Recently I attended several meetings where we talked abut ways t retain students and keep yunger faculty members frm ging elsewhere.
It seems higher educatin has becme an industry f meeting-hlders whse task is t “slve” prblems-real r imagined. And in my psitin as a prfessr at three different clleges the actual prblems in educating ur yung peple and lder students have deepened, while the number f peple hired-nt t teach but t hld meetings-has increased significantly. Every new prblem creates a new jb fr an administrative fixer. Take ur Center fr Teaching Excellence. Cntrary t its title, the center is a clearing huse (信息交流中心) fr using technlgy in classrms and in nline curses. It’s an administrative sham (f the kind that has multiplied ver the last 30 years.
I ffer a simple prpsitin in respnse: Many f ur prblems-class attendance, educatinal success, student happiness and well-being-might be imprved by cutting dwn the bureaucratic mechanisms and meetings and instead hiring an army f gd teachers. If we replaced half f ur administrative staff with classrm teachers, we might actually get a majrity f ur classes back t 20 r fewer students per teacher. This wuld be an envirnment in which teachers and students actually knew each ther.
The teachers must be free t teach in their wn way-the curriculum shuld be flexible enugh s that they can use their individual talents t achieve the gals f the curse. Additinally, they shuld be allwed t teach, and be rewarded frding it well. Teachers are nt peple wh are great at and cnsumed by research and happen t appear in a classrm. Gd teaching and research are nt exclusive, but they are als nt autmatic cmpanins. Teaching is an art and a craft, talent and practice; it is nt smething that just anyne can be gd at. It is utterly cnfusing t me that peple d nt recgnize this, despite the fact that pretty much anyne wh has been a student can tell the difference between their best and wrst teachers.
4. What des the authr say abut present-day universities?
A. They are effectively tackling real r imagined prblems.
B. They ften fail t cmbine teaching with research.
C. They are ver-burdened with administrative staff.
D. They lack talent t fix their deepening prblems.
5. Accrding t the authr, what kind f peple d universities lack mst?
A. Gd classrm teachers.B. Efficient administratrs.
C. Talented researchers.D. Mtivated students.
6. What des the authr imply abut the classes at present?
A. They facilitate students’ independent learning.B. They help students frm clser relatinships.
C. They have mre lder students than befre.D. They are much bigger than is desirable.
7. What des the authr think f teaching ability?
A. It requires talent and practice.
B. It is clsely related t research.
C. It is a chief factr affecting students’ learning.
D. It can be acquired thrugh persistent practice.

Cars pwered by batteries made frm seawater and planes fueled by ammnia (氨) will becme cmmn ver the next 10 years, Bill David, a prfessr f materials chemistry has predicted.
Mst batteries fr electric cars and smartphnes are pwered by lithium (锂), which has t be mined, but David thinks that they will be vertaken by batteries made frm sdium (钠), which can be btained frm seawater and salt. The future f air travel culd als be greener thanks t bifuels.
David said: “We are develping an ammnia-based plane. In principle, we can imprve n an Airbus A320 r a Being 787 and essentially replace jet fuel with ammnia.”
David said that batteries culd, at first, cmbine sdium and lithium, as sdium was nt quite as pwerful as lithium but is much mre sufficient. “It’s nt quite perfect in terms f perfrmance, s we need bth,” David said.“Sdium is n the way up and mst electric cars have had a cmbinatin f lithium and sdium batteries in them. My estimate is that by 2040 I wuld nt be surprised if there were ten times mre sdium batteries than lithium nes, maybe even 100 times.”
The first generatin f mass-prduced sdium batteries has been used fr an electric car fr the first time. Sdium will nt be the final answer t ec-friendly air travel, hwever, which is why David’s team is lking int the use f ammnia. Sme cmpanies are lking int whether jet fuel can be replaced with hydrgen, but David sees ammnia as mre sustainable. He said: “If yu d the sums, then at 500mph yu get the same amunt f pwer as jet fuel, but just 40 per cent f the range. Hwever, even with the range hit, a 787 culd still g frm Lndn t New Yrk.”
