The study used infrmatin cllected frm mre than 28, 000 seventh-grade Canadian students between 2014 and 2018. The students first answered questins abut their usage f screen time after schl, including hw much time they spent watching TV, Netflix r smething else. Then, students reprted hw many days they had taken part in after-schl activities such as sprts r arts prgrammes. After that, researchers asked students t describe their state f mind. Fr example, when given a statement such as “I start mst days thinking that I will have a gd day”, they culd chse t what level they agreed with it n a scale (等级).
Sme f the results were expected, researchers said in the study. Students with n after-schl activities usually had high levels f screen time, fr example. And they expected girls wuld scre higher n negative indicatrs (消极指标) f mental health, as earlier research had fund that they tended t have higher levels f anxiety (焦虑) cmpared t bys.
What was ntewrthy, researchers say, is that even amng students wh tk part in after-schl activities, 46% still went beynd the recmmended screen time f tw hurs. At the same time, 67% f students wh didn’t take part in after-schl activities als had mre than tw hurs f screen time. Tgether, this suggests high screen time amng teenagers generally.
“The findings suggest that after-schl activities are valuable fr the happy grwing f teenagers,” the study said. “While past studies have prved the imprtance f after-schl activities fr scial and academic (学业的) develpment, the present study shws their imprtance fr gd mental health results.”

Fr the study, the researchers fund 2,635 adults wh agreed t receive texts at any time during the day. The texts began with a happiness questin, which asked the participants (参与者) t rate hw they felt “right nw” n a scale frm very bad t very gd. Half f them were then asked if they had made a material purchase within the past hur, such as clthing r electrnic gds. The thers were asked if they had made an experiential purchase within the past hur, such as eating in a restaurant r attending a cncert.
The researchers fund that the purchasers f the experiences express higher levels f happiness than the purchasers f the material gds, n matter hw much the purchases cst.
T address pssible differences in types f purchasers, the researchers made a secnd study in which they researched mre than 5,000 adults. “We still bserved the same result,” said Amit Kumar, the study’s lead authr.
The researchers said a pssible explanatin is the endurance (持久) f experiences in peple’s memries, while the bserved value f material gds weakens ver time.
“If yu want t be happier, it might be wise t mve sme f yur spending away frm material gds and a bit mre tward experiences,” Kumar said. “That wuld likely lead t greater happiness.”
