A new study written by Keltn Minr shws that by the end f this century, peple culd suffer frm at least tw weeks f shrt sleep each year because f high temperatures driven by glbal warming.
“The sleep lss per degree f warming was twice as large amng the elderly cmpared t yunger r middle-aged adults, three times larger fr peple living in lwer-incme cuntries cmpared t high-incme cuntries, and significantly larger fr females than males,” Minr said.
“Imprtantly, we fund sme evidence that the temperature-sensitivity f sleep in late adulthd may increase between the ages f 60 and 70, with the magnitude (程度) f sleep lss per degree f warming increasing further fr thse lder than 70,” Minr added.
Minr said these findings are based n data (数据) frm a first-f-its-kind “planet natural experiment” in which mre than 47,600 peple frm 68 cuntries wre sleep-tracking watches frm September 2015 thrugh Octber 2017. Minr and his partners then cmpared the 7.4 millin sleep recrds they’d gathered against lcal weather and climate data, t see hw heat influenced their sleep.
Data shw that n very warm nights—30℃ r higher—sleep reduced an average f just ver 14 minutes, and the chance f getting fewer than seven hurs f sleep increased as temperatures rise.
Generally, peple slept later and wake up earlier during ht weather, researchers said.