Hwever, a reprt frm the Ryal Sciety n net-zer aviatin, which David c-wrte, says that replacing jet fuel with bifuel wuld require half f the agricultural land in the UK.
8. What is an advantage f sdium batteries?
A. Their perfrmance is easy t imprve.B. Their raw material is easily accessible.
C. They are widely applied t varius vehicles.D. They are mre pwerful than ther batteries.
9. Accrding t David, which is ideal fr future electric cars?
A. Lithium battery.B. Sdium battery.C. Hydrgen fuel.D. Ammnia fuel.
10. What is paragraph 5 mainly abut?
A. Hydrgen casts a light n jet fuel market.
B. Electric car makers favr sdium batteries.
C. Ammnia features sustainability and practicability.
D. Cmpanies have mass-prduced recycled batteries.
11. What’s David’s attitude t replacing jet fuel with bifuel?
A. Tlerant.B. Unclear.C. Cautius.D. Dubtful.

The secret t eating less and being happy abut it may have been cracked years ag-by McDnald’s. Accrding t anew study frm Cmnell University’s Fd and Brand Lab, small nn-fd rewards-like the tys in McDnald’s Happy Meals-stimulate the same reward centers in the brain as fd des.
The researchers, led by Martin Reimann, carried ut a series f experiments t see if peple wuld chse a smaller meal if it was paired with a nn-fd item.
They fund that the majrity f bth kids and adults pted fr a half-sized prtin when cmbined with a prize. Bth ptins were priced the same.
Even mre interesting is that the prmise f a future reward was enugh t make adults chse the smaller prtin. One f the prizes used was a lttery ticket, with a S10, $50 r $100 payut, and this was as effective as a tangible gift in persuading peple t eat less.
“The fact that participants were willing t substitute part f a fd item fr the mere prspect f a relatively small mnetary award is interesting,” says Reimann.
He therizes that it is the emtinal cmpnent f these intangible prizes that make them effective. In fact, vaguely-stated pssibilities f winning a prize were mre effective than ptins with hard dds included.
“One explanatin fr this finding is that pssible awards may be mre emtinally prvking than certainty awards,” says Reimann. “The uncertainty f winning prvides added attractin and desirability thrugh emtinal ‘thrills.’ The pssibility f receiving an award als prduces a state f hpe-a state that is in itself psychlgically rewarding. “In ther wrds, there’s a reasn why peple like t gamble.
Hw might this knwledge be used t help peple eat mre healthily?
One pssibility is a healthy ptin that ffers the chance t win a spa weekend. Or maybe the reward f a half-sized prtin culd be a half-sized dessert t be claimed nly n a future date. That wuld get yu back in the restaurant and make yu eat a little less.
12. What d we learn abut McDnald’s inclusin f tys in its Happy Meals?
A. It may shed light n peple’s desire t crack a secret.
B. It has prved t be key t McDnald’s business success.
C. It appeals t kid’s curisity t find ut what is hidden inside.
D. It may be a pleasant way fr kids t reduce their fd intake.
13. What is the finding f the researchers led by Martin Reimann?
A. Reducing fd intake is nt that difficult if peple g t McDnald’s mre.
B. Mst kids and adult s dn’t actually feel hungry when they cat half f their meal.
C. Eating a smaller prtin f fd des gd t the health f kids and adults alike.
D. Mst kids and adults wuld chse a smaller meal that came with a nn-fd item.
14. What is mst interesting in Martin Reimann’s finding?
A. Kids preferred an award in the frm f mney t ne in the frm f a ty.
B. Adults chse the smaller prtin n the mere prmise f a future award.
C. Bth kids and adults felt satisfied with nly half f their meal prtins.
D. Neither children nr adults culd resist the temptatin f a free ty.
15. What can we infer frm Martin Reimann’s finding?
A. Peple shuld eat much less if they wish t stay healthy and happy.
B. Mre fast fd restaurants are likely t fllw McDnald’s example.
C. We can lead peple t eat less while helping the restaurant business.
D. Mre studies are needed t find ut the impact f emtin n behavir.
