    Mark Rthk, ne f the greatest painters f the twentieth century, was brn in Daugavpils, Latvia in 1903. His father emigrated t the United States, afraid that his sns wuld be drafted int the Czarist army. Mark stayed in Russia with his mther and lder sister; they jined the family later, arriving in the winter f 1913, after a 12-day vyage.
    Mark mved t New Yrk in the autumn f 1923 and fund emplyment in the garment trade and tk up residence n the Upper West Side. It was while he was visiting smene at the Art Students League that he saw students sketching a nude mdel. Accrding t him, this was the start f his life as an artist. He was twenty years ld and had taken sme art lessns at schl, s his initial experience was far frm an immediate calling.
    In 1936, Mark Rthk began writing a bk, which he never cmpleted, abut the similarities in the children’s art and the wrk f mdern painters. The wrk f mdernists, which was influenced by primitive art, culd, accrding t him, be cmpared t that f children in that “child art transfrms itself int primitivism, which is nly the child prducing a mimicry f himself.” In this same wrk, he said that “the fact that ne usually begins with drawing is already academic. Fr critic Harld Rsenberg, the paintings were a revelatin.
