest yu use a cncise and cnvincing message and high-quality images relevant t the theme. Meanwhile, yu'd better simplify the layut by remving sme unnecessary elements that distract attentin frm the message.
I hpe my feedback is helpful. Best f luck with yur design.
    第二节 读后续写
Suddenly I saw tw familiar figures walking twards me. “Lk wh's here!” my dad exclaimed with a smile, hlding Rsa with a baby basket. The yellw flwers in my hand seemed t glw even brighter as I gazed at the beautiful little girl. I culdn't help recalling what my aunt tld me. I knew that it wuld take time fr me t adjust t sharing my parents' attentin and my ld rm, but I was determined t be the best big sister I culd be. Then I carefully arranged the yellw flwers int a small buquet and handed it t my mm with a smile. “These are fr yu and Dad, and als fr Rsa,” I said, feeling a warmth in my chest that had been missing earlier.
Rsa was wide awake in her baby basket beside the picnic blanket. Her big blue eyes were pen, taking in the wrld arund her. As I watched my little sister, I culdn't help but feel a sense f wnder and amazement at hw perfect she was. I gently picked her up and held her clse, feeling her warmth and breathing in the sweet scent f her hair. I knew that frm nw n, my life wuld never be the same. I wuld n lnger be the center f attentin, and I wuld have t share my parents with this beautiful little creature. But as I lked int Rsa's eyes, I knew that it was all wrth it. She was my family, and I lved her mre than anything in the wrld.
